Book Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8

Download or read book Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-07-23 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children are already learning at birth, and they develop and learn at a rapid pace in their early years. This provides a critical foundation for lifelong progress, and the adults who provide for the care and the education of young children bear a great responsibility for their health, development, and learning. Despite the fact that they share the same objective - to nurture young children and secure their future success - the various practitioners who contribute to the care and the education of children from birth through age 8 are not acknowledged as a workforce unified by the common knowledge and competencies needed to do their jobs well. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 explores the science of child development, particularly looking at implications for the professionals who work with children. This report examines the current capacities and practices of the workforce, the settings in which they work, the policies and infrastructure that set qualifications and provide professional learning, and the government agencies and other funders who support and oversee these systems. This book then makes recommendations to improve the quality of professional practice and the practice environment for care and education professionals. These detailed recommendations create a blueprint for action that builds on a unifying foundation of child development and early learning, shared knowledge and competencies for care and education professionals, and principles for effective professional learning. Young children thrive and learn best when they have secure, positive relationships with adults who are knowledgeable about how to support their development and learning and are responsive to their individual progress. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 offers guidance on system changes to improve the quality of professional practice, specific actions to improve professional learning systems and workforce development, and research to continue to build the knowledge base in ways that will directly advance and inform future actions. The recommendations of this book provide an opportunity to improve the quality of the care and the education that children receive, and ultimately improve outcomes for children.

Book From Neurons to Neighborhoods

Download or read book From Neurons to Neighborhoods written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-11-13 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How we raise young children is one of today's most highly personalized and sharply politicized issues, in part because each of us can claim some level of "expertise." The debate has intensified as discoveries about our development-in the womb and in the first months and years-have reached the popular media. How can we use our burgeoning knowledge to assure the well-being of all young children, for their own sake as well as for the sake of our nation? Drawing from new findings, this book presents important conclusions about nature-versus-nurture, the impact of being born into a working family, the effect of politics on programs for children, the costs and benefits of intervention, and other issues. The committee issues a series of challenges to decision makers regarding the quality of child care, issues of racial and ethnic diversity, the integration of children's cognitive and emotional development, and more. Authoritative yet accessible, From Neurons to Neighborhoods presents the evidence about "brain wiring" and how kids learn to speak, think, and regulate their behavior. It examines the effect of the climate-family, child care, community-within which the child grows.

Book Collaborative Therapy and Neurobiology

Download or read book Collaborative Therapy and Neurobiology written by Marie-Nathalie Beaudoin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-16 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collaborative Therapy and Neurobiology is the book many clinicians have been waiting for: an integration of twenty years of scientific and therapeutic cutting-edge ideas into concrete clinical practices. Interpersonal neurobiology and the development of exciting new technologies that allow us to better understand the brain have provided us with an enriched perspective on human experience. Yet, many clinicians wonder how to use this knowledge, and how these discoveries can actually benefit their clients. In particular, what are the concrete practices that each field uses to help clients overcome the issues in their lives, and how can these fields build on each other’s ideas? Could minimally developed concepts in each field be combined into innovative and powerful practices to foster client wellbeing? This book offers a collection of writings which provide theoretical food for thought, research evidence, and most importantly hands-on, concrete clinical ideas to enrich therapists’ work with a variety of clients. Illustrated with numerous transcripts of conversations and clinical stories, the ideas in this book will stimulate the work of people interested in renewing their practice with new ideas.

Book The Effects of Early Social Emotional and Relationship Experience on the Development of Young Orphanage Children

Download or read book The Effects of Early Social Emotional and Relationship Experience on the Development of Young Orphanage Children written by The St. Petersburg-USA Orphanage Research Team and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-04-27 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Undertaken at orphanages in Russia, this study tests the role of early social and emotion experience in the development of children. Children were exposed to either multiple caregivers who performed routine duties in a perfunctory manner with minimal interaction or fewer caregivers who were trained to engage in warm, responsive, and developmentally appropriate interactions during routine care. Engaged and responsive caregivers were associated with substantial improvements in child development and these findings provide a rationale for making similar improvements in other institutions, programs, and organizations.

Book Reset Your Child s Brain

Download or read book Reset Your Child s Brain written by Victoria L. Dunckley, MD and published by New World Library. This book was released on 2015-06-23 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasing numbers of parents grapple with children who are acting out without obvious reason. Revved up and irritable, many of these children are diagnosed with ADHD, bipolar illness, autism, or other disorders but don’t respond well to treatment. They are then medicated, often with poor results and unwanted side effects. Based on emerging scientific research and extensive clinical experience, integrative child psychiatrist Dr. Victoria Dunckley has pioneered a four-week program to treat the frequent underlying cause, Electronic Screen Syndrome (ESS). Dr. Dunckley has found that everyday use of interactive screen devices — such as computers, video games, smartphones, and tablets — can easily overstimulate a child’s nervous system, triggering a variety of stubborn symptoms. In contrast, she’s discovered that a strict, extended electronic fast single-handedly improves mood, focus, sleep, and behavior, regardless of the child’s diagnosis. It also reduces the need for medication and renders other treatments more effective. Offered now in this book, this simple intervention can produce a life-changing shift in brain function and help your child get back on track — all without cost or medication. While no one in today’s connected world can completely shun electronic stimuli, Dr. Dunckley provides hope for parents who feel that their child has been misdiagnosed or inappropriately medicated, by presenting an alternative explanation for their child’s difficulties and a concrete plan for treating them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can we teach children to control their anger and calm themselves in situations of frustration? How can children learn to resolve disputes in a constructive way? Tommy Turtle's Brainpower method is a captivating 2-chapter story that promotes children's social and emotional competence. It begins when Tommy, a playful and endearing turtle is frustrated and "Hot Anger takes control of his head." Once Tommy blows up, his friends are upset and turn away from him. Ms. Giraffe, the pre-school teacher, steps in to calm the situation and to set limits. She kindly offers to teach Tommy a 3-step way for working out problems. As Tommy follows Ms. Giraffe' clear and simple instructions, he applies the three universal steps that help children (and adults) to improve self-regulation and problem solving skills: stop, cool down, and finally think and act responsibly. In the second chapter, Tommy learns how to make up with friends following the loss of self-control. He bravely faces the fear of being shamed, asks for forgiveness and makes amends. This book includes playing cards that facilitate conversation with children about forgiveness and making-up. There are also guidelines designed for parents, teachers, and therapists for applying "the Brainpower Method." The guidelines were derived from Hitkashrut: a research-based early-intervention program that successfully reduced young children's' behavior problems and enhanced their self-regulation and social skills. The book concludes with a poster that presents the 3-step way.

Providing enrichment activities that support healthy forms of self-regulation and reflection and prosocial dispositions could ameliorate or even prevent some of the mental health and school-linked problems that often arise as they transition to puberty (Best & Miller, 2010; M.C. Davidson; Anderson & Diamond, 2006).*This curriculum was developed by Dr. Amita Roy Shah based on her education and expertise. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first book in Social Thinking and Me, Kids' Guidebook for Social Emotional Learning, kids are introduced to Social Thinking Vocabulary and concepts that help them figure out what’s “expected” in different social contexts. Additionally, strategies are taught to give kids the tools needed to solve social problems. Concepts are explained using age-relevant social situations, cool illustrated pictures, and lots of group discussions that can aid each student on their journey to becoming a better social thinker. At the end of each chapter in book 1, expand and personalize the lesson by using the related thinksheets found in book 2! Chapters cover essential Social Thinking concepts including: · What is Social Thinking · Social Thinking = Flexible Thinking · We All Have Feelings · Thinking With Your Eyes · Thinking About the Hidden Rules and Expected Behavior · Keeping my Body, Eyes, Ears, and Brain in the Group · Thinking of Others vs Just Me · How Big is My Problem? · Thinking About My Reaction Size · Doing an Activity or Just Hanging Out
