Volumes are organized into broad subject areas such as Humanities, Languages and Literature, History, Social Sciences and Professional Studies, Science and Technology, and Interdisciplinary and Area Studies. The seventh volume provides helpful cross-referencing indexes which explain the relationship between RCL subject taxonomy and LC ranges. Non-book selections will be easily identified by a graphic indicator included in the item record. All selections will be assigned an audience level marker indicating whether the title is most appropriate for lower-division undergraduate, upper-division undergraduate, faculty, or general readership. Book Academic Library Services for First Generation Students

Download or read book Academic Library Services for First Generation Students written by Xan Arch and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2020-07-16 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting strategies for improving academic library services for first-generation students, this timely book focuses on programs and services that will increase student academic engagement and success. Demographic data and secondary school graduation rates suggest that colleges and universities will enroll growing numbers of first-generation students over the next decade. Academic Library Services for First-Generation Students focuses on ways academic libraries can uniquely contribute to the successful transition to college and year-to-year retention of first-generation students. The practical recommendations in this book include a wide range of ideas for the design and modification of library services and facilities to be more inclusive of the needs of first-generation students. All of the recommendations are specifically aimed at addressing challenges faced by first-generation students. Topics covered range from study spaces and service points to information literacy instruction and campus partnerships. The book makes the case—both explicitly and implicitly—that academic libraries can help address known risk factors (e.g., by helping students build academic cultural competencies) and thereby improve success, persistence, and retention for first-generation students. Academic library professionals in both leadership roles and public service positions will benefit from the actionable strategies presented here.

Book Index to the Subject Catalogue of Harvard College Library Classic Reprint

Download or read book Index to the Subject Catalogue of Harvard College Library Classic Reprint written by Harvard University Library and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-15 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Index to the Subject Catalogue of Harvard College Library The Subject Catalogue of Harvard College Library may be described as an alphabetical-classed catalogue. As in other classed or systematic catalogues, special subjects are grouped under general heads, but, as in a dictionary catalogue, these general heads are arranged in alphabetical, not systematic order, while the special topics and other subdivisions of these general classes also follow the order of the alphabet. The main headings, about 500 in number and distinguished in the following Index by heavy faced type and in reference by small capitals, are by no means of equal extent or importance in the ground they cover. Some, such as ambergris, automata, coffee-houses, and copying have less than a dozen cards and no subdivisions, while others like agriculture, antiquities, history, or music occupy many drawers of the catalogue and include a large number of subdivisions. The subdivisions or special topics, as has been said, fall in alphabetical order, but it should be noticed that they are frs quently grouped in several different alphabets in order to bring topics of the same character side by side. (see the examples given below.) It is to these subordinate headings in particular that the Index is intended to furnish a clew. To facilitate reference a number has been assigned to each main heading, while each sub-heading (or, in some cases, each alphabetical group of sub-headings) has its special number which follows the number of the main heading in the form of a decimal. These numbers are placed on the outside of the catalogue drawers and on the guide-blocks in the drawers and by means of them reference is made in the Index from each topic to the place or places in the catalogue where it occurs. In order to make clearer the general plan of the catalogue and the use Of these numbers, the various subdivisions of two classes, agriculture and painting, are set forth in order on the next page. A similar conspectus of all the headings and their subdivisions will perhaps be printed at some future time.
