Download or read book Book Keeping and Accountantship Elementary and Practical Vol 1 of 2 written by Thomas Jones and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Book-Keeping and Accountantship, Elementary and Practical, Vol. 1 of 2 The design of the present work is to teach, by the shortest possible process, such parts of the subject of Book-keeping and Accountantship as are difficult to be mastered without a regular course of study, as Grammar, Arithmetic, or any other science. Great care has been taken to avoid wasting the pupil's energies on mere matters of detail, which require no teaching; every part of the process involves something important for the man of business to know, and which it would be almost impossible to acquire without previous study. It is generally conceded that the best school-book is the one which presents the exercises of the student according to the most logical arrangement of its elementary principles. When the first exercise prepares the learner to understand the second, and the first and second are required to understand the third, and so on, until the subject is exhausted, teaching can go no further - the rest is the legitimate work of the student. There are, in fact, two very distinct methods of treating a subject: the one by taking a certain amount of detail, and explaining it by reference to such principles as may happen to be involved; the other, by analysing the whole subject, and giving such detail as is necessary to illustrate and enforce every principle. In the one case, principles are given to meet only part of the detail; in the other, the detail is selected to enforce all the principles. The superiority of the latter method need not be insisted upon, - the experienced teacher will recognise it as the great feature of those improvements which distinguish our school-books from those of the last century. The value of an exercise is not to be estimated by the probability of the question arising in exactly the same form in practice, but in proportion as it serves to render familiar some principle of general value that applies as well to a thousand cases. We thus educate the intellect instead of encumbering the mind with useless lumber of detail, which is too often mistaken for knowledge. The course of instruction here laid down is in all its main features the same as appears in "The Principles and Practice of Book-keeping," a former work of the author. Those who have watched the progress of other school-books will not be surprised at the alterations experience has suggested. A change so radical could scarcely be expected to be carried out at once in all its details - the very assumption of such self-sufficiency on the part of an author ought to destroy his claim to confidence. Sheaffer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Metropolitan System of Bookkeeping, Embracing Theory and Practice of Bookkeeping and Accounting for High Schools, Parochial Schools, Academies and All Other Schools Teaching the Subject In preparing this text on bookkeeping, the author has had the gradual, progressive development of the subject in mind. A reaction is taking place in the teaching of bookkeeping in the best schools. There is no good reason why the teaching of bookkeeping, especially in the beginning course, should differ so much from the teaching of other subjects. In other subjects, we do not attempt to teach the pupil at once all the operations necessary to give him a complete understanding of the subject. We teach him an operation or step at a time. The author believes that teachers and pupils alike will welcome a text in bookkeeping that takes up one operation at a time, or a new subject, and explains it before undertaking another. Each subject is well illustrated and sufficient exercises are given to enable the pupil to learn one step before studying the next. The development and illustration of a new subject in practically every chapter is a feature that should appeal to every teacher of the subject. The expression, "learn by doing," has come to mean little more than routine, mechanical work without much thought. Skill in the mechanical work must be developed by a sufficient number of exercises and sets, but that is simply one side of the study of bookkeeping. The author believes that if bookkeeping is to maintain its place as a study in the secondary school curriculum on a par with other subjects, the thought side must be emphasized. It must not be simply an incidental matter. Bookkeeping, as a study, should not depend on its practical value alone for its standing. To develop the thought side of bookkeeping, frequent class recitations are necessary. The arrangement of the text is especially adapted for this purpose. In beginning with the study of cash, the author believes he is beginning with a subject in which the pupil is naturally interested. Book Progressive Business Accounting

Download or read book Progressive Business Accounting written by Lloyd E. Goodyear and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Progressive Business Accounting: An Elementary Course in Bookkeeping Business Practice, Forms and Usages for Commercial Schools and Individual Reference In our judgment, the call for new work in elementary bookkeeping refers to a course arranged in direct illustrative lines. Bookkeeping is an application of arithmetic. It would be useless to attempt to discover anything in the principles of single or double entry bookkeeping that is not well established. It would be equally useless to carry a student through the forms of such discovery. The land-marks of accounting have been definitely placed, the principles have been clearly defined. It is the part of a course of this nature to so arrange the facts that in a progressive order each may follow as a result of that which has preceded. This course consists of twenty-five graded exercises beginning with the ledger form, from that passing to its use, from that to the rules governing its use, and to the other forms contributing to it. The trial balance, statement. and ledger closed are the natural and necessary sequences of the line of demonstration commenced. The subject matter of these exercises has always been chosen with reference to the previous experiences of those taking the course. Following exercises ten. fifteen and twenty are business practice sets A, B and C. These subject the knowledge acquired in the exercises to a fair business test. The introduction of transactions and forms, outgoing and incoming, used in A. B and C, gives to the accounting principles and facts learned a business setting. It is claimed for results in the course as here arranged that the student has a more definite knowledge of what to do. and a clearer perception of completion when his task is finished, than in other similar courses now in use. Likewise, the teacher has the maximum control of the students' work with the minimum effort on his part. The slow student cannot seem to be rapid, nor can the progress of the rapid student he covered if the work is taken as outlined, and the accompanying automatic check is used. This is a consideration of importance where one teacher has charge of a large department. A teacher does not want to do any work that a prepared system can do. He wants to teach, not tinker. The established principles and bookkeeping rules are arranged in numbered information topics, to which reference is constantly made. The forms are reproductions of the work of a practical writer and accountant who never hesitated to allow his work to undergo the test of the first-class business office in first-class competition. The variety of forms will be found extensive. Exercises I. to X., inclusive, provide a four weeks' course for those who do not intend to pursue the subject further. It will take the average commercial worker six months' time to complete the entire course. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
