Book Understanding the Book of Mormon

Download or read book Understanding the Book of Mormon written by Grant Hardy and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-04-07 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mark Twain once derided the Book of Mormon as "chloroform in print." Long and complicated, written in the language of the King James version of the Bible, it boggles the minds of many. Yet it is unquestionably one of the most influential books ever written. With over 140 million copies in print, it is a central text of one of the largest and fastest-growing faiths in the world. And, Grant Hardy shows, it's far from the coma-inducing doorstop caricatured by Twain. In Understanding the Book of Mormon, Hardy offers the first comprehensive analysis of the work's narrative structure in its 180 year history. Unlike virtually all other recent world scriptures, the Book of Mormon presents itself as an integrated narrative rather than a series of doctrinal expositions, moral injunctions, or devotional hymns. Hardy takes readers through its characters, events, and ideas, as he explores the story and its messages. He identifies the book's literary techniques, such as characterization, embedded documents, allusions, and parallel narratives. Whether Joseph Smith is regarded as author or translator, it's noteworthy that he never speaks in his own voice; rather, he mediates nearly everything through the narrators Nephi, Mormon, and Moroni. Hardy shows how each has a distinctive voice, and all are woven into an integral whole. As with any scripture, the contending views of the Book of Mormon can seem irreconcilable. For believers, it is an actual historical document, transmitted from ancient America. For nonbelievers, it is the work of a nineteenth-century farmer from upstate New York. Hardy transcends this intractable conflict by offering a literary approach, one appropriate to both history and fiction. Regardless of whether readers are interested in American history, literature, comparative religion, or even salvation, he writes, the book can best be read if we examine the text on its own terms.

Yet few people have more than a passing knowledge of the document that defines and drives this important movement—the Book of Mormon. A former Mormon and an adult convert to Christianity, author Ross Anderson provides a clear summary of the Book of Mormon including its history, teachings, and unique features. Book This Is My Doctrine The Development of Mormon Theology

Download or read book This Is My Doctrine The Development of Mormon Theology written by Charles R. Harrell and published by Greg Kofford Books. This book was released on 2011-08-05 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The principal doctrines defining Mormonism today often bear little resemblance to those it started out with in the early 1830s. This book shows that these doctrines did not originate in a vacuum but were rather prompted and informed by the religious culture from which Mormonism arose. Early Mormons, like their early Christian and even earlier Israelite predecessors, brought with them their own varied culturally conditioned theological presuppositions (a process of convergence) and only later acquired a more distinctive theological outlook (a process of differentiation). In this first-of-its-kind comprehensive treatment of the development of Mormon theology, Charles Harrell traces the history of Latter-day Saint doctrines from the times of the Old Testament to the present. He describes how Mormonism has carried on the tradition of the biblical authors, early Christians, and later Protestants in reinterpreting scripture to accommodate new theological ideas while attempting to uphold the integrity and authority of the scriptures. In the process, he probes three questions: How did Mormon doctrines develop? What are the scriptural underpinnings of these doctrines? And what do critical scholars make of these same scriptures? In this enlightening study, Harrell systematically peels back the doctrinal accretions of time to provide a fresh new look at Mormon theology. “This Is My Doctrine” will provide those already versed in Mormonism’s theological tradition with a new and richer perspective of Mormon theology. Those unacquainted with Mormonism will gain an appreciation for how Mormon theology fits into the larger Jewish and Christian theological traditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an unabridged edition of the holy text of Mormonism, as transcribed by the founder of the Mormon church - Joseph Smith. Divided into specific books in much the same manner as the Holy Bible, the Book of Mormon is believed by followers of The Church of Latter-Day Saints to contain the writings of various prophets who resided in North America. This collection of texts is also known by its full name: The Book of Mormon: An Account Written by the Hand of Mormon upon Plates Taken from the Plates of Nephi. Joseph Smith claimed to receive religious guidance from an angel of God named Moroni, who first appeared to him when he was aged seventeen. Announcing that a variety of writings upon plates of dazzling gold were present - buried on a hilltop in rural New York state. It was with Moroni's divine instruction that Smith said he made the discovery. The Book of Mormon begins with two sets of witness testimonies - people who claimed to have seen and, in some instances, felt the gold tablets excavated by Joseph Smith. After the testimonies, the individual books which comprise the compilation of the Book of Mormon begin with the Books of Nephi. The final book is by Moroni, the same angel who introduced Smith to the buried plates. Given its length of some 291,000 words, the effort to transcribe the texts to English for printing took several years. The first accounts are said to have taken place in Jerusalem circa 600 BC, while later texts claim the arrival of various observant families to America from the Middle East. The texts delve into and discuss deeply the various theological and philosophical principles of Mormonism, establishing a lengthy canon which the Church of Latter-Day Saints holds as important and holy to this day. This edition of the Mormon scriptures is published in an attractive, tri-columned format for ease of comprehension and reading. The chapters and passages receive their original numbering, and a table of contents present at the beginning of the edition allows for ease of navigation and ready reference of specific areas of the text.
