Download or read book Avar Age Polearms and Edged Weapons written by Gergely Csiky and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-09-17 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Avar-Age Polearms and Edged Weapons, Gergely Csiky offers a presentation of close combat weapons of a nomadic population that migrated from Inner Asia to East-Central Europe. During the late 6th – early 7th centuries, the Avars led successful military campaigns against the Balkan realms of the Byzantine Empire, facilitated by their cavalry’s use of stirrups for the first time in Europe. Besides the classification, manufacturing techniques, fittings, suspension, distribution, and chronology of polearms and edged weapons known from Avar-age burials, a special emphasis is laid on the origins and cultural contacts of these weapons, among them the first edged weapons with curved blades: the sabres. The social significance and, function of these artefacts is discussed in order to place them in nomadic warfare.
Download or read book Knives written by James Marchington and published by Potomac Books. This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the outdoorsman or soldier, a knife is not a luxury, it is a necessity. One of man's most basic tools, a knife can gather and prepare food, build and tend a fire, create a shelter and signal for rescue; and when the chips are down, it will do duty as a lethal close combat weapon. Knives: Military Edged Tools & Weapons covers the whole range of blades available to the modern soldier, from fighting knives and bayonets, through combat and survival knives, to the versatile multi-tools and folders, not forgetting special purpose blades such as the machete, special forces shovel, combat tomahawk and even the assegai. It is often erroneously thought that these knives are designed solely for killing; this book seeks to show that they are in fact truly multi-purpose tools.

Book excerpt: Honest businessman or con-artist? Loyal friend or "selective sociopath"? This was Jim Atwood, a colorful Savannah native who, like a Rembrandt chiaroscuro painting, was a study in light and dark, moving from bon vivant to Bad Boy effortlessly. In a fascinating narrative, the author tells of a lovable rogue who barely avoided a military stockade yet still become a Lieutenant Colonel in a high-profile Army intelligence post. A man who prospered working alongside rogue CIA agents, generals, criminals, and at least one agent from the "other side." He could enthrall Senators or laborers and dazzle the ladies while at the same time being a man's man. Everyone who thought they knew him rarely saw the complete Jim. It remained for a few confidants to assemble the scattered pieces of the puzzle this James Bond-like man left behind at his demise.
