Book excerpt: Is Scripture really our ultimate authority? Most Christians answer this question by simply saying, "The Bible is my final authority." But, as we explain here, such a view forgets that there is a human being between us and the Bible, which is why there are a multitude of interpretations of the Bible that people live by. Reformed theologians in particularly have claimed that a "testimony of the Spirit," or some sort of an additional revelation of the Spirit, confirms to us what is true. But, again, we can demonstrate that there is no biblical or practical support for this. Accordingly, we are back to our God-given reason and the right and responsibility of private judgment as our ultimate subjective authority by which we live by. Postmoderns are right, then, to assert that our own reason is the god we live by. But they are wrong to ignore that our ultimate objective authority is God, Who our reasoning will be judged by.

Book excerpt: What is God's purpose for human reason? About 2000 years ago, the crucifier of the truth, asked Jesus, "What is truth"? (John 18:38). Such questions are fundamental to human life and make up the field of epistemology. It reminds us that there is a human being between us and God. Epistemology has been a hot topic in Christian theology because of how our postmodern culture has questioned the very foundations of knowledge and truth. It is also an important part of a systematic theology as it is helpful to understand how we know what is true, before deciding what is true. This is why Calvin began his Institutes discussing the knowledge of our self, before the knowledge of God. Thomas Oden has said, "No study of God is complete without dealing with the limits and resources of human reasoning in God's presence." While many modern Christian philosophers are neglecting the God-given place of human reason in the process of divine revelation, we defend it here, and offer several critiques of popular views.

Book Work and Authority in Industry

Download or read book Work and Authority in Industry written by Richard Bendix and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-24 with total page 808 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Work and Authority in Industry analyzes how the entrepreneurial class responded to the challenge of creating, and later managing, an industrial work force in widely differing types of industrial societies: the United States, England, and Russia. Bendix's penetrating re-examination of an aspect of economic history largely taken for granted was first published in 1965. It has become a classic. His central notion, that the behavior of the capitalist class may be more important than the behavior of the working class in determining the course of events, is now widely accepted. The book explores industrialization, management, and ideological appeals; entrepreneurial ideologies in England's early phase of industrialization; entrepreneurial ideologies in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Russia; the bureaucratization of economic enterprises; and the American experience with -industrialization. This essential text will interest those in the fields of political science, industrial relations, management studies, as well as comparative sociologists and historians.

  • Publisher : Crown Currency
  • Release : 2010-02-16
  • ISBN : 030759016X
  • Pages : 322 pages

Download or read book Switch written by Chip Heath and published by Crown Currency. This book was released on 2010-02-16 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is it so hard to make lasting changes in our companies, in our communities, and in our own lives? The primary obstacle is a conflict that's built into our brains, say Chip and Dan Heath, authors of the critically acclaimed bestseller Made to Stick. Psychologists have discovered that our minds are ruled by two different systems - the rational mind and the emotional mind—that compete for control. The rational mind wants a great beach body; the emotional mind wants that Oreo cookie. The rational mind wants to change something at work; the emotional mind loves the comfort of the existing routine. This tension can doom a change effort - but if it is overcome, change can come quickly. In Switch, the Heaths show how everyday people - employees and managers, parents and nurses - have united both minds and, as a result, achieved dramatic results: • The lowly medical interns who managed to defeat an entrenched, decades-old medical practice that was endangering patients • The home-organizing guru who developed a simple technique for overcoming the dread of housekeeping • The manager who transformed a lackadaisical customer-support team into service zealots by removing a standard tool of customer service In a compelling, story-driven narrative, the Heaths bring together decades of counterintuitive research in psychology, sociology, and other fields to shed new light on how we can effect transformative change. Switch shows that successful changes follow a pattern, a pattern you can use to make the changes that matter to you, whether your interest is in changing the world or changing your waistline.

Download or read book Horns in High C written by Howard Chandler Robbins Landon and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 1999 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now universally known as one of the world’s leading authorities on music in Europe in the 18th and early 19th centuries, H.C. Robbins Landon decided on his choice of career while still a schoolboy in the 1940s. His goal of rediscovering the music of Joseph Haydn and bringing it to a broad cross-section of music-lovers and scholars has been admirably achieved in definitive editions of scores, ground-breaking recordings and broadcasts, as well as in his magisterial writings, especially on the life and works of Haydn and Mozart - all done with great bravura. In these recollections of his upbringing and student years in the United States, followed by military service in the U.S. Army and an adventurous career based largely in Europe, the author gives a fascinating account of his single-minded quest. Graphic descriptions of important discoveries made in obscure archives in Austria and Eastern Europe, often accompanied by accounts of hair-raising experiences dealing with the authorities in Communist countries in the 1950s and 1960s, are interspersed with many revealing anecdotes concerning leading figures in music over fifty years, including Herbert von Karajan and Walter Legge, George Szell, Hans Keller, Leonard Bernstein and Sir Georg Solti. 'Horns in high C' provides insights into the author’s pioneering efforts in the world of music over the course of fifty momentous years.

Book excerpt: Gene Wolfe's In Green's Jungles is the second volume, after On Blue's Waters, of his ambitious SF trilogy, The Book of the Short Sun. It is again narrated by Horn, who has embarked on a quest from his home on the planet Blue in search of the heroic leader Patera Silk. Now Horn's identity has become ambiguous, a complex question embedded in the story, whose telling is itself complex, shifting from place to place, present to past. Horn recalls visiting the Whorl, the enormous spacecraft in orbit that brought the settlers from Urth, and going thence to the planet Green, home of the blood-drinking alien inhumi. There, he led a band of mercenary soldiers, answered to the name of Rajan, and later became the ruler of a city state. He has also encountered the mysterious aliens, the Neighbors, who once inhabited both Blue and Green. He remembers a visit to Nessus, on Urth. At some point, he died. His personality now seemingly inhabits a different body, so that even his sons do not recognize him. And people mistake him for Silk, to whom he now bears a remarkable resemblance. In Green's Jungles is Wolfe's major new fiction, The Book of the Short Sun, building toward a strange and seductive climax. "Wolfe's narrative glows, rich and seductive as ever."--Kirkus Reviews At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Ice triber Yaz has completed a perilous journey and arrived at the Corridor, and it exceeds and overwhelms all of her expectations. Everything seems different but some constants remain: her old enemies are still two steps ahead, bent on her destruction. She makes her way to the Convent of Sweet Mercy, where nuns train young girls who show the old gifts, but like the Corridor itself the convent is packed with peril and opportunity. Yaz has much to learn from the nuns—if they don’t decide to execute her. The fate of everyone squeezed between the Corridor’s vast walls, and ultimately the fate of those laboring to survive out on ice itself, hangs from the moon, and the battle to save the moon centers on the Ark of the Missing, buried beneath the emperor’s palace. Everyone wants Yaz to be the key that will open the Ark – the one the wise have sought for generations. But sometimes wanting isn’t enough.
