Book excerpt: The pioneer history of Bonita Springs stretches back to the 1880s, when an Alabama cotton planter named B. B. Comer bought 6,000 acres of land along Surveyors Creek. He started a tropical fruit plantation, and his tiny village became known as Survey, in honor of the U.S. Army engineers who had first surveyed the region during the Seminole Wars decades before. When Florida started to boom in the early 20th century, investors bought up much of the land in the area. They quickly gave the community the more attractive moniker Bonita Springs and renamed the nearby creek the Imperial River. Beautiful beaches and world-class hunting and fishing soon turned Bonita Springs into a tourist mecca. Popular roadside attractions sprang up along the fast-growing Tamiami Trail, including the Everglades Wonder Gardens, the original Shell Factory, and the famous Naples-Fort Myers Greyhound Track.

Book It Started with a Helmet

Download or read book It Started with a Helmet written by Gerald Sanford and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2021-06-23 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the amazing, true story of Gerald Sanford, a former New York City police officer and FDNY firefighter who retired and moved to Naples, Florida. Retirement didn’t take, and he found himself working at North Naples Fire Control and Rescue District, which is how he stumbled on an early 1900s antique fire helmet. He instantly knew the helmet was from New York City. By an amazing coincidence, Sanford presented the fire helmet back to the FDNY firehouse in the Bronx the day before the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. With the city in ruins, Sanford volunteered to serve the FDNY in one of his former roles—press secretary. In this memoir, he recalls volunteering after 9/11 as well as his earlier years working for the NYPD and FDNY, including his observations of political figures such as Mayor Ed Koch, Mayor David Dinkins, Mayor Rudy Giuliani, and others. Join Sanford as he shares an incredible story about Sept. 11 and how an antique leather helmet led two fire departments to forge a lasting bond.

Book excerpt: Do you know why you were put on the face of this earth? Only God has an answer to that question. The nice thing about being in your twilight years is that you can look back and see what real life can hand you. This is the story of two couples from two different walks of life with different family and professional backgrounds who found out that what you dream and plan may not always turn out the way you expected. This book highlights two special individuals: Vernon Rosser of Nashville, Tennessee, and Joyce Merz, who lived about seventy-five miles away in Tullahoma, Tennessee. Neither one knew the other; however, both of them had contracted an incurable lung disease known as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). This was a viral infection of the lungs without any known cause or cure. These two taught their spouses and those around them a lesson that changed the lives of many.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Jake Devlin, a mellow, laid-back beach bum, begins writing a controversial novel about Gordon Donne, a reclusive, iconoclastic billionaire who buys the United States and sets out to fix all of its problems on behalf of "We, The People," he knows that Donne's autocratic but well-thought-out and common-sense policies will rub corrupt politicians, lobbyists, businessmen, televangelists, speculators, union and mob bosses and hundreds of other greedy power players the wrong way ... dangerously so. But when Jake is confronted on the beach in Bonita Springs, Florida, about his background and motives for writing the book, little does he know that his relaxed lifestyle will inexorably be driven into confusion, chaos, paranoia (for good reasons) and a few unbelievably exotic interludes. A black helicopter, death threats, assassination plots, betrayals, extortion, bribery, ditzy beach bunnies and scrumptious brownies complicate his life and embroil him in a complex web of intrigue with a beautiful woman who may or may not be hiding a deep, dark and painful secret. But is Jake carrying his own deep and possibly dark secret? Begin your journey through this absurdist blend of fiction and reality (and some obligatory gratuitous eroticism) and see for yourself.
