Book Bone Morphogenetic Protein And Collagen An Advances In Tissue Banking Specialist Publication

Download or read book Bone Morphogenetic Protein And Collagen An Advances In Tissue Banking Specialist Publication written by Glyn O Phillips and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2004-01-16 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) and how can they be used in orthopaedic practice? Ever since Urist proposed in 1976 that protein factors from cortical bone appeared to modulate bone healing in animals, there has been a search for these mysterious osteoinductive components. Now that their structure has been elucidated, they have been purified and cloned, and are now available for the improvement of bone healing. The best source of BMPs is demineralised bone. This bone allograft is used to achieve greater osteoinductive capacity. But are the actions of procurement, processing, demineralisation and sterilisation harmful to the BMPs? Unless the BMPs can be assayed, neither their clinical nor their scientific effectiveness can be appraised. All these aspects are logically and scientifically described in this volume. In addition, there is a review of the biochemistry of one of the two main components of bone, namely collagen. This subject is itself a confusing but rapidly growing field. This comprehensive review describes the procedures for building up bone in vivo and in vitro.Bone Morphogenetic Protein and Collagen answers most of the questions of orthopaedic surgeons and tissue bankers on how BMPs can be produced and used to their maximum effectiveness.

Book Clinical Applications of Bone Allografts and Substitutes

Download or read book Clinical Applications of Bone Allografts and Substitutes written by Glyn O. Phillips and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2005 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although bone allografts were first utilized by McEwen in orthopaedic surgery in 1881, progress since then has been sporadic. With the growth of tissue banks and the greater availability of safe and sterile bone grafts, the pace has now quickened; in 2004, more than one million such grafts were used in the USA alone. However, the practice generally remained a ?cottage industry? well into the latter part of the 20th century. This volume provides an international expert evaluaton of the current use of bone, bone substitutes and related allografts, and describes up-to-date practices and clinical results in particular procedures. It will provide a ready reference for readers wishing to carry out an initial survey of the subject.

Book Bone Morphogenetic Proteins Systems Biology Regulators

Download or read book Bone Morphogenetic Proteins Systems Biology Regulators written by Slobodan Vukicevic and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the salient features of the biology of Bone Morphogenetic Proteins and the advances in our understanding of their structure and function and of downstream signaling, as well as their governance in systems biology from bone and dentin to kidney, cancer, diabetes, iron homeostasis and angiogenesis, including rare musculoskeletal disorders. BMPs, also referred to as growth and differentiation factors, are members of the TGF-beta superfamily and are highly conserved from fruit flies to mammals and are responsible for the formation of practically every organ during embryo development and involved in adult tissue injury and repair. BMPs establish their extracellular gradient by interacting with their respective antagonists and regulate their function through SMAD-dependent down-stream signaling effector genes. This volume is aimed at scientists and professionals dealing with metabolic disorders, nutrition, systems biology diseases, rare musculoskeletal conditions, and disorders related to iron metabolism, including anemia of chronic disease, hereditary hemochromatosis and beta thalassemia.

Book Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Download or read book Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery written by Maria Z. Siemionow and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-01-12 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a paradigm shift in plastic and reconstructive surgery from the interest of developing new surgical techniques into the application of new technologies via research based studies on stem cells, tissue engineering and new field of reconstructive transplantation such as e.g. face, hand or larynx transplants. This approach is relatively novel and introduced to plastic surgery within past decade. Thus there is an urgent need to facilitate access to this new knowledge which was not traditionally a part of plastic surgery curriculum. The most efficient way of introducing these new approaches is via presentation of pertinent to different fields (stem cell, transplantation, nerve regeneration, tissue engineering) experimental models which can be used as a tool to develop technologies of interest by different groups of surgeons. These surgical specialities which will be interested and benefit from the book include: plastic and reconstructive surgeons, microsurgeons, hand surgeons, orthopaedic surgeons, neurosurgeons and transplant surgeons.

Book Bone Health and Osteoporosis

Download or read book Bone Health and Osteoporosis written by United States Public Health Service and published by . This book was released on 2004-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first-ever Surgeon General's Report on bone health and osteoporosis illustrates the large burden that bone disease places on our Nation and its citizens. Like other chronic diseases that disproportionately affect the elderly, the prevalence of bone disease and fractures is projected to increase markedly as the population ages. If these predictions come true, bone disease and fractures will have a tremendous negative impact on the future well-being of Americans. But as this report makes clear, they need not come true: by working together we can change the picture of aging in America. Osteoporosis, fractures, and other chronic diseases no longer should be thought of as an inevitable part of growing old. By focusing on prevention and lifestyle changes, including physical activity and nutrition, as well as early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, Americans can avoid much of the damaging impact of bone disease and other chronic diseases. This Surgeon General's Report brings together for the first time the scientific evidence related to the prevention, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of bone disease. More importantly, it provides a framework for moving forward. The report will be another effective tool in educating Americans about how they can promote bone health throughout their lives. This first-ever Surgeon General's Report on bone health and osteoporosis provides much needed information on bone health, an often overlooked aspect of physical health. This report follows in the tradition of previous Surgeon Generals' reports by identifying the relevant scientific data, rigorously evaluating and summarizing the evidence, and determining conclusions.
