Book excerpt: Despite its limitation in terms of surface covered area, the PLD technique still gathers interest among researchers by offering endless possibilities for tuning thin film composition and enhancing their properties of interest due to: (i) the easiness of a stoichiometric transfer even for very complex target materials, (ii) high adherence of the deposited structures to the substrate, (iii) controlled degree of phase, crystallinity, and thickness of deposited coatings, (iv) versatility of the experimental set-up which allows for simultaneous ablation of multiple targets resulting in combinatorial maps or consecutive ablation of multiple targets producing multi-layered structures, and (v) adjustment of the number of laser pulses, resulting in either a spread of nanoparticles, islands of materials or a complete covering of a surface. Moreover, a variation of PLD, known as Matrix Assisted Pulsed Laser Evaporation, allows for deposition of organic materials, ranging from polymers to proteins and even living cells, otherwise difficult to transfer unaltered in the form of thin films by other techniques. Furthermore, the use of laser light as transfer agent ensures purity of films and pulse-to-pulse deposition allows for an unprecedented control of film thickness at the nm level. This Special Issue is a collection of state-of-the art research papers and reviews in which the topics of interest are devoted to thin film synthesis by PLD and MAPLE, for numerous research and industry field applications, such as bio-active coatings for medical implants and hard, protective coatings for cutting and drilling tools withstanding high friction and elevated temperatures, sensors, solar cells, lithography, magnetic devices, energy-storage and conversion devices, controlled drug delivery and in situ microstructuring for boosting of surface properties.

Book excerpt: Hydroxyapetite (HA) coating on medical implant has been used in commercial application for several decades. The coating, commercially made by thermal spray method, functions as a intermediate layer between human tissues and the metal implant. The coating can speed up early stage healing after operation but the life span is much limited by low interfacial bond strength, which comes from the dissolution of amorphous HA in human body fluid during its service. This amorphous phase is formed in coating process under high temperature. To overcome these problems, we have developed a novel room temperature electrophoretic deposition process to fabricate nanostructured HA coating. This nanostructured HA coating significantly improved coating's bond strength up to 50-60 MPa, 2-3 times better than the thermal sprayed HA coating. The nanostructured HA coating also has corrosion resistance 50-100 times higher than the conventional HA coating. X-ray diffraction shows that all the HA coating is fully crystalline phase. It is expected that the implants with the nanostructured HA coating will have much longer service life. Other benefits derived from this process include room temperature deposition, the ability to control the coating microstructure and phases, and low cost for production.

These metallic biomaterials have been declared as clinical success as their mechanical properties that satisfy the prerequisite of the human bone. Nevertheless, critical issues of the materials when they are utilised as implants; including the releasing toxic and harmful metal ions through wear and corrosion processes after longer implantation. Besides that, the bonding strength between bone and implants itself is considered weak due to the different components of human bone and metal implants. Hence, developing hydroxyapatite (HAp) coating on metallic biomaterials is expected to overcome the problems faced by biocompatible metallic biomaterials. As far as this, various commercial techniques have been introduced to develop the HAp coating on metallic biomaterials. The techniques are including plasma-spraying method, sol-gel dip-coating, electrochemical deposition and high-velocity suspension plasma-spraying. The formation of HAp coating on metallic biomaterials improved the corrosion resistance together promoting its load-bearing ability and enhanced substrate-coating adhesion.

Book excerpt: Titanium and titanium alloys are increasingly used in load bearing implant applications due to their high biocompatibility and excellent mechanical properties. The adhesion of bone tissues with the surface of titanium implants is poor, however, and results in weak tissue-to-implant bonding and reduced implant longevity. Current orthopedic hip implants are reported to experience various forms of failure with an average lifespan of 10-20 years in 90% of the patients, a timespan that many patients outlive. Implants often require revision surgery that is usually more challenging and painful than the primary operation. A popular approach to encourage early osseointegration is through modification of the implant surface by application of a hydroxyapatite coating, a method which is traditionally carried out via a plasma spray deposition process. However, the high processing temperatures used in plasma spray can result in unwanted phase transformations of hydroxyapatite as well as poor adhesion and fatigue strength. Thus, there is a need to engineer a hydroxyapatite coating method that facilitates good mechanical stability while maintaining the excellent bioactivity and osteoconductive properties of hydroxyapatite to ultimately increase implant lifespan. In this research, it was hypothesized that cold spray technology can be used to fabricate functionally graded hydroxyapatite-titanium composite coatings with a high hydroxyapatite composition on the outer surface to provide better biological response and high titanium composition in the inner coating layer to ensure adequate adhesion strength. Further, it was also hypothesized that by preprocessing the hydroxyapatite-titanium powder mixture with high energy ball milling, the deposition behavior of hydroxyapatite can be improved.
