Book Tropical Rainforest Responses to Climatic Change

Download or read book Tropical Rainforest Responses to Climatic Change written by Mark B. Bush and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this book is to provide a current overview of the impacts of climate change on tropical forests, to investigate past, present, and future climatic influences on the ecosystems with the highest biodiversity on the planet.Tropical Rainforest Responses to Climatic Change will be the first book to examine how tropical rain forest ecology is altered by climate change, rather than simply seeing how plant communities were altered. Shifting the emphasis onto ecological processes e.g. how diversity is structured by climate and the subsequent impact on tropical forest ecology, provides the reader with a more comprehensive coverage. A major theme of this book that emerges progressively is the interaction between humans, climate and forest ecology. While numerous books have appeared dealing with forest fragmentation and conservation, none have explicitly explored the long term occupation of tropical systems, the influence of fire and the future climatic effects of deforestation, coupled with anthropogenic emissions. Incorporating modelling of past and future systems paves the way for a discussion of conservation from a climatic perspective, rather than the usual plea to stop logging.

Book Geoheritage of Volcanic Harrats in Saudi Arabia

Download or read book Geoheritage of Volcanic Harrats in Saudi Arabia written by Mohammed Rashad Moufti and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-24 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book records the geoheritage values of globally significant, yet little-known, volcanic geosites in Saudi Arabia. It is the first of its kind to focus on the Middle East, clearly showing the hidden geoheritage value of the volcanic Arabian Peninsula’s harrats and demonstrating why the Saudi Arabian volcanic fields are unique. Along with the systematic geosite description, the book introduces scientifically founded geoeducational programs that can be used to develop our understanding of volcanic geoheritage values of volcanic fields. It offers a detailed and comprehensive research-based description of four of the most accessible volcanic harratts in Saudi Arabia and an additional summary of other more remote fields. Additionally, it discusses geoeducational programs that could be used to link these volcanic areas and use them in volcanic hazard education.

Book Environmental Geomorphology

Download or read book Environmental Geomorphology written by Mario Panizza and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1996-11-20 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geomorphology has now reached a certain level where the methodology, scientific content and resultsbeing published in the field make it worthy of being considered as a major environmental researcharea. In preparing Environmental Geomorphology, the author has given priority to methodology and illustrative case-histories. Schemes and classifications that would be ill-suited fora naturalistic, empirical and non-systematic discipline like geomorphology have been avoided. The concepts outlined in the text are based on a subdivision of geomorphological resources andhazards (as well as their links with man) together with the consequent risk and impactproblems. Each investigation, study or intervention concerning the environment, cannot ignoreeither the human context in which it occurs or man's history and prospects. It is necessary to have theright dialogue and relationship with the other disciplines making up this system so as to apply the mostsuitable methodologies and offer the most valid solutions. For some subjects covered in the book, specialists concerned with a particular section of environmental geomorphology were consulted. The text of eachchapter is accompanied by several illustrative schemes, figures and photographs, derived from realresearch and professional experiences. The volume is addressed both to university students studying topics of geomorphology as part of their syllabus, and to researchers and consultants(geologists, geographers, engineers, naturalists, etc.) working in the field.

Book Characterisation and Engineering Properties of Natural Soils

Download or read book Characterisation and Engineering Properties of Natural Soils written by T. S. Tan and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 836 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first volume of a specialty 2-volume work contains 34 papers pertaining to the natural behaviour of diverse geomaterials found in different parts of the world. Each paper is organized along the outline: location and distribution, engineering geology, composition, state and index properties, structure, engineering properties, quality / reliability of data with reference to methods of sampling and testing, and relation to engineering problems. This extensive body of collated knowledge is integrated by three overview papers covering engineering geology, mechanical behaviour and engineering implications. Topics: Overview papers; Marine clays; Eastuarine Clays; Lacustrine clays; Stiff clays; Sands and other cohesionless soils; Residual and other tropical Soils; Weak rock.

Book Advances in Mexican Limnology Basic and Applied Aspects

Download or read book Advances in Mexican Limnology Basic and Applied Aspects written by Javier Alcocer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume comprises aspects of both basic and applied limnology. They include works on physical, chemical, and biological limnology, as well as experimental approaches in selected areas. Contributions from investigators regarding aquatic conservation and biodiversity were specifically not available and therefore, these aspects are considered in various included works. Most manuscripts deal with lentic aquatic resources. This is not surprising since Mexican limnology followed the general study trend of that from temperate limnology. Despite this, we must emphasize that lotic resources in Mexico are quite important both locally and regionally. This does not mean that rivers are not under limnological research in Mexico, just that their study has only recently begun. It is the intention of the volume to stimulate a larger section of limnologists to further research in this field. It is to be hoped that policy-framing governmental authorities in Mexico will benefit from it, and consider some of the aspects described so that further damage to the epicontinental waterbodies can be halted, and remedial measures can be considered in the future.
