Download or read book Walking with Pilgrims written by Ruma Bose and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-23 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume makes a contribution to understanding pilgrimage, not as a transient activity at the margins of daily life, but as an event grounded firmly in the physical, symbolic and social experience of the everyday world. The vital relationship between pilgrimage and society is explored via a focus on a specific pilgrimage – the Kanwar pilgrimage of Bihar and Jharkhand in India and the southeast Terai of Nepal. The rising popularity of this old but relatively unknown pilgrimage is striking and reflects profound changes in caste, class and gender relationships, subjectivity and notions of work in a modern economy. Through the lens of pilgrimage and pilgrims, the book explores the everyday context of life in parts of rural Bihar and southeast Nepal, questions about agency and desire in Hinduism, and the meaning given to symbolic life in a changing world. This requires an integrative approach looking beyond the performance of the pilgrimage to the historical, economic and social-cultural context. The volume underscores the role of popular and local history in understanding the life and popularity of a complex phenomenon, such as the pilgrimage today. Equal importance is given to the geography and climatic conditions, for natural rhythms such as that of rains, rivers, planetary movements, were and still are, intimately entwined with the agricultural, socio-economic and ritual cycles. The particular experience of the world that this engenders and its relationship to the pilgrimage is described through the active voice of the pilgrims and descriptions of rites, some new and many fast disappearing. Book excerpt: A Good Morning America and PureWow Best Book of January A Goodreads Buzziest Book of the New Year A January Indie Next Pick & Debutiful Most Anticipated Book of 2023 “A marvel.” —Kevin Wilson “Funny, moving, and often deliciously cynical.” —Tiphanie Yanique After living in the US for years, Maneka Roy returns home to India to mourn the loss of her mother and finds herself in a new world. The booming city of Hrishipur where her father now lives is nothing like the part of the country where she grew up, and the more she sees of this new, sparkling city, the more she learns that nothing—and no one—here is as it appears. Ultimately, it will take an unexpected tragic event for Maneka and those around her to finally understand just how fragile life is in this city built on aspirations. Written from the perspectives of ten different characters, Oindrila Mukherjee’s incisive debut novel explores class divisions, gender roles, and stories of survival within a society that is constantly changing and becoming increasingly Americanized. It’s a story about India today, and people impacted by globalization everywhere: a tale of ambition, longing, and bitter loss that asks what it really costs to try and build a dream.

Book excerpt: Sugauna Diaries', a memoir based on the experience of the past and the present, captures in the form of snippets, the vibrant life of Sugauna, a village in the Madhubani district of north Bihar. Whether it be the juicy gossip of women just outside the author's study, or the quirky village life, or some outside stories related to the author's life, everything is laid bare. The book also reminisces the author's life in some Delhi publication houses or his pulls for trains. The colloquialism the book is alive with and the author's dig at the eccentricities, fads and fancies of the village, make it all the more interesting.
Download or read book My Beloved Life written by Amitava Kumar and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2024-02-27 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exceptionally moving novel that traces the arc of a man's life, starting from his 1935 birth in a small village in India. Jadunath Kunwar's beginnings are humble, even inauspicious. His mother, while pregnant, nearly dies from a cobra bite. And this is only the first of many challenges in store for Jadu. As his life skates between the mythical and the mundane, Jadu finds meaning in the most unexpected places. He meets the sherpa who first summited Everest. He befriends poets and politicians. He becomes a historian. And he has a daughter, Jugnu, a television journalist with a career in the United States—whose perspective sheds new light on Jadu. All the while, currents of huge change sweep across India—from Independence to Partition, Gandhi to Modi, the Mahabharata to Somerset Maugham, cholera to covid—and buffet both Jadu and Jugnu’s lives. Piercing, fleet-footed, and undeniably resonant, here is a novel from a singularly gifted writer about how we tell stories and write history, how individuals play a counterpoint to big movements, how no single life is without consequence.

Download or read book Beyond Dalma written by Sweta Biswal and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2023-12-11 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The food on our plates has always been inextricably linked to the agricultural cycle. The numerous festivals and rituals that crop up on the Odia calendar (or Panji) with unfailing regularity, inevitably extend clues to eat what’s best in the season. This book takes one through the never-ending cycle of pray, eat and repeat while delving into the intricacies of the interrelationships between the agrarian calendar, the festivals observed in the various parts of the state of Odisha and the changing seasons. Beyond Dalma attempts to focus on the similarities rather than the diversities of the Odia cuisine which itself is an interesting amalgamation of various micro-cuisines that have evolved independently, shaped by diverse stimuli for the better part of history. At the same time, one cannot discount that dynamic exchanges among various micro-culinary traditions have always occurred due to a multitude of reasons ranging from trade to migrations to even marriages. The resulting culinary legacy is one that can be best described as a curious interplay between heterogeneity and homogeneity. The recipes are carefully selected keeping the focus on the seasonal aspects of the cuisine rather than emphasizing the regional aspects. However, a mild proclivity towards Western Odisha may be discernible at times as the author has spent a substantial part of her life in that region. The recipes are curated based on local and seasonal produce, and designed to help one adhere to a sustainable, low-carbon footprint lifestyle that is harmoniously aligned with mother nature’s basket rather than the supermarket shelves.

Book excerpt: During a trip to India, retiree Annie and her friend Leila hire Amarnath as their driver in Rajasthan. Having fallen in love with India's colours, aromas, sights, sounds, and people, the friends return for another vacation. This time, Annie's and Amarnath's lives become linked in unexpected ways. Annie travels to India many more times and acquaints herself with the unknown, exotic culture in the circle of Amarnath's family and clan. She chances upon the most unusual adventures - unusual for a western, middle-class woman. The novel is, in equal measure, a testimony to love and a fascinating evocation of Indian culture, seen through Annie's eyes. It brilliantly captures love's triumph over inevitable culture clashes, embedded in narratives about Rajasthan's architecture, legends, art, festivals, and ordinary family life.
Download or read book God s Gateway written by James Lochtefeld and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-01-27 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A celebrated Hindu pilgrimage site, Hardwar lies on the river Ganges at the edge of the Himalayas. Its identity as a holy place is inextricably tied to the mythology and reality of the Ganges, and traditional sources overwhelmingly stress this connection. Virtually nothing has been written about Hardwar's history and development, although the historical record reveals striking changes of the past few centuries. These changes have usually reflected worldly forces such as shifting trade routes, improved transportation, or political instability. Yet such mundane influences have been ignored in the city's sacred narrative, which presents a fixed, unchanging identity. The city's complex identity, says Lochtefeld, lies in the tension between these differing narratives. In this fieldwork-based study, Lochtefeld analyzes modern Hardwar as a Hindu pilgrimage center. He looks first at various groups of local residents -- businessmen, hereditary priests, and ascetics -- and assesses their differing roles in managing Hardwar as a holy place. He then examines the pilgrims and the factors that bring them to Hardwar. None of these groups is as pious as popularly depicted, but their interactions in upholding their own interest create and maintain Hardwar's religious environment. In conclusion, he addresses the wider context of Indian pilgrimage and the forces shaping it in the present day. He finds that many modern Hindus, like many modern Christians, feel some dissonance between traditional religious symbols and their 21st-century world, and that they are reinterpreting their traditional symbols to make them meaningful for their time.

Book excerpt: It took me a couple of hours to gain the energy to get up. Reluctantly, I left my bed and headed to the shower. I closed my eyes, enjoying the warmth of the hot water running down my skin. Blood pooled on the bathroom floor, washing off from my body. I gasped loudly as a bullet whizzed past me, missing my head by a very slight margin. Somebody close by screamed loudly, jolting me awake. I had slumped against the wall and dozed off because of the heavy doses. The shower was still on and clear water ran down. I looked around, dazed. There were no signs of blood or bullets. I hurriedly got out of the bathroom. I need to get out of the house as soon as possible to remain sane. Everybody has a past; everyone lies; there’s a secret love hidden in every heart. But it looks like Veronica has more than her mysterious smile. How far are you willing to go for your love? How much would you deceive? What can you do to be with the love of your life? Can you die? Can you kill?
