Book Last of the Old Time Outlaws

Download or read book Last of the Old Time Outlaws written by Karen Holliday Tanner and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2014-11-14 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soft-spoken, cheerful, handsome, and well dressed, George West Musgrave “looked more like a senator than a cattle rustler.” Yet he was a cattle rustler as well as a bandit, robber, and killer, “guilty of more crimes than Billy the Kid was ever accused of.” In Last of the Old-Time Outlaws, Karen Holliday Tanner and John D. Tanner, Jr., recount the colorful life of Musgrave (1877-1947), enduring badman of the American Southwest. Musgrave was a charter member of the High Five/Black Jack gang, which was responsible for Arizona’s first bank hold-up, numerous post office and stagecoach robberies, and the largest Santa Fe Railroad heist in history. Following a decade-long hunt, he was captured and acquitted of killing a former Texas Ranger. After this near brush with prison or execution, he headed for South America, where he gained fame as the leading Gringo rustler. It wasn’t until the 1940s that Musgrave’s age and poor health brought an end to a criminal career that had spanned two continents and two centuries. Incorporating previously unknown facts about the career of this frontier outlaw, the Tanners thoroughly document Musgrave’s half-century of crime, from his childhood in the Texas brush country to his final days in Paraguay.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One reviewer described Bohemia Junction as Forty years of adventurous living condensed into one book. It is all that and more! Aime Tschiffely was the most famous equestrian traveler of the twentieth century because of his legendary 10,000 mile ride from Argentina to Washington DC in 1925. Readers won t be surprised then to discover that exotic people, faraway places and equestrian adventure make up the background to the explorer s autobiography. Bohemia Junction is packed with the amazing assortment of humanity that Tschiffely met during his lifetime of travel, including cowboys, prize-fighters, writers, Indians, and the eccentric riff-raff of three continents. From Cape Horn to New York, Tschiffely journeyed wherever his vagabond fancy took him. And each region explored had its quota of bohemians in the old sense of the word men and women for whom love of adventure was a reality. Bohemia Junction delivers more than just an account of the famous equestrian traveler s life. It gives the reader an exuberant drama, peopled by the reckless rough-necks of a now bygone age. No equestrian travel collection is complete without this timeless classic.

Download or read book Czech It Out written by Miloslav Rechcigl, Jr. and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-07-23 with total page 906 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Czech it Out: Czech American Biography Sourcebook provides a wealth of information on a variety of sources relating to biographical information on notable Americans with Czech roots. Besides the national figures, also included are information sources on significant individuals at the state, regional, and local levels. Beyond that, we saw it fit to also incorporate ethnic information sources, which frequently contain a wealth of information on pioneer settlers and individuals active at the community level. Having in mind the interests of genealogists in individual families and their descendents, a listing has also been provided on family histories and genealogies. Even though Czechs have been living in the US practically since colonial times, no composite biographical dictionary exists about the accomplished Czech Americans. Biographical information about them is scattered in a plethora of sources, which are difficult to find and some are not readily accessible. The present author, who, literally, devoted several decades of his life to the study of Czech-American history, has canvassed hundreds of sources at national and local levels to identify, not only notable individuals but also pioneer settlers who played a significant role in the growth and development of the US. This publication should fill a great void in literature until a comprehensive biographical compendium about Czech Americans has been written.
