For his long-standing struggle and contribution in fostering notions of Bengali nationhood that led to the independence of Bangladesh, he has been honored as the Father of the Nation. The volumes provide records for period 1948 to 1971 and chronologically elucidate the trajectory of the various movements and political struggles that led to the formation of an independent nation state called People's Republic of Bangladesh. These include the 1952 Bengali Language Movement that catalyzed the assertion of Bengali national identity in the region and became a forerunner to Bengali nationalist movements. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman led the struggle for independence, first through massive populist and civil disobedience movements and later during the Bangladesh Liberation War. Important events cited in the present volumes include the 1954 United Front election victory, 1966 Six Point Movement, 1968 Agartala Conspiracy Case, 1969 mass uprising, 1970 election victory and 1971 Non-Cooperation Movement among others. These are the first ever declassified documents released by the Government of Bangladesh and will serve as an invaluable historical resource in understanding the liberation of Bangladesh. This fourth volume holds records for the period 1954-1957. Events included are as follows: WCR; the extracts & proceedings from various public meetings; grounds of detentions; a trip to Karachi to meet Pakistan’s Law Minister; Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s decision to observe 25th May as ‘The Food Day’; criticism on the failure of Central & Provincial Govt.; the Hunger rally in Chittagong; the presentation of the report at the East Pakistan Awami League’s council session as the General Secretary; an appeal to the President Iskandar Mirza to investigate the food crisis and the resignation of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman from the cabinet portfolio of commerce and industry & other incidents.

Book excerpt: The major purpose of this study is to determine the extent of poverty and ascertain the causes and possible ways for poverty alleviation as perceived by the rural people. Poverty alleviation was measured by computing the change in food availability, sources of drinking water, physical assets, sanitation and increasing scope of income due to involvement in the Chars Livelihoods Programme (CLP). Field work for the study was carried out in Haldia union of Shaghata upazila under Gaibandha district of Bangladesh. Data was collected from January to February 2007 from a randomly selected sample of 102 CLP beneficiaries from a total of 148 through personal contact by using interview schedules, made by the researcher himself, which contained simple and direct questions with different scales. The paired “t” test was used to measure the comparative change of ‘before’ and ‘after’ involvement in CLP. Pearson product moment correlation co-efficient was computed in order to explore the relationship between the selected characteristics of the respondents and their poverty alleviation.

Prahalad’s work has called attention to creative ways to think about the question of poverty and how it might be reduced and eventually eliminated. He suggests ways of thinking and acting that break many of the traditional rigidities that occur in how we think about markets and business practices. Although one theme of Prahalad’s work relates to the benefits of marketing to the poor by supplying products better fitting the needs of low income individuals and groups, his work also emphasizes ways in which the poor can produce innovatively conceived and designed products for themselves and for others. This emphasis on enabling the poor to become productive is also presented forcefully in many of the chapters of this book, just as it is in Craig and Peter Wilson’s, Make Poverty Business: Increase Profits and Reduce Risks by Engaging with the Poor Greenleaf 2O06).

Book excerpt: This book evolved from a collaborative research project between the University of Manitoba, Canada and Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh, which commenced in 1984 to study the problems of river channel migration, rural population displacement and land relocation in Bangladesh. The study was sponsored by the International Development Research Center (IDRC), based in Ottawa, Canada. It was through this project that I started my journey into disaster research more than thirteen years ago with basically an applied problem of massive magnitude in Bangladesh. I spent two- and-a half-years, in two stages, in Bangladesh's riparian villages to collect the empirical data for this study. Then the growing disaster discourse throughout the 1980s, especially its conceptual and theoretical areas, drew me in further, gluing my interest to these issues. In the 1990s, during my research and teaching at Brandon University, Canada, I realized that, despite the large body of literature on natural disasters, there was no work that synthesized the approaches to nature-triggered disasters in a comprehensive form, with sufficient empirical substantiation. In addition, despite the great deal of attention given to disasters in Bangladesh, I found no detailed reference book on the topic. Natural hazards and disasters, in my view, should be studied under a holistic framework encompassing the natural environment, society and individuals. Overreaction to the limitations of technocratic-scientific approaches-the control and prevention of physical events through specialized knowledge and skills-has resulted in a call for "taking the naturalness out of natural disasters.
