Book Bobcat Population Estimation and Activity Patterns of Forest Carnivores in East Texas Using Infrared Triggered Cameras and GIS

Download or read book Bobcat Population Estimation and Activity Patterns of Forest Carnivores in East Texas Using Infrared Triggered Cameras and GIS written by Matthew Edward Symmank and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reliable population estimation techniques for cryptic forest predators are generally lacking. Development of an efficient and reliable technique to directly estimate predator populations would be a valuable tool for wildlife managers concerned with predator management. Understanding the temporal variation in activity patterns of forest carnivores is also important to researchers interested in possible resource partitioning among predator species. Trailmaster ® 1500 active infrared-triggered cameras were used to conduct a bobcat (Lynx rufus) population estimation survey on a 1,318-ha private land holding located 15 kilometers west of the city of Nacogdoches, TX. A total of 15 bobcat photographic events were recorded of seven separate individuals. These data were used to derive a population abundance estimate of seven to fourteen bobcats during the twelve-week study period using the computer program CAPTURE. A density of 0.29--0.58 bobcats/km 2 was estimated. During the survey period, the activity patterns of four forest carnivores were monitored. A total of 161 capture events (18 bobcat, 109 raccoon (Prycon lotor), 21 Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana), and 13 coyote (Canis latrans)) were recorded during a 17 week camera trapping period comprised of 1,722 trap nights. Raccoons, coyotes and Virginia opossums were found to be mainly nocturnal while bobcats were active during nocturnal, diurnal, and crepuscular periods. Overall, 73.4% of predator activity was recorded nocturnally. No difference in raccoon (X 2 = 0.7755, P = 0.9417) or Virginia opossum (X 2 = 5.4286, P = 0.2461) nocturnal activity was found between moon phases.

Book Habitat Selection and Demography of Bobcats Lynx Rufus in Iowa

Download or read book Habitat Selection and Demography of Bobcats Lynx Rufus in Iowa written by Stephanie Ann Koehler and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the mid-1900s, bobcats have been rare throughout the Corn Belt of the Midwest because of historic habitat loss and unregulated harvest. Recently, reports of bobcat occurrences have increased in Iowa, motivating study of the mechanisms enabling them to re-colonize this fragmented, agricultural landscape. I determined habitat selection of bobcats by radio-collaring 44 bobcats in south-central Iowa during 2003-2005. Annual home range size of males (56.36 km2) was larger than that of females (20.16 km2). Females used smaller home ranges during April-September (15.64 km2), as compared to October-March (26.30 km2). Similarly, core size of males (8.75 km2) was larger than that of females (2.26 km2), and females used smaller cores in the April-September (1.66 km2) as compared to October-March (3.09 km2). Compositional analysis along with standardized selection ratios illustrate that bobcats were selecting forest habitat about twice as frequently than any other habitat class, including grassland and CRP, at both landscape and within home-range scales. Predictive models indicated that home range and core area was smaller in landscapes where forest and grassland habitat was less fragmented. Predictive models indicated home range shape was more circular in landscapes with low forest patch density within the home range. I estimated demographic parameters from 265 bobcat carcasses and the live-captures. The proportion of females in the population was 0.46. Mean age was 1.29 years and the oldest bobcat was aged at 9 years. Bobcats [less than or equal to 2 years of age comprised 66% of the age distribution. Mean litter size as determined from placental scars ranged from 2.50-3.00. Pregnancy rates of adult females ranged from 0.76-1.00. Annual survival of 44 radio-collared bobcats was 0.82. Automobile collisions (33%) and incidental trapping (22%) were the 2 most common causes of death. Annual survival as calculated from the age distribution (0.56) was considerably lower than that estimated from the radio-collared bobcats. Population growth estimates determined from life table analysis indicated a rate of annual growth ranging from 1.13-1.52, depending on assumptions.

Book Population Genetics and Phylogeography of Bobcats Lynx Rufus Using Microsatellites and Mitochondrial DNA

Download or read book Population Genetics and Phylogeography of Bobcats Lynx Rufus Using Microsatellites and Mitochondrial DNA written by Emily Katherine Croteau and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bobcats (Lynx rufus) are generalist carnivores with an expansive range from southern Canada to northern Mexico, in which 11 - 12 subspecies have been described. Presently, there is little information on the genetic structure of bobcat populations at large spatial scales. Furthermore, it is unknown whether the current isolation of bobcat populations is a historic feature, or whether recent landscape alterations have disrupted dispersal among previously connected populations. These data reveal that bobcats have not historically experienced large barriers to dispersal. Recent habitat alterations may be disrupting dispersal over large scales.

Book excerpt: Bobcat: Master of Survival tells the story of the most adaptable and resilient wild feline in the world. While half the wild cat species worldwide are in danger, the bobcat is thriving, even expanding its range in North America. Why are bobcats flourishing when so many other wild felines are advancing towards extinction? The book explains how scientists apply the latest in wildlife research technology to probe this diminutive predator's habits and behavior. The reader is invited inside the bobcat's world to see how they hunt, kill prey, raise their young, coexist with humans, and deftly navigate the endless obstacles to survival. The bobcat is both the most studied and the most exploited wild feline in the world. Millions have been killed for the fur trade. They were the focus of major controversy in the 1970s that transformed international conservation of wild felines. The book discusses how economics and politics play a far greater role in bobcat management and conservation than does science. Bobcat is the most comprehensive and up-to-date book on the natural history and management of bobcats to appear in 40 years.

Book Occupancy Abundance and Population Genetics of Bobcats in Western Maryland USA

Download or read book Occupancy Abundance and Population Genetics of Bobcats in Western Maryland USA written by Kevin J. Lamp and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monitoring the status and trends of bobcat (Lynx rufus) distribution, abundance, and population genetics are important to wildlife professionals tasked with bobcat conservation and management. In Maryland, USA, bobcats are expanding their distribution east of bobcat range (i.e., Garrett and Allegany counties, Maryland), likely indicating an increase in abundance and prompting interest in bobcats' status within western Maryland. My objectives were to 1) evaluate the efficacy of non-invasive genetic sampling techniques to detect and individually identify bobcats, 2) evaluate and predict bobcat occupancy, 3) estimate and compare bobcat abundance using 2 methods, and 4) assess bobcat population structure and genetic diversity in western Maryland. I conducted my study on 3 study areas in western Maryland including areas within and surrounding Potomac-Garrett, Savage River, and Green Ridge State Forests. On each study area, I overlaid a 5 x 8 grid network of 40 cells, each cell 5.5 km2 in size, to evenly distribute hair snare and camera locations. During January-March 2019 I conducted hair snaring surveys, scat collection surveys, and snow tracking surveys to compare each non-invasive genetic sampling technique by detections using mitochondrial DNA and individually identified samples using 10 microsatellite loci. During January-March 2019 and 2020, I placed 1 camera in each grid cell and visited cameras weekly to collect photo data and re-bait each location. I used single-season occupancy and Royle-Nichols models to estimate bobcat occupancy and abundance, respectively, over both years and all study areas. I surveyed transects consisting of hiking trails, closed or lightly used roads, and off-highway vehicle trails from May-August 2019 to collect scat samples. I screened scats by species and identified bobcat scats to the individual level for use in spatially explicit capture-recapture (SECR) models. I assessed population structure using the Bayesian clustering method in program STRUCTURE and principal coordinate analysis. In addition, I examined genetic diversity using heterozygosity and number of alleles per locus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Late one June night in 2011, a large animal collided with an SUV cruising down a Connecticut parkway. The creature appeared as something out of New England's forgotten past. Beside the road lay a 140-pound mountain lion. Speculations ran wild, the wildest of which figured him a ghostly survivor from a bygone century when lions last roamed the eastern United States. But a more fantastic scenario of facts soon unfolded. The lion was three years old, with a DNA trail embarking from the Black Hills of South Dakota on a cross-country odyssey eventually passing within thirty miles of New York City. It was the farthest landbound trek ever recorded for a wild animal in America, by a barely weaned teenager venturing solo through hostile terrain. William Stolzenburg retraces his two-year journey--from his embattled birthplace in the Black Hills, across the Great Plains and the Mississippi River, through Midwest metropolises and remote northern forests, to his tragic finale upon Connecticut's Gold Coast. Along the way, the lion traverses lands with people gunning for his kind, as well as those championing his cause. Heart of a Lion is a story of one heroic creature pitting instinct against towering odds, coming home to a society deeply divided over his return. It is a testament to the resilience of nature, and a test of humanity's willingness to live again beside the ultimate symbol of wildness.
