Book The Life of Robert Loraine

Download or read book The Life of Robert Loraine written by Lanayre D. Liggera and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2013-08-15 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Loraine was born in a niche of time when technology exploded into a world whose keyword was Progress. Both he and his life-long friend George Bernard Shaw believed they were in an evolutionary period of humanity. Born into a theatrical family, he understood its clashes of temperament and competition for the attention of the audience. He was fortunate to be playing in London by age twenty-one, and securing lead roles two years later. Thus, it was incomprehensible to his peers when he volunteered to fight in the Boer War. After his year of service, he heeded his father’s advice; first conquer London, and then America He accepted a contract from Daniel Frohman in New York. Four years of dusty old plots led him to yearn for something new, which he found in Shaw’s Man and Superman. A two year tour in the role of John Tanner led him to professional and financial success. This lust for something new led him beyond the perimeters of the stage into pioneer aviation. Visualizing the aeroplane’s unlimited potential, he challenged the theory that flight could only take place in calm weather by flying through a raging thunderstorm. Ever of a military mind, he also demonstrated the machine’s capacity for scouting at military maneuvers. With political storm clouds closing in again in 1914, Robert volunteered six days before his country declared war on Germany. Dispatched to the Royal Flying Corps, he served all four years of the war, rose to the highest rank of any civilian, and was gravely wounded twice. Robert married at age forty-five, but the compromises of domesticity did not come easily to him. His young wife, Winifred, suffered through the downward spiral of an aging actor. The thirties brought the great depression and he returned to the United States, attempting to make money on Broadway or in Hollywood. Finally able to return to England in November, 1935, he died two days before Christmas.

Book The Man Who Robbed the Pierre

Download or read book The Man Who Robbed the Pierre written by Ira Berkow and published by Diversion Publishing Corp.. This book was released on 2014-08-12 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Pulitzer Prize–winning author’s true account of the thief behind the famed 1972 heist is “an engrossing crime biography . . . [and] a fast-paced romp” (Kirkus Reviews). Growing up in Rochester, New York, Bobby Comfort wanted to be a good something. It just so happened that he was great at being a criminal. In January 1972, men in tuxedos robbed the Pierre, the luxurious Manhattan hotel, and got away with eleven million dollars’ worth of cash and jewelry. The police were baffled by how such a large-scale operation could go off so smoothly. The answer lay in the leader of the thieves, a man by the name of Bobby Comfort. He had taken to crime from a young age with card sharping and petty theft. Eventually, taking money from the rich was where he excelled. Sort of like Robin Hood—except for the part where he kept the loot himself—Comfort masterminded what was, at the time, the most lucrative heist in history, while appearing to his neighbors like an ordinary suburban family man. In this blend of insightful biography and true crime, Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Ira Berkow chronicles the story, using first-hand accounts to weave together a fascinating portrait of a criminal and “a corking good cops-and-robbers tale” (Library Journal).

Book Top of the World Tales of Mystery Suspense and Adventure

Download or read book Top of the World Tales of Mystery Suspense and Adventure written by Glen Cadigan and published by Rocketship Press. This book was released on 2016-11-19 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seven stories of mystery, suspense, and adventure featuring a coin from the future, a post-apocalyptic nightmare, a soldier surrounded by ghosts, and a rock concert turned séance! Plus a clown war, a scientist who thinks he's found the way to Heaven, and the true meaning of love! Top Of The World – in the wake of a planet wide plague, three mountaineers decide to climb Mt. Everest. Their argument is simple: "Why should dreams die, just because the world did?" But first they must cross the Bering Sea, then continental Asia, before they face the mountain itself. Along the way are the infected, the mockeries of humanity that stand in their way and threaten to contaminate them. And if they do make it to the top of the world, the question remains: what then? What is left for them in a world where everything they've ever known has been lost? The Coin – When Richard Harding’s uncle dies he leaves his nephew his coin collection, complete with a brand new 2012 dime. The problem is the year is 1982, and as the decades fade away, Richard must determine the significance of the coin before 2012 arrives. Stay Off The East Side – For years the east side was home to hobos, hookers, and bums. But now that it’s become gentrified, all the little kiddies want clowns for their birthday parties. The problem? The east side belongs to the local clown union 1344, and the 1802 doesn’t like it. They want a piece, and they’re willing to fight to get it! Houdini – Journey back to the hair metal days of the ‘80s and follow the band Miracle Machine as it goes on tour to promote its self-titled album. They’re a band on the rise, and their top song tells the story of Harry Houdini himself. The best part of their show is when they try to summon him to the stage as part of a séance, and with thousands of eager fans chanting his name, will Houdini answer their call? Valentine’s Day – It’s a story as old as the Earth itself: boy meets girl, boy falls in love, girl doesn’t love boy back. That forces the boy to get his hands on a love potion, but isn’t there a saying about getting what you wish for? Everything Is Everything – Dr. Michael Webber is a physics professor at a small university when his wife and children are killed in a plane crash. He then uses his knowledge of quantum mechanics to try to answer two questions: is Heaven real, and can he find it if it is? Haunted – When Mark Doren returns home from Iraq with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, he takes the only job he can find, that of night watchman in a downtown office tower. Then he starts to see ghosts, and as he walks its halls at night, he becomes painfully aware that he is not alone…. These are the stories that await within the pages of Top of the World!
