The Flxible Company used this challenge as an opportunity to enter the bus-building business. The first Flxible bus was built in 1924, and was among only a few Flxibles built in the 1920s. The real boost in Flxible's bus production came in 1936 with the introduction of the Flxible Airway coach, mounted on a Chevrolet truck chassis. Read and see photos of the Flxible Airway coaches and other Flxible intercity buses like the Clipper, Visicoach, C-37, Starliner, Vistaliner, Hi-level models, Flxliner, and more.

Book Censorship the Control of Print

Download or read book Censorship the Control of Print written by Robin Myers and published by Oak Knoll Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The medium of print has always been identified as a crucial element in the exercise of power. Since the invention of printing a combination of interests - political, religious and cultural - have borne down on the Press in an attempt to shape and contain its output. Each stage of the production and distribution of printed material can be seen as a battlefield of competing ideologies, whether organized through such institutions as the Stationers' Company, Parliament, and the lending library, or represented by broad divisions within society at large. In this collection of essays leading scholars investigate the interaction between authors, publishers, booksellers, readers and regulatory bodies in England and France across three centuries, and show the key role that the book trade - resisting or adapting to external pressure - has played in defining what is permissible to publish. - See more at: http://www.oakknoll.com/pages/books/37463/robin-myers-michael-harris/censorship-and-the-control-of-print-in-england-and-france-1600-1910#sthash.LH8UYKGk.dpuf -- Publisher's website.

Book Plastic Toy Cars of the 1950s and 1960s

Download or read book Plastic Toy Cars of the 1950s and 1960s written by Andrew Ralston and published by Veloce Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2007 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of Dinky Toys, Corgi Toys and other makers of diecast metal cars has been covered in great detail in many books and magazine articles; by contrast, information on plastic toy cars is much harder to come by. Yet collectors are taking an increasing interest in plastic cars, particularly as the rise in the value of early diecast and tinplate models has put many of these out of reach of the average enthusiast. For the first time, this book aims to provide a systematic introduction to the vast number of plastic cars made during the 1950s and 1960s. Years of research have enabled the author to uncover many fascinating facts about the companies who made these toys. Some were major players in the toy industry, like Tri-ang and Brimtoy in the UK, Norev and Minialuxe in France, Gama and Siku in Germany and Ingap in Italy. Many others, though, were more obscure, and some only modeled one car before disappearing without trace. More than 250 photographs of these toys are included, with the emphasis being on the most colorful and realistic examples, all of them based on real vehicles of the period. In many cases, the toy is pictured alongside its original box, the presence of which can often double the value of the item to a collector. Readers will also find a handy glossary listing the names of many of the companies who were active in this field in the 1950s and 1960s, together with some evocative period advertisements and catalogue illustrations. If you thought that a model car had to be made of diecast metal to be worth collecting, this book might change your mind . . . With 250 color photos, extensive appendices and identification aids this is a must have for any collector or dealer.

Book excerpt: The Buzz Number system, the famous identification system for U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force aircraft from late 1945 into the mid-1960s, was developed as a deterrent to 8th Air Force pilots engaged in unauthorized low-level flying over post-war Europe. This practice, called 'buzzing', prompted the need for ground observers to be able to identify and report a particular offending aircraft. In response to this need, a system of letters and numbers was developed to uniquely identify each aircraft in inventory. This book includes an in-depth explanation of the buzz number system as well as its many applications. This book is the ultimate buzz number reference for modelers and aviation enthusiasts.

Book Panzer Gunner

    Book Details:
  • Author : Bruno Friesen
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2019-06-15
  • ISBN : 9781912866045
  • Pages : 222 pages

Download or read book Panzer Gunner written by Bruno Friesen and published by . This book was released on 2019-06-15 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are few memoirs available of German Panzer crews that focus on the climactic last 12 months of the war on the Eastern Front, 1944-45. What makes Bruno Friesen's account virtually unique is his family background: his parents came from a German-speaking Mennonite community in Ukraine, and were to all intents and purposes culturally German. To make matters even more complex, in 1924 his parents left the Ukraine for Canada, where Bruno was born. In March 1939 he and his brother Oscar found themselves on a ship bound for Bremerhaven in Germany. He barely spoke German, and had never been to Germany, nevertheless his father envisaged that a better life awaited them in the Third Reich. Needless to say, Bruno became caught up in the Second World War, and in 1942 was drafted into the Wehrmacht. The author provides a full account of his family background, and how, through these unusual circumstances, he found himself a Canadian-born German soldier. The bulk of the book is a detailed account of the author's training, and his subsequent service with 25th Panzer Regiment, part of 7th Panzer Division. As the title suggests, Bruno Friesen served as a gunner aboard, initially, Panzer IVs, before crewing the lesser-known Jagdpanzer IV tank hunter. The author provides a fantastic amount of information about these two vehicles, and how the crews actually fought in battle with them. This kind of 'hands-on' detail has almost never been available before, particularly such extensive information concerning the characteristics and combat performance of the Jagdpanzer IV. Apart from providing a large fund of information about specific German tanks and their combat performance, the author writes in great detail about the combat the experienced on the Eastern Front, including tank battles in Rumania, spring 1944, Lithuania in the summer of 1944, and West Prussia during early 1945. If one wants to know how German tank crews fought the Soviets in the last year of the war, then this book provides an outstanding account, containing material simply not found elsewhere. The author closes his account by reflecting on his postwar efforts to return to Canada, which eventually succeeded in 1950, and his subsequent life there. This book is not just a critique of armored fighting vehicles and tank warfare, it is above all a very human story, told in a lively, conversational and fluid manner, and is a remarkable contribution to the literature of the Second World War.

Book Silver Arrows In Camera

Download or read book Silver Arrows In Camera written by Anthony Pritchard and published by Haynes Publishing UK. This book was released on 2008-12-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The battle in Grand Prix racing between the German Mercedes-Benz and Auto Union teams during the six years from 1934 through 1939 was probably the greatest, most spectacular and most important era in motor racing history. The two German teams almost completely dominated Grand Prix racing, mainly because of their technical superiority. This superiority was made possible by the vast sums that the two teams could expend on racing. The money paid to them by the German government was not a direct subsidy, but represented the generous margin above cost incorporated in government contracts. In effect, while Mercedes-Benz developed and manufactured aero engines for the Luftwaffe, the Auto Union Group manufactured tanks and other armored vehicles for the Wehrmacht.
