Book excerpt: While the story of the reintegration of professional football in 1946 after World War II is a topic that has been covered, there is a little-known aspect of this integration that has not been fully explored. After World War II and up until the mid- to late 1960s, professional football teams scheduled numerous preseason games in the South. Once African American players started dotting the rosters of these teams, they had to face Jim Crow conditions. Early on, black players were barred from playing in some cities. Most encountered segregated accommodations when they stayed in the South. And when African Americans in these southern cities came to see their favorite black players perform, they were relegated to segregated seating conditions. To add to the challenges these African American players and fans endured, professional football gradually started placing franchises in still-segregated cities as early as 1937, culminating with the new AFL placing franchises in Dallas and Houston in 1960. That same year, the NFL followed suit by placing a franchise in Dallas. Now, instead of just visiting a southern city for a day or so to play an exhibition game, African American players that were on the rosters of these southern teams had to live in these still segregated cities. Many of these players, being from the North or West Coast, had never dealt with de jure or even de facto Jim Crow laws. Early on, if these African American players didn’t “toe the line” or fought back (via contract disputes, interracial relationships, requesting better living accommodations in the South, protesting segregated seating, etc.), they were traded, cut, and even blackballed from the league. Eventually, though, as the civil rights movement gained steam in the 1950s and 1960s, African American players were able to protest the conditions in the South with success. Much of what happened in professional football during this time period coincided with or mirrored events in America and the civil rights movement.

It was originally conceived as a multi-purpose facility that would focus on baseball and served as the spring training home for the Philadelphia A's for two seasons, with many professional teams stopping in for exhibition games, including a rematch of the 1926 World Series between the Yankees and the Cardinals in 1927. As the largest established stadium in the state during those early years, Alabama and Auburn played more than 70 football games in the facility, treating fans to the likes of Paul "Bear" Bryant and Don Hudson. It was home to the first HBCU Classic, the Turkey Day Classic between Alabama State and Tuskegee, and the site of the first night football game in the South (as well as the first night college football game and the second pro baseball game under the lights in the South). For more than 60 years it was home to the Blue-Gray All Star Football Classic where stars such as Y.A. Tittle, Len Dawson, Fran Tarkenton, Howie Long and Jerry Rice roamed the sidelines of Cramton Bowl, but there were plenty of other activities in the stadium during that time, including 'Lucky' Teter's traveling daredevil show in 1934, the Negro League World Series, games involving the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League and Billy Graham's Greater Montgomery Crusade in 1965.

Even worse, in May, one of the league’s bigger-than-life personalities, Big Daddy Lipscomb, was found dead, with police saying he perished from a heroin overdose, something those who knew him best still dispute. As play began in September, the Pro Football Hall of Fame opened its doors in Canton, Ohio, the same town where the National Football League was founded in 1921 and inducted its first class. Also, the war for players and prestige raged with the upstart American Football League trying to obtain equal footing in the public eye. On the field, it was to be the year the Chicago Bears and their aging owner-coach George Halas knew glory once more, fighting off the latest dynasty Green Bay Packers led by Vince Lombardi in a season-long chase for the Western Division title. Yet even that was overshadowed by the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Clouds over the Goalpost is filled with controversy not only on the field, but off it as well. From the various suspensions to an exciting championship game between the Bears and Giants, 1963 was a year that the NFL would never forget—for both the good and the bad.
