Book Drilling Engineering Handbook

Download or read book Drilling Engineering Handbook written by E.H. Austin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the fundamental principles of drilling en gineering, with the primary objective of making a good well using data that can be properly evaluated through geology, reservoir engineering, and management. It is written to assist the geologist, drilling engineer, reservoir engineer, and manager in performing their assignments. The topics are introduced at a level that should give a good basic understanding of the subject and encourage further investigation of specialized interests. Many organizations have separate departments, each per forming certain functions that can be done by several methods. The reentering of old areas, as the industry is doing today, particularly emphasizes the necessity of good holes, logs, casing design, and cement job. Proper planning and coordination can eliminate many mistakes, and I hope the topics discussed in this book will playa small part in the drilling of better wells. This book was developed using notes, comments, and ideas from a course I teach called "Drilling Engineering with Offshore Considerations." Some "rules of thumb" equations are used throughout, which have proven to be helpful when applied in the ix x / Preface proper perspective. The topics are presented in the proper order for carrying through the drilling of a well.

Book Drilling Down

Download or read book Drilling Down written by Joseph A. Tainter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-09-18 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than a century, oil has been the engine of growth for a society that delivers an unprecedented standard of living to many. We now take for granted that economic growth is good, necessary, and even inevitable, but also feel a sense of unease about the simultaneous growth of complexity in the processes and institutions that generate and manage that growth. As societies grow more complex through the bounty of cheap energy, they also confront problems that seem to increase in number and severity. In this era of fossil fuels, cheap energy and increasing complexity have been in a mutually-reinforcing spiral. The more energy we have and the more problems our societies confront, the more we grow complex and require still more energy. How did our demand for energy, our technological prowess, the resulting need for complex problem solving, and the end of easy oil conspire to make the Deepwater Horizon oil spill increasingly likely, if not inevitable? This book explains the real causal factors leading up to the worst environmental catastrophe in U.S. history, a disaster from which it will take decades to recover.

Download or read book Directional Drilling written by Tom Inglis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some 35 years ago I was somewhat precariously balanced in a drilling derrick aligning a whipstock into a directional hole in North Holland by the Stokenbury method, and no doubt thinking to myself that I was at the very forefront of technology. During the intervening period it has become obvious to many of us that some of the most significant technical advances in the oil business have been made in drilling, and particularly in the fields of offshore and directional drilling. It has also become apparent that the quality of the technical literature describing these advances has not kept pace with that of the advances themselves in many instances. A particular glaring example of this has been in the field of directional drilling where a large literature gap has existed for many years. I am delighted to see this gap now filled with the present volume by my friend Tom Inglis. Indeed it is only after reading his comprehensive book that I realise the extent of my own ignorance of the latest techniques of directional drilling and how desirable it was to have an authoritative text on the subject. I feel sure that this volume will be welcomed by the industry and warmly recommend it to all who are in any way involved and interested in the fascinating world of drilling.

The book's chief objective is to provide the most information possible to all those who need a comprehensive understanding of the driller's aims and the resources he requires in producing and developing oil fields. It is particularly well-suited to the needs of the technical person whose field of activity is located upstream from oil and gas production, e.g. geologists, geophysicists, and reservoir and production facility engineers. It will also be of use to administrative personnel in oil companies, such as those in management, insurance and legal departments. The text is fully illustrated and consequently facilitates the reader's grasp of the basics of this highly technical profession.Contents: 1. Introduction. 2. Designing an oil well. 3. Downhole equipment. 4. The drilling rig. 5. Drilling fluids. 6. Wellheads. 7. Casing and cementing operations. 8. Measurements and drilling. 9. Principles of kick control. 10. Book A Practical Handbook for Drilling Fluids Processing

Download or read book A Practical Handbook for Drilling Fluids Processing written by Samuel Bridges and published by Gulf Professional Publishing. This book was released on 2020-02-18 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Practical Handbook for Drilling Fluids Processing delivers a much-needed reference for drilling fluid and mud engineers to safely understand how the drilling fluid processing operation affects the drilling process. Agitation and blending of new additions to the surface system are explained with each piece of drilled solids removal equipment discussed in detail. Several calculations of drilled solids, such as effect of retort volumes, are included, along with multiple field methods, such as determining the drilled solids density. Tank arrangements are covered as well as operating guidelines for the surface system. Rounding out with a solutions chapter with additional instruction and an appendix with equation derivations, this book gives today's drilling fluid engineers a tool to understand the technology available and step-by-step guidelines of how-to safety evaluate surface systems in the oil and gas fields.
