Download or read book Ghosts across Kentucky written by William Montell and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2010-09-12 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Lynwood Montell has collected ghost tales all over the state of Kentucky, from coal mining settlements to river landings, from highways to battlefields. He presents these suspense-filled stories just as he first heard or read them: as bona fide personal experiences or as events witnessed by family members or friends. There are over 250 stories in Ghosts across Kentucky that are set in specific places and times. They include tales of graveyards, haunted dormitories, animal ghosts, and vanishing hitchhikers. Montell describes weird lights, unexplained sounds, felt presences, and disappearing apparitions. Phantom workmen, fallen soldiers, young lovers, and executed criminals appear in these pages, along with the living who chance upon them. Though the focus is on the stories themselves, Montell also includes a chapter explaining our fascination with the supernatural and the deep truths these storytelling traditions reveal about our lives and our pasts.William Lynwood Montell, emeritus professor of folk studies at Western Kentucky University, is the author of several books, including Killings."

Book excerpt: On September 24, 1914 young Annie Martin, mother of two, was attacked and violently murdered while sleeping in her own bed. No one was ever caught or brought to justice, in this unsolved murder case, which haunted the town of Braggs, Oklahoma and the Martin family for decades. After years of research, author Shannon Rudy has unfurled the mystery surrounding her Grandmother's tragic end. This well written book is heavily documented with extensive original research including many newspaper articles, interviews, photographs and evidence of police cover-ups, yet it reads like a story that will engage readers' imaginations as well as their sympathies for a young woman doomed from childhood to a life of tragedy. Living in the heart of Cherokee Indian Territory during the tumultuous beginnings of the Twentieth Century, Annie is orphaned when her father is murdered and her mother swept away by a tornado. She is adopted by her uncle, only to be abused and then viscously murdered in her twenties by an assailant unnamed - until now. Bloody Handprints presents a classic cold case file as it puts the pieces together to solve the mystery and unravel the web of deceit, incompetence, incest, greed and desperation behind the untimely death of Annie Martin.

Book Analysing the Israel Effect in Canada

Download or read book Analysing the Israel Effect in Canada written by Peter Eglin and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-05-14 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the life of a Palestinian worth to intellectuals in Canadian universities and news media? Analyzing the Israel Effect documents and analyzes the discursive and organizational methods by which public criticism of Israel’s oppression of the Palestinians is silenced in Canada, as experienced through ten episodes in the life of the author over a thirty-year period from 1990-2020 in interaction with his university and local and national Canadian news media. As a sociological work the book is a critical autoethnography. But it is also an atrocity tale, a horror story of institutional self-censorship amounting to the abrogation of intellectual responsibility by those specifically charged with upholding it. In the end, the book is a crossover between academic treatise and journalistic exposé, “a historical narrative written by an academic from the standpoint of a political participant-observer” (Rajan Philips). The Israel Effect itself is analyzed as a three-tier propaganda industry. Hasbara is produced in Israel (Tier 1), disseminated to Israel Lobby groups around the world (Tier 2) and independently re-produced, actively and passively, by the “intellectual” institutions – universities and news media (Tier 3). This book is about the non-Jewish, non-Zionist institutions of Tier 3, the onlookers to war crimes, ethnic cleansing and, arguably, genocide, as in Gaza in October-November 2023. This work stands as a compelling testament to the importance of preserving freedom of expression, and the vital role intellectuals play in challenging injustice and promoting transparency. It is ideal for scholars, activists, and anyone seeking to understand the complexities of political activism and the power dynamics behind public discourse.

Book It Was Vulgar and It Was Beautiful

Download or read book It Was Vulgar and It Was Beautiful written by Jack Lowery and published by Bold Type Books. This book was released on 2022-04-05 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the J. Anthony Lukas Prize The story of art collective Gran Fury—which fought back during the AIDS crisis through direct action and community-made propaganda—offers lessons in love and grief. In the late 1980s, the AIDS pandemic was annihilating queer people, intravenous drug users, and communities of color in America, and disinformation about the disease ran rampant. Out of the activist group ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power), an art collective that called itself Gran Fury formed to campaign against corporate greed, government inaction, stigma, and public indifference to the epidemic. Writer Jack Lowery examines Gran Fury’s art and activism from iconic images like the “Kissing Doesn’t Kill” poster to the act of dropping piles of fake bills onto the trading floor of the New York Stock Exchange. Lowery offers a complex, moving portrait of a collective and its members, who built essential solidarities with each other and whose lives evidenced the profound trauma of enduring the AIDS crisis. Gran Fury and ACT UP’s strategies are still used frequently by the activists leading contemporary movements. In an era when structural violence and the devastation of COVID-19 continue to target the most vulnerable, this belief in the power of public art and action persists.

  • ISBN : 1304119882
  • Pages : 402 pages

Download or read book Seventeen Cities written by Scott Stambach and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-06-09 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seventeen Cities is a collection of seventeen short stories, each set in a different city of the world, all connected through seeds of the other stories. The book begins in Minsk, Belarus with a letter written by a profoundly deformed teenage boy living in a hospital designated for survivors of the Chernobyl disaster as he copes with the death of the only person he ever loved. From there, the reader is taken into the home of a Manhattan stockbroker who unravels shortly after finding his name in the New York Times obituaries while eating breakfast. Next, to Rio where a mysterious man stumbles onto a hotel that contains all of time. Seventeen Cities is a visceral book that mixes, twists, and bends genres. Each story is told in a different voice, some reminiscent of Latin magical realism, occasionally playing off of Kafka, others experiment with traditional literary fiction. Just as varied as its genres, are its themes, which include the nature of time and love, religion, coincidence, and transcending loss.
