But his return to Louisiana almost three centuries later fills him with hope once more after he tastes his truelove’s blood in another. Salena Saunders has always disregarded New Orleans’ plethora of paranormal legends until her lineage begins to haunt her. After a brazen encounter with a handsome stranger inside a phone booth, he begins stalking her under the veil of night like a carnal predator. He promises her no harm, yet he dominates her body at will, leaving her helpless to resist his mysterious voodoo. After learning about local women who were found exsanguinated with bite marks similar to the ones blemishing her alabaster skin, Salena’s fantasy turns into a nightmare. She suddenly realizes her alluring lover is a monster she has never believed in, but now she must. Desperate for answers, Salena visits the French Quarter to consult a Voodoo priestess and a Gypsy fortuneteller. Both point the frightened woman to her ancestry to solve the enigma enveloping her. Devin will let no mortal or immortal stop him from convincing Salena of their intertwined destinies. He will destroy the entities trying to shield her from him as well as the one who desires her blood and the vengeance it would deliver—his sadistic long-lost brother, Gabriel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word “blood” awakens ancient ideas, but we know little about its historical representation in Western cultures. Anthropologists have customarily studied how societies think about the bodily substances that unite them, and the contributors to this volume develop those questions in new directions. Taking a radically historical perspective that complements traditional cultural analyses, they demonstrate how blood and kinship have constantly been reconfigured in European culture. This volume challenges the idea that blood can be understood as a stable entity, and shows how concepts of blood and kinship moved in both parallel and divergent directions over the course of European history.

Book One People One Blood

Download or read book One People One Blood written by Don Seeman and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2009-08-11 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Little by little, an egg will come to walk upon its own leg." Ethiopian-Israelis fondly quote this bit of Amharic folk wisdom, reflecting upon the slow, difficult history that allowed them to fulfill their destiny far from the Horn of Africa where they were born. But today, along with those Ethiopians who have been recognized as Jews by the State of Israel, many who are called "Feres Mura," the descendants of Ethiopian Jews whose families converted to Christianity but have now reasserted their Jewish identity, still await full acceptance in Israel. Since the 1990s, they have sought homecoming through Israel's "Law of Return," but have been met with reticence and suspicion on a variety of fronts. One People, One Blood expertly documents this tenuous relationship and the challenges facing the Feres Mura. Distilling more than ten years of ethnographic research, Don Seeman depicts the rich culture of the group, as well as their social and cultural vulnerability, and addresses the problems that arise when immigration officials, religious leaders, or academic scholars try to determine the legitimacy of Jewish identity or Jewish religious experience.

Book Cultural Encyclopedia of the Body 2 volumes

Download or read book Cultural Encyclopedia of the Body 2 volumes written by Victoria Pitts-Taylor and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2008-09-30 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pop culture and the media today are saturated with the focus on the aesthetics of the human body. Magazines and infotainment shows speculate whether this or that actress had breast implants or a nose job. Americans are not just focusing on celebrities but on themselves too and today have unprecedented opportunities to rework what nature gave them. One can now drop in to have cosmetic surgery at the local mall. Contemplating the superficial nature of it all grows tiresome, and pop culture vultures and students can get a better fix for their fascination with the body beautiful through the cultural insight provided in this amazing set. Cultural Encyclopedia of the Body is a treasure trove of essays that explore the human body alphabetically by part, detailing practices and beliefs from the past and present and from around the world that are sometimes mind-blowing and eye-popping. Body parts are examined through a multifaceted cultural lens. Readers will explore how the parts are understood, what they mean to disparate societies, how they are managed, treated, and transformed, and how they are depicted and represented. The entries draw from many disciplines that are concerned to some degree or another with human bodies, including anthropology archeology, sociology, religion, political history, philosophy, art history, literary studies, and medicine. The encyclopedia proffers information on a number of cultures, tribes, and customs from East and West. Ancient practices to the latest fad, which in fact might continue ancient practices, are illuminated. Other considerations that arise in the essays include comparisons among cultures, the changing perceptions of the body, and issues of race, gender, religion, community and belonging, ethnicity, power structures, human rights.

Book Christian Kinship

    Book Details:
  • Author : David A. Torrance
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2022-09-22
  • ISBN : 0567699811
  • Pages : 217 pages

Download or read book Christian Kinship written by David A. Torrance and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-09-22 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ideas of kinship play a significant role in structuring everyday life, and yet kinship has been neglected in Christian ethics, moral philosophy and bioethics. Attention has been paid in these disciplines to the ethics of 'family,' but with little regard to the evidence that kinship varies widely from culture-to-culture, suggesting that it is, in fact, culturally constructed. Surveying notions of shared substance (e.g. blood ties), house, gender and personhood, as theorised and practiced in the Christian tradition, Torrance critiques the special privileging of the 'blood tie'. In the place of European and American cultural assumptions to the contrary, it is kinship in Christ that is presented as the basis of a truly Christian account for social ties. Torrance also aims to stimulate the moral imagination to consider Christian kinship might be lived out in miniature, in everyday life.
