A many-decade long war, with a race of people known as Krakons, from across the ocean, has defeated the original races and taken over the lands of Mataan. The human race has been assimilated into Krakon society as a slave class, a few scattered to wild lands in the northwest, now called the Outlaw Kingdom. But there has been a foretelling of a Ravenlock, the old rulers of the dark Wars era, that would rise up once more, unite the races, and renew the war with the Krakons. A Renewing of the first formal Joining, the true sign of this prophecy. This is the story of one of Raklor Ravenlock’s scion, hundreds of years after the Dark Wars, found deep in the mountains of the Outlaw Kingdom – a short and somewhat concise telling of the events, occurrences, and happenings of his formative years. His journey to this fabled renewing.

Book excerpt: WESSEX 893 ADAs the threat of yet another Viking invasion looms over his troubled realm, Alfred, King of Wessex, reviews and strengthens his defences.Among his many concerns is the fate of Edward, his stable boy, who he believes to be the bastard son of revered warrior Matthew, who died serving the Saxon cause. If his heritage can be proved, Edward is not only heir to vast fortune but, more importantly, he has the blood of a warrior in his veins - something the Saxons are likely to need in spades.More worryingly, Alfred fears that if Edward's true lineage ever became known, there would be those who might seek to exploit him or, worse still, use him to usurp Alfred's rule. He confides in just two of his closest advisers and they conspire to send Edward to the relative safety of Wareham on the pretext of having him train Governor Osric's magnificent black stallion, a horse thought to be all but unrideable.Edward is treated with disdain when he reaches Wareham and regarded as being too puny to be a warrior. However when the barely-trained members of the fyrd find themselves outnumbered, isolated and confronting a dreaded Viking warband, it is Edward's quick thinking and extraordinary courage that leads them to victory, leaving no doubt about his true bloodline.

  • Author : Emily Weissbourd

Download or read book Bad Blood written by Emily Weissbourd and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2023-06-20 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bad Blood explores representations of race in early modern English and Spanish literature, especially drama. It addresses two different forms of racial ideology: one concerned with racialized religious difference--that is, the notion of having Jewish or Muslim "blood"--and one concerned with Blackness and whiteness. Shakespeare's Othello tells us that he was "sold to slavery" in his youth, a phrase that evokes the Atlantic triangle trade for readers today. For many years, however, scholars have asserted that racialized slavery was not yet widely understood in early modern England, and that the kind of enslavement that Othello describes is related to Christian-Muslim conflict in the Mediterranean rather than the rise of the racialized enslavement of Afro-diasporic subjects. Bad Blood offers a new account of early modern race by tracing the development of European racial vocabularies from Spain to England. Dispelling assumptions, stemming from Spain's historical exclusion of Jews and Muslims, that premodern racial ideology focused on religious difference and purity of blood more than color, Emily Weissbourd argues that the context of the Atlantic slave trade is indispensable to understanding race in early modern Spanish and English literature alike. Through readings of plays by Shakespeare, Lope de Vega, and their contemporaries, as well as Spanish picaresque fiction and its English translations, Weissbourd reveals how ideologies of racialized slavery as well as religious difference come to England via Spain, and how both notions of race operate in conjunction to shore up fantasies of Blackness, whiteness, and "pure blood." The enslavement of Black Africans, Weissbourd shows, is inextricable from the staging of race in early modern literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the distinction between domestic and international is increasingly blurred along with the line between internal and external borders, migrants—particularly people of color—have become emblematic of the hybrid threat both to national security and sovereignty and to safety and order inside the state. From building walls and fences, overcrowding detention facilities, and beefing up border policing and border controls, a new narrative has arrived that has migrants assume the risk for government-sponsored degradation, misery, and death. Crimmigrant Nations examines the parallel rise of anti-immigrant sentiment and right-wing populism in both the United States and Europe to offer an unprecedented look at this issue on an international level. Beginning with the fears and concerns of immigration that predate the election of Trump, the Brexit vote, and the signing and implementation of the Schengen Agreement, Crimmigrant Nations critically analyzes nationalist state policies in countries that have criminalized migrants and categorized them as threats to national security. Highlighting a pressing and perplexing problem facing the Western world in 2020 and beyond, this collection of essays illustrates not only how anti-immigrant sentiments and nationalist discourse are on the rise in various Western liberal democracies, but also how these sentiments are being translated into punitive and cruel policies and practices that contribute to a merger of crime control and migration control with devastating effects for those falling under its reach. Mapping out how these measures are taken, the rationale behind these policies, and who is subjected to exclusion as a result of these measures, Crimmigrant Nations looks beyond the level of the local or the national to the relational dynamics between different actors on different levels and among different institutions.

Book excerpt: Vampires exist. Michael knows this because one attacked him when he was twenty-one years old. What Michael doesn't know is who she was, how it happened, or why she did what she did. What little he does know about being a vampire, he learned the hard way. The self-taught way. He's also alone. Michael knows THAT better than anything else. In fact, he's become quite adept at being isolated, because he's never met or even sensed another being like himself-another vampire. Not once, not ever. What Michael doesn't know is that a chance encounter will drag him out of exile and thrust him into an adventure stranger than anything he could possibly imagine. He won't be ready for most of it, either, because not even an immortal creature of the night could predict what comes next. Not even close. And we haven't even mentioned the dragon yet...
