In the year 2038, vampires might have civil rights, but that doesn't mean the population treats them with civility. Master Vampire Marcus Verano wants to put an end to the violence, but the charter they signed states that no human must be harmed in any confrontation. To that end, the Vigilance group is formed to patrol the streets of downtown Los Angeles and take care of trouble from roving street gangs before it escalates. Ross Delaney, owner of popular downtown bar The Bitter Brew, comes to the aid of vampire Tristan Munro when he is attacked. Ross is intrigued by the vampire and asks him to return the following night—which he does...and many nights thereafter. As a Vigilance member, Tristan is partnered with Leah, a fiery red-haired female who resents being subjugated by humans—and male vampires. It isn't long before she rebels against the Vigilance and seeks vengeance on humans, holding Ross hostage and defying Marcus and Tristan. Can she be stopped, or will her actions destroy the Vigilance...and the growing relationship between Ross and Tristan? Reader advisory: This book contains scenes of violence and death.

Download or read book The Price of Vigilance written by Larry Tart and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2001-06-01 with total page 599 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent forced landing of a U.S. Navy EP-3 surveillance aircraft on Hainan Island after aerial harassment by Chinese fighters underscores that the dangers of the Cold War are not behind us. Reconnaissance-intelligence gathering-has always been one of the most highly secretive operations in the military. Men risk their lives with no recognition for themselves, flying missions that were almost always unarmed and typically pose as weather survey or training flights. Now the true stories of these brave young men can at last be told. Larry Tart and Robert Keefe, former USAF airborne recon men themselves, provide a gripping, unprecedented history of American surveillance planes shot down by China and Russia-from the opening salvoes of the Cold War to the most recent international standoff with China. Appearing here for the first time are many crucial documents, ranging from formerly highly classified U.S. files to conversations with Khrushchev and top secret reports from the Russian presidential archives. Along with previously unreleased military details, this meticulously researched book includes MiG fighter pilot transcripts and interviews with participants from both sides-including survivors of downed American planes. From the Baltic to the Bering Seas, from Armenia and Azerbaijan to China, Korea, and the Sea of Japan, these gripping accounts reveal the drama of what really happened to Americans shot down in hostile skies. The Price of Vigilance brings to life the harrowing ordeals faced by the steel-nerved crews, the diplomatic furor that erupts after shootdowns, and the grief and frustration of the families waiting at home-families who, most often, were never told what their loved ones were doing. Armed with the results of recent crash-site excavations, advanced DNA testing, and the reports of local witnesses who can finally reveal what they saw, Tart and Keefe have written a real-life thriller of the deadly cat-and-mouse game of intelligence gathering in the air and across enemy borders. The centerpiece of the book is the fate of USAF C-130 60528 and its crew of seventeen, shot down over Armenia on September 2, 1958, with no known survivors. Tart and Keefe also vividly describe other shootdowns, including the tense stand off between the U.S. and China after an American reconnaissance aircraft was forced to land on Hainan Island in April 2001. The Price of Vigilance pays moving tribute to the courage and patriotism of all the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy crews, including those captured and the more than two hundred who never returned. Larry Tart and Robert Keefe wish to publicly acknowledge to the families, and to the nation, that we will never forget their sacrifice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three major features set French transfusion medicine apart from other international models: in France, blood donation is underpinning by four founding principles : it is anonymous, voluntary, non-remunerated and not-for-profit. “Ethical blood donation” is the foundation of the French model; - this model is led by a single government agnecy, the EFS, which has a monopoly over the distribution of labile blood products to ensure constant availability across the country; - delivery is inseparable from immunohaematology (the EFS is the largest medical testing laboratory in France) and transfusion support, which is also provided by the EFS, to guide the prescriber towards the “right prescription” (the right product for the right patient). Through the EFS, the French State is therefore responsible for selfsufficiency, health safety and the efficient management of the rare and precious commodity that is human blood. The French model is one of the few to provide both “ethical blood donation” and internationally recognized efficiency.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neuroergonomics can be defined as the study of brain and behavior at work. It combines two disciplines--neuroscience, the study of brain function, and human factors, the study of how to match technology with the capabilities and limitations of people so they can work effectively and safely. The goal of merging these two fields is to use the startling discoveries of human brain and physiological functioning both to inform the design of technologies in the workplace and home, and to provide new training methods that enhance performance, expand capabilities, and opitimize the fit between people and technology. Research in the area of neuroergonomics has blossomed in recent years with the emergence of noninvasive techniques for monitoring human brain function that cna be used to study various aspects of human behavior in relation to technology and work, including mental workload, visual attention, working memory, motor control, human-automation interaction, and adaptive automation. This volume will provide the first systematic overview of this emerging area, describing the theoretical background, basic research, major methods, as well as the new and future areas of application. This collection will benefit a number of readers: the experienced researcher investigating related questions in human factors and cognitive neuroscience, the student wishing to get a rapid but systematic overview of the field, and the designer interested in novel approaches and new ideas for application. Researchers in human factors and ergonomics, neuroscience, cognitive psychology, medicine, industrial engineering, and computer science will find this volume most helpful.
