Book excerpt: A long list of canonical writers in Western literature have experienced incarceration and have subsequently written celebrated works about the imprisoned and the condemned. The French tradition is no exception: writers who produced noteworthy texts while incarcerated or who later wrote about their experiences in prison are found on the literary-historical landscape from the medieval era through the twentieth century. Prison writing by inmates, former guards, chaplains, teachers, and doctors is firmly established as part of the fabric of popular culture and has long attracted the attention of culture critics and scholars. Nevertheless, scant analysis exists of the prison novel a literary genre that, as Andrew Sobanet argues in Jail Sentences, uses fiction as a documentary tool. Its narrative peculiarities, which are the main subjects of Sobanet s study, include the use of autobiographical and testimonial techniques to critique the penitentiary system. Jail Sentences is the definitive study of the legacy of the Western tradition of prison writing in twentieth-century French literature. Although Sobanet focuses primarily on French writers Victor Serge, Jean Genet, Albertine Sarrazin, and François Bon his keen sense of literary dialogue pulls into the orbit of his study an international corpus of work, from Dostoyevsky to Malcolm X. Jail Sentences arrives at a coherent definition of the genre, whose unique conventions stem from the innermost regions of our understanding of stories, truth, fiction, and belief.

Book excerpt: Every day, citizens of the United States and Canada see television dramas and movies about criminals and prisons, but the real world of incarceration remains hidden from most people's experience. This book explores the realities of overcrowding, disease, violence, and abuse in penal institutions. It considers multiple perspectives: that of social scientists, victims, prison workers, and the prisoners themselves. This look behind the bars of North America's incarceration facilities is often disturbing, yet it is well documented and thought provoking. Prison Conditions shows the tough realities, offering a well-balanced perspective on some of the most vital issues confronting society today.

Book Blood Guts and Gore

Download or read book Blood Guts and Gore written by Gareth Glover and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2022-10-07 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Gordon Smith wrote one of the most vivid, honest and readable personal accounts of the Battle of Waterloo and the ensuing campaign, where he served as a surgeon in the12th Light Dragoons, but his classic narrative was only published in a limited edition in the 1830s and since then it has been virtually unknown. His warts-and-all depiction of the British army in Belgium and France and the fighting at Waterloo rivals many of the more famous and often reprinted military memoirs of the period. That is why Gareth Glover, one of the foremost experts on the battle and the archive sources relating to it, has sought to republish the narrative now, with a full introduction and explanatory notes. Smith’s account reads like a novel, in a chatty, easy-going style, but it often records deeply shocking scenes and behaviour so scandalous that he had to avoid naming names. As well as recalling, in graphic detail, his experience as a medic during the battle, he records the aftermath, the allied occupation of France. His writing, which describes the truly dreadful consequences of the fighting as only a surgeon would see them, also gives the reader a rare insight into his role and a memorable impression of the life in the army as a whole.

No one knows the system better than Charlie. Now, for the very first time, you can find out what it is really like inside a maximum security institution as Charlie blows the lid on his life in HM Wakefield. Written in diary form by Charlie himself from behind locked doors, this unique book uncovers the real Charlie; his thoughts, frustrations and true feelings about the people who inhabit ‘the concrete coffin’ with him. This raw, unedited text, in his own hand, comes straight from the heart and also reveals another side to the man who has spent much of his time in solitary confinement in inhuman conditions. From writing poetry and creating works of art, to keeping fit and his secret passion for the X Factor and Coronation Street, there is much more to the man dubbed ‘Britain’s most violent prisoner’ than his reputation suggests. Charlie says that he never plans his actions and only reacts violently when provoked and he has received more than his fair share of provocation over the years. This hard hitting book tells you how it is by the man who knows. Following on from his earlier works Loonyology and Respect and Reputation, and Bronson the film about his life, Prison Diaries continues the unbelievable Charles Bronson story. As Charlie says, ‘After reading this book you will know what its like to be me’.

Constantly stalked by danger he has to find a way to survive. To earn protection money he turns to the one thing he's good at—art. But can selling pictures to visitors be enough to keep the mob at bay? Or will he be made an example of by the hard men and suffer the worst type of prison punishment? Based on the experiences of the author. ABOUT JOHN HOSKISON: In 1994, bestselling author John Hoskison broke a lifetime rule by drinking and driving and on his way home, he hit and killed a cyclist. As a non-violent first offender, he was told he would serve part of his sentence in an open prison, but was instead consigned to some of the toughest in Britain. John was only able to survive his time in prison through the incredible forgiveness he received from the woman whom he'd made a widow and by the support of friends and family who knew his actions were so out of character. Now John spends time speaking to young people at schools and through community out-reach programs, warning them about taking unnecessary risks and what prison is really like. If anyone is under the illusion that prison is a holiday camp, and that breaking the law just once is worth the risk, read this book.
