Download or read book Blind People written by Shlomo Deshen and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blind People approaches disability from a fresh perspective: people with an unusual body are conceived of relativistically as a variant of humanity, much the way anthropology approaches people of different culture. While deeply empathic to its subject matter, Blind People raises questions that anthropologists ask routinely, but which are commonly avoided in everyday life because they touch on sensitive matters. Based on fieldwork in Israel, the book constitutes an ethnography of blind Israelis. It starts by focusing on intimate issues of the management of the sightless body, goes on to discuss the role of the blind person in the domestic setting, and moves to issues of how the blind person strives to attain material requirements. Finally, the book relates the way blind people cope with problems of associating with both blind and sighted people in arenas of leisure activity and public affairs. Deshen's book aims to present a truthful, dignified, fully human depiction, in the tradition of socio-cultural anthropology.

  • Pages : 217 pages

Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to understand the experiences of persons who are visually impaired, including those who are invisibly visually impaired. Through the use of a survey questionnaire and interviews and employing a cross-sectional survey design, the study examines the experiences of a large number of visually impaired respondents. The research largely examines how visual impairment affects the performance of the visually impaired "actor" in relationships and social interaction. To perform successfully, the visually impaired actor must be able to adapt to and perform competently within his or her assigned role, establish and maintain mutually satisfying relationships with other social actors, and know how to prepare for and manage the potential responses of the audience. The author employs a social performance perspective to examine how a visual impairment affects the individual's self-concept, ability to initiate and maintain satisfying relationships, and interact successfully, The appendix contains a wealth of supplementary information, including the actual survey instrument and its rationale, the theoretical model guiding the survey research, the interview procedures and protocol, and the correlation matrix. This unique text will be a valuable resource to visually impaired individuals, their families, and professionals who work with them. It also will serve as a useful text in graduate and undergraduate courses in disability issues.

Download or read book Love s Not Color Blind written by Kevin A. Patterson and published by Thorntree Press LLC. This book was released on 2018-03-30 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The issues that make monogamous dating daunting for people of color—shaming and exclusion by white partners, being fetishized, having realities of everyday racism ignored—occur in polyamorous relationships too, and trying "not to see race" only makes it worse. To make polyamorous communities inclusive, we must all acknowledge our part in perpetuating racism and listen to people of color. Love's Not Color Blind puts forward the framework—through research, anecdotal testimony, and analogy—for understanding, identifying, and confronting racism within polyamorous communities.
