Book Blessings and Hugs from the Sisters

Download or read book Blessings and Hugs from the Sisters written by Pansy F. Dodson and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2013-04 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My book came into being quite by accident. My sister, Madeline F. Sparrow, needed some cards to send to her shut-ins. She had over eighty at the time. She had used all that she could find. I said, “Why don’t I try to write a note of cheer?” I always thought about writing short stories. So I started writing verses. Each month, I would sit on my porch or at the kitchen window and think about God and how I felt on the day. I always looked at nature, the birds, squirrels, deer, etc. I wrote how I felt about the changes of the weather and the seasons. Many of those who received these verses responded with notes of thanks for lifting their day. Others were placed on the doors of nursing homes. Several suggested we have them printed into a book.

Book Beyond Awkward Side Hugs

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It Doesn’t Have to Be This Weird When it comes to relationships between men and women, we have more questions than answers: How do we keep relationships with the opposite sex healthy—and still hug each other after small group? Is it possible for married men and women to be friends with people of the opposite sex? What does it mean to be a woman if you’re not a wife, or a man if you’re not a husband? Jesus’ pattern for church living was one of family—of brothers and sisters living in intimate, life-giving community with each other. With story, sensitivity, and hope, Beyond Awkward Side Hugs invites us to leave behind eroticized, fear-based patterns and move toward gendered, generous relationships between men and women of character as we love one another as Jesus did. “Beyond Awkward Side Hugs is a deep well of biblical wisdom, and Lea has written with nuance and clarity, humor and grace.” —Jen Pollock Michel, author of Surprised by Paradox and Keeping Place “The church desperately needs a bigger vision for how men and women can flourish together in ministry and friendship, and Bronwyn Lea paints a vivid picture for how we’ll get there.” —Steve Wiens, author of Shining Like the Sun, Beginnings, and Whole

Download or read book Blessed written by Joan O'Brien and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-11-21 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From boarding out with families to boarding schools, Joan Sprague knew no father, hardly knew a mother, but felt loved wherever she lived. She had dreams like any young girl and, like any teenager, longed for the love of a handsome young man. Whether near the ocean or in the mountains, near the jungle or in the cities, her experience of people was enlightening, inspirational, and at times, disappointing. As Joan searched for God's plan for her life, she tolerated physical pain, bore emotional suffering, accepted disappointment, assumed obligations, discovered love. Family and friends, both near and far, remained her stable go-to. Each time she came to a fork in the road of her life, her staple remained love--love of God-Jesus, love of family, love of friends. She felt so blessed that she had so very much, even amid pain, indecision, and sorrow. Joan was a pretty teenager with beautiful auburn hair. As she grew into womanhood, she was very attractive but didn't know it (she had to be told.) She loved movies, the beach, baseball. She especially loved music, dancing, singing, and performing. As a devout Catholic, she was edified by the nuns and priests who taught her. After one year in college, she took, as she believed was God's plan for her, the road less traveled nowadays and entered the sisterhood. From Boston to Brazil, she loved her teaching profession and her students of different ages and various cultures... Then she met Padre Xavier, man of God, a man of the cloth. What lay ahead for this young woman who had vowed her life to God? She still felt God's spirit awakening her, pushing her, breathing his life into her soul, yet what was his message now? Could she go on this way, having these feelings each time Xavier was in the room? Prayer, yes, of course. The will of God became her mantra, but could she discern what it was? Eventually, she did.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Misty Griffin's story ─ Surviving child abuse, parental betrayal, sexual assault, and Amish cruelty A true crime memoir: When Misty was six years old her family started to live and dress like the Amish. Misty and her sister were kept as slaves on a mountain ranch where they were subjected to almost complete isolation, sexual abuse and extreme physical violence. Their step-father kept a loaded rifle by the door at all times to make sure the young girls were too terrified to try to escape. They also knew that no rescue would ever come because only a couple of people even knew they existed and did not know them well enough to care. Amish Sexual abuse: When Misty reached her teens, her parents feared she and her sister would escape and took them to an Amish community where they were adopted and became baptized members. Misty was devastated to once again find herself in a world of fear, animal cruelty and sexual abuse. Going to the police was severely frowned upon. A few years later, Misty was sexually assaulted by the bishop. As Misty recalls, "Amish sexual abusers are only shunned by the church for six weeks, a punishment that never seems to work. After I was assaulted by the bishop I knew I had to get help and one freezing morning in early March I made a dash for a tiny police station in rural Minnesota. After reporting the bishop I left the Amish and found myself plummeted into the strange modern world with only a second-grade education and no ID or social security card. To all abuse survivors out there, please be encouraged, the cycle of abuse can be broken. Today, I am a nursing student working towards my master's degree and a child abuse awareness activist. This is my story." If you have read Scared Selfless, A Child Called It, The Sound of Gravel, or Etched In Sand, then Tears of the Silenced is a must read.
