Book excerpt: Mama of ten Abbie Halberstadt helps women humbly and gracefully rise to the high calling of motherhood without settling for mediocrity or losing their minds in the process. Motherhood is a challenge. Unfortunately, our worldly culture offers moms little in the way of real help. Mamas only connect to celebrate surviving another day and to share in their misery rather than rejoice in what God has done and to build each other up in hard times. There has a be a better way, a biblical way, for mamas to grow and thrive. As a daughter of Christ, you have been called to be more than an average mama. Attaining excellence doesn’t have to be unsettling but it will take committed focus and a desire to parent well according to God’s grace and for His glory. M is for Mama offers advice, encouragement, and scripturally sound strategies seasoned with a little bit of humor to help you embrace the challenge of biblical motherhood and raise your children with love and wisdom. Mama, you are worthy of the awesome responsibility God has given you. Now it’s time to start believing you can live up to it.

Download or read book A BLESSED LIFE Updated written by Linda Anne Monica Schneider and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2024-05-07 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For once, Linda Anne Monica Schneider now is writing strictly about what she does know: her life and its circumstances. She tells the story of what it has been like for a middle-class American descended from Italian and German immigrants. It is the story of a girl who grew up and found her law vocation during the 50’s through 70’s and who happens to be blind and hard of hearing. During her life, she has used a series of wonderful guide dogs as traveling companions. Like the two discouraged, disillusioned pilgrims who fled from Jerusalem after the death and still disbelieved resurrection of Jesus, she is still in the lifelong process of finding the Lord. This book updates and supersedes the earlier version published in 2012 under a slightly different title.

Her father and both grandfathers were architects, and built homes and buildings from Oklahoma to Martha ́s Vineyard in the early 1900 ́s. Before she became four years old, Mary Jeanette ́s father abandoned her and his marriage, leaving the child to question her birth and family history. Thus began a lifetime search for her heritage and a home of her own. The book captures the hearts and struggles of Mary Jeanette and her mother as they moved from place to place across Oklahoma and Kansas to live with relatives. After her high-school graduation, she met a young man who brought deep love and a devotion that led to marriage. The lives of these two characters as children mirrored each other, and they found that they had much in common, including the kind of home they wanted. The stories of their life as a couple bring them some exciting experiences during the Great Depression, the Dust-Bowl Days, through WWII, and to the promise of a bright future.

Download or read book Peasants on the Edge written by William P. Mitchell and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-07-05 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout Latin America and the rest of the Third World, profound social problems are growing in response to burgeoning populations and unstable economic and political systems. In Peru, terrorist acts by the Shining Path guerilla movement are the most visible manifestation of social discontent, but rapid economic and religious changes have touched the lives of almost everyone, radically altering traditional lifeways. In this twenty-year study of the community of Quinua in the Department of Ayacucho, William Mitchell looks at changes provoked by population growth within a severely limited ecological and economic setting, including increasing conversion to a cash economy and out-migration, the decline of the Catholic fiesta system and the rise of Protestantism, and growing poverty and revolution. When Mitchell first began his field studies in Quinua in 1966, farming was still the Quinueños' principal means of livelihood. But while the population was increasing rapidly, the amount of arable land in the community remained the same, creating increased food shortfalls. At the same time, government controls on food prices and subsidies of cheap food imports drove down the value of rural farm production. These ecological and economic factors forced many people to enter the nonfarm economy to feed themselves. Using a materialist approach, Mitchell charts the new economic strategies that Quinueños use to confront the harsh pressures of their lives, including ceramic production, wage labor, petty commerce, and migration to cash work on the coat and in the eastern tropical forests. In addition, he shows how the growing conversion from Catholicism to Protestantism is also an economic strategy, since Protestant ideology offers acceptable reasons for redirecting the money that used to be spent on elaborate religious festivals to household needs and education. The twenty-year span of this study makes it especially valuable for students of social change. Mitchell's unique, interdisciplinary approach, considering ecological, economic, and population factors simultaneously, offers a model that can be widely applied in many Third World areas. Additionally, the inclusion of an entire chapter of family histories reveals how economic and ecological forces are played out at the individual level.
