Book excerpt: Imagine an epidemic that kills over one hundred Americans every day. Now stop imagining. Each year doctors and nurses kill nearly one hundred thousand Americans. By mistake. They operate on the wrong patients, prescribe the wrong drugs, and leave instruments inside body cavities after surgery. Meanwhile, hospitals spend billions on new gadgets, marble lobbies, and slick billboards even as safety continues to be ignored. Until now. Internal Bleeding exposes the dark secrets behind the glistening facade of modern medicine. Doctors Robert Wachter and Kaveh Shojania, professors at one of America's leading medical schools and two of the world's foremost authorities on medical mistakes, shatter the silence to tell the dramatic and compelling stories of real patients betrayed by a system they trusted to save them. Through these stories, the authors reveal the inner workings, gut-wrenching dilemmas, and heartbreaking tragedies of our overburdened, understaffed health care system. Internal Bleeding provides an insider's view of how professional caregivers think, feel, and operate-facts that every patient and family must know to avoid becoming just another "mistake." In the groundbreaking tradition of Fast Food Nation , Internal Bleeding paints a vivid and unforgettable picture of a system gone terribly wrong, and what doctors, nurses, hospital CEOs, and policy makers must do to make it right.

Book excerpt: From the introduction: Given these words of Hemingway, we sit at our keyboard before a blank screen expecting to hemorrhage some profound truth. But nothing comes and we are vastly disappointed or frustrated at our inability to write a single word or phrase. We hear the clock ticking or our phone vibrate and we curse Hemingway for his deceit. We are done. But we are not done with the staccato rhythm of Hemingway, "The cold rain kept on and killed the spring." We read the harsh tone of Hawthorne's prose, "What other dungeon is so dark as one's own heart." We ponder the mood of terror painted by Poe, ." . . Falling, it was rain, but having fallen, it was blood." Like Thoreau, we find that, "Truth and roses have thorns about them." We are in the throes of discovering how great authors skillfully draw blood and the reader into their world. Writing is not opening a wound, the blood gushing and splattering randomly. There is something more to it. Rather writing is a bloodletting, a slow and visceral dripping. It is a careful crafting of words, drawing the reader in to reveal an artery of simple truths. With new understanding, we sit and write our own truth with carefully chosen words we bleed on paper. Our simple truth is what you will discover through our stories; truths that we have discovered about ourselves, and the world around us. For here on these pages, we have opened our veins and skillfully let the droplets of blood flow from our hearts. We are Bleeding Truth.

Book Honest Signals

  • Author : Alex Pentland
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 2010-09-24
  • ISBN : 0262261049
  • Pages : 205 pages

Download or read book Honest Signals written by Alex Pentland and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2010-09-24 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How understanding the signaling within social networks can change the way we make decisions, work with others, and manage organizations. How can you know when someone is bluffing? Paying attention? Genuinely interested? The answer, writes Alex Pentland in Honest Signals, is that subtle patterns in how we interact with other people reveal our attitudes toward them. These unconscious social signals are not just a back channel or a complement to our conscious language; they form a separate communication network. Biologically based “honest signaling,” evolved from ancient primate signaling mechanisms, offers an unmatched window into our intentions, goals, and values. If we understand this ancient channel of communication, Pentland claims, we can accurately predict the outcomes of situations ranging from job interviews to first dates. Pentland, an MIT professor, has used a specially designed digital sensor worn like an ID badge—a “sociometer”—to monitor and analyze the back-and-forth patterns of signaling among groups of people. He and his researchers found that this second channel of communication, revolving not around words but around social relations, profoundly influences major decisions in our lives—even though we are largely unaware of it. Pentland presents the scientific background necessary for understanding this form of communication, applies it to examples of group behavior in real organizations, and shows how by “reading” our social networks we can become more successful at pitching an idea, getting a job, or closing a deal. Using this “network intelligence” theory of social signaling, Pentland describes how we can harness the intelligence of our social network to become better managers, workers, and communicators.

Book Bleeding Out

    Book Details:
  • Author : Thomas Abt
  • Publisher : Basic Books
  • Release : 2019-06-25
  • ISBN : 1541645715
  • Pages : 304 pages

Download or read book Bleeding Out written by Thomas Abt and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2019-06-25 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a Harvard scholar and former Obama official, a powerful proposal for curtailing violent crime in America Urban violence is one of the most divisive and allegedly intractable issues of our time. But as Harvard scholar Thomas Abt shows in Bleeding Out, we actually possess all the tools necessary to stem violence in our cities. Coupling the latest social science with firsthand experience as a crime-fighter, Abt proposes a relentless focus on violence itself -- not drugs, gangs, or guns. Because violence is "sticky," clustering among small groups of people and places, it can be predicted and prevented using a series of smart-on-crime strategies that do not require new laws or big budgets. Bringing these strategies together, Abt offers a concrete, cost-effective plan to reduce homicides by over 50 percent in eight years, saving more than 12,000 lives nationally. Violence acts as a linchpin for urban poverty, so curbing such crime can unlock the untapped potential of our cities' most disadvantaged communities and help us to bridge the nation's larger economic and social divides. Urgent yet hopeful, Bleeding Out offers practical solutions to the national emergency of urban violence -- and challenges readers to demand action.

An exclusive network of powerful men seeking control in the Church of England.A shared secret of abuse that casts a dark shadow over a whole generation of Christian leaders. This is the extraordinary true story of John Smyth QC, a high-flying barrister who used his role in the church to abuse more than a hundred men and boys in three countries. It tells how he was spirited out of the UK, and how he played the role of moral crusader to evade justice over four decades. It reveals how scores of respected church leaders turned a blind eye to his history of abuse. Journalist and broadcaster Andrew Graystone has pursued the truth about Smyth and those who enabled him to escape justice. He has heard the excruciating testimony of many of Smyth's victims, and has uncovered court and church documents, reports, letters and emails.
