Book excerpt: I never wanted to settle down. Until she careened into my life. I'm a star forward for the Baltimore Breakers, and only interested in three things—pucks, food, and an ever-revolving door of women. Until Dommie. The woman is as smart as she is infuriating, and more stubborn than any person I have ever met. Her walls are thick and impenetrable and for the first time in my life, I want to break through every barrier in my way and get to the heart of a woman. Because…I like her. And I want her. But how can I convince her to let me keep her forever?

Book excerpt: In the network of streams draining the eastern portion of Michigan and known as the Saginaw waters, the great firm of Morrison & Daly had for many years carried on extensive logging operations in the wilderness. The number of their camps was legion, of their employees a multitude. Each spring they had gathered in their capacious booms from thirty to fifty million feet of pine logs. Now at last, in the early eighties, they reached the end of their holdings. Another winter would finish the cut. Two summers would see the great mills at Beeson Lake dismantled or sold, while Mr. Daly, the "woods partner" of the combination, would flit away to the scenes of new and perhaps more extensive operations. At this juncture Mr. Daly called to him John Radway, a man whom he knew to possess extensive experience, a little capital, and a desire for more of both.

Download or read book A Tale Blazed Through Heaven written by Oliver J. Noble-Wood and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-10-16 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Tale Blazed Through Heaven examines developments in the representation of the classical tale of Mars, Venus, and Vulcan in the literature and painting of the Golden Age of Spain (c.1526-1681). Anchored in close analysis of individual primary texts, the five chapters that comprise this study assess how poets and painters breathed new life into the tale inherited from Homer, Ovid, and others, examining some of the ways in which the story of Mars, Venus, and Vulcan was disguised, developed, expanded, mocked, combined with or played off against different subjects, or otherwise modified in order to pique the interest of successive generations of readers and viewers. Each chapter discusses what particular changes and shifts in emphasis reveal about the tale itself, specific renderings, the aims and intentions of individual poets and painters, and the wider context of the literary and visual culture of Early Modern Spain. Discussing a range of poems by both canonical (Garcilaso de la Vega, Luis de Góngora, Lope de Vega, etc.) and less well-known writers (Juan de la Cueva, Alonso de Castillo Solórzano, Salvador Jacinto Polo de Medina, etc.), and culminating in detailed examination of select mythological works by Philip IV's court painter, Diego Velázquez, this book sheds light on questions relating to aspects of classical reception in the Renaissance, the rise of specific poetic styles (epic, mock-epic, burlesque, etc.), the interplay between the sister arts of poetry and painting, and the continual process of imitation and invention that was one of the defining features of the Spanish Golden Age.

Book excerpt: Routine-hungry Emmeline White wishes for change after battling against the enemy she finds in herself during her adolescence. The grim skeletons in her closet shape her behaviour and leave her feeling like a lesser person, unable to reach the high ideals set for her by family and friends. Emmeline doesn't know that she can be loved. She doesn't know that she can heal. She doesn't know that anyone has the power to break her down and rebuild her. But someone else does. All she needs to do is burn for him... With cameo appearances from Corri Lee's 'The Price of Success' and the 'Meet Me Halfway' series, 'Blazed' tells a whole new story while adding depth to others through butterfly effects and six degrees of separation. Characters don't just disappear when their story is told; they live on as long as you let them.

Download or read book The Dead Moms Club written by Kate Spencer and published by Seal Press. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kate Spencer lost her mom to cancer when she was 27. In The Dead Moms Club, she walks readers through her experience of stumbling through grief and loss, and helps them to get through it, too. This isn't a weepy, sentimental story, but rather a frank, up-front look at what it means to go through gruesome grief and come out on the other side. An empathetic read, The Dead Moms Club covers how losing her mother changed nearly everything in her life: both men and women readers who have lost parents or experienced grief of this magnitude will be comforted and consoled. Spencer even concludes each chapter with a cheeky but useful tip for readers (like the "It's None of Your Business Card" to copy and hand out to nosy strangers asking about your passed loved one).
