Book excerpt: If the ladder hadn't slipped when Chris Godfrey was chalking up the sports results - and if Sir George Benson hadn't been passing at that very moment - it might never have happened. It had become imperative to fire a conscious human being into space and Sir George, who was Director of Research at Woomera, couldn't see how it was to be done until he met Chris. Once Chris agreed, things moved fast. Whisked to London by the R.A.F., he started his training, was fitted for a G-suit, got to know the landscape of the Moon as well as he knew the school sports ground. Then on to Woomera; and, at last, into space...

Book Backroom Boys

Download or read book Backroom Boys written by Francis Spufford and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2010-11-25 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brilliant, beautiful account of how British boffins triumphed across the decades in creating everything from computer games to Martian landers. The book contains chapters on the Beagle II, Elite - the 80s computer game, the Blue Streak missile, Concorde, mobile phone technology and the Human Genome Project, among others. Britain is the only country in the world to have cancelled its space programme just as it put its first rocket into orbit. Starting with this forgotten episode, 'Backroom Boys' tells the bittersweet story of how one country lost its industrial tradition and got back something else. Sad, inspiring, funny and ultimately triumphant, it follows the technologists whose work kept Concorde flying, created the computer game, conquered the mobile-phone business, saved the human genome for the human race - and who now are sending the Beagle 2 probe to burrow in the cinnamon sands of Mars. 'Backroom Boys' is a vivid love-letter to quiet men in pullovers, to those whose imaginings take shape not in words but in mild steel and carbon fibre and lines of code. Above all, it is a celebration of big dreams achieved with slender means.

Book excerpt: In the 1960s, a group of University of Melbourne Science and Engineering students and one Law student banded together to build a satellite in their spare time. You are invited to the launch of a book that records the journey of those students as they built Australis OSCAR 5 and had it launched into orbit by NASA in January 1970. Australis operated successfully for nearly two months before its batteries ran out. It was the first satellite built in Australia and achieved a number of important technical milestones, including over a dozen world firsts. Then, nearly fifty years later, another group of students, also from the Universiy of Melbourne decided that they too would build a small satellite. Operating in a very different technical, social and regulatory environment and with remarkably similar goals, the team built their cubesat. As if to celebrate the anniversary year of Australis' launch in 1970, ACRUX-1 was launched from New Zealand in 2019.

Book The Domes of Pico

Download or read book The Domes of Pico written by Hugh Walters and published by Gateway. This book was released on 2020-09-22 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Those mysterious domes on the Moon - what were they? Who built them? Thanks to young Chris Godfrey and his historic rocket-flight they had been photographed from outside the atmosphere; they had been under constant observation by the world's astronomers - but the answer was as baffling as ever. Until one day every single atomic power station on Earth suddenly and disastrously went out of action. There could only be one explanation - the extra-terrestrial radiation bombardment of appalling magnitude. And only one possible source of it: the domes of Pico.

Book All the Wonder that Would Be

Download or read book All the Wonder that Would Be written by Stephen Webb and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-05-03 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been argued that science fiction (SF) gives a kind of weather forecast – not the telling of a fortune but rather the rough feeling of what the future might be like. The intention in this book is to consider some of these bygone forecasts made by SF and to use this as a prism through which to view current developments in science and technology. In each of the ten main chapters - dealing in turn with antigravity, space travel, aliens, time travel, the nature of reality, invisibility, robots, means of transportation, augmentation of the human body, and, last but not least, mad scientists - common assumptions once made by the SF community about how the future would turn out are compared with our modern understanding of various scientific phenomena and, in some cases, with the industrial scaling of computational and technological breakthroughs. A further intention is to explain how the predictions and expectations of SF were rooted in the scientific orthodoxy of their day, and use this to explore how our scientific understanding of various topics has developed over time, as well as to demonstrate how the ideas popularized in SF subsequently influenced working scientists. Since gaining a BSc in physics from the University of Bristol and a PhD in theoretical physics from the University of Manchester, Stephen Webb has worked in a variety of universities in the UK. He is a regular contributor to the Yearbook of Astronomy series and has published an undergraduate textbook on distance determination in astronomy and cosmology as well as several popular science books.

Book Operation Columbus

Book excerpt: After the radiation bombardment from those mysterious structures on the Moon - chronicled in The Domes of Pico - it was inevitable, of course, that a lunar landing would have to be made; and Chris thought, too, that it was inevitable that he should be chosen for the job. But things didn't work out quite as planned. There was an American candidate for the honour of piloting the first Western rocket to the Moon; and the Russians had their own schemes for turning it into a Soviet satellite...

Book Terror by Satellite

Download or read book Terror by Satellite written by Hugh Walters and published by Gateway. This book was released on 2020-11-03 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trouble aboard the satellite observatory which has been established to circle the Earth every four hours. It is under the despotic control of a brilliant but unbalanced scientist, Commander Hendricks, who refuses to allow his staff any means of communicating with Earth on their own account. But he doesn't know that Tony Hale, who is one of the engineers in the observatory, has smuggled in his homemade transistor radio. Scientists everywhere are baffled when three brown streaks appear on the Earth's surface, destroying all the vegetation in their path. No one can find the explanation until it is realised that the streaks lie in the direction of the satellite's orbit. Hendricks first refuses to reply to any questions and then announces that he intends to be the world dictator; if the governments of the world refuse to agree he will starve them into surrender by destroying all the vegetation on Earth. The situation seems desperate. But Tony has already used his transistor radio to get in touch with a friend on Earth. His homemade set is now the only means of contact between Earth and the observatory, and through it plans can be made to deal with Hendricks - plans in which Chris Godfrey has a leading role to play.

Book excerpt: In Operation Columbus a landing was made on the Moon. But the mystery of those sinister domes that had suddenly appeared there - and of the evil grey mist that gathered so unaccountably now and then - was as far from a solution as ever. There was only one possible course of action: to establish a permanent base. And once that was decided there wasn't much doubt that young Chris Godfrey would be sent to man it. But this time he isn't alone in his rocket. His old friends Serge and Norrey are with hi,' and he's got a new friend - young Tony whose very life may depend on the expedition's success. In charge of the whole fantastic project is Sir Leo Frayling, cold-blooded and ruthless as ever; and, of course, Sir George Benson and Whiskers Greatrex play their part too.
