Book Translating Nature

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jaime Marroquin Arredondo
  • Publisher : University of Pennsylvania Press
  • Release : 2019-03-26
  • ISBN : 081229601X
  • Pages : 368 pages

Download or read book Translating Nature written by Jaime Marroquin Arredondo and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2019-03-26 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Translating Nature recasts the era of early modern science as an age not of discovery but of translation. As Iberian and Protestant empires expanded across the Americas, colonial travelers encountered, translated, and reinterpreted Amerindian traditions of knowledge—knowledge that was later translated by the British, reading from Spanish and Portuguese texts. Translations of natural and ethnographic knowledge therefore took place across multiple boundaries—linguistic, cultural, and geographical—and produced, through their transmissions, the discoveries that characterize the early modern era. In the process, however, the identities of many of the original bearers of knowledge were lost or hidden in translation. The essays in Translating Nature explore the crucial role that the translation of philosophical and epistemological ideas played in European scientific exchanges with American Indians; the ethnographic practices and methods that facilitated appropriation of Amerindian knowledge; the ideas and practices used to record, organize, translate, and conceptualize Amerindian naturalist knowledge; and the persistent presence and influence of Amerindian and Iberian naturalist and medical knowledge in the development of early modern natural history. Contributors highlight the global nature of the history of science, the mobility of knowledge in the early modern era, and the foundational roles that Native Americans, Africans, and European Catholics played in this age of translation. Contributors: Ralph Bauer, Daniela Bleichmar, William Eamon, Ruth Hill, Jaime Marroquín Arredondo, Sara Miglietti, Luis Millones Figueroa, Marcy Norton, Christopher Parsons, Juan Pimentel, Sarah Rivett, John Slater.

Book The Private Mary Chesnut

Download or read book The Private Mary Chesnut written by Mary Boykin Chesnut and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1984 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pulitzer Prize-winning historian C. Vann Woodward and Chesnut's biographer Elisabeth Muhlenfeld present here the previously unpublished Civil War diaries of Mary Boykin Chesnut. The ideal diarist, Mary Chesnut was at the right place at the right time with the right connections. Daughter of one senator from South Carolina and wife of another, she had kin and friends all over the Confederacy and knew intimately its political and military leaders. At Montgomery when the new nation was founded, at Charleston when the war started, and at Richmond during many crises, she traveled extensively during the war. She watched a world "literally kicked to pieces" and left the most vivid account we have of the death throes of a society. The diaries, filled with personal revelations and indiscretions, are indispensable to an appreciation of our most famous Southern literary insight into the Civil War experience.

Download or read book Italian Neighbors written by Tim Parks and published by Grove/Atlantic, Inc.. This book was released on 2015-01-07 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book of the Year: A deliciously entertaining account of expatriate life in a small village just outside Verona, Italy. Tim Parks is anything but a gentleman in Verona. So after ten years of living with his Italian wife, Rita, in a typical provincial Italian neighborhood, the novelist found that he had inadvertently collected a gallery full of splendid characters. In this wittily observed account, Parks introduces readers to his home town, with a statue of the Virgin at one end of the street, a derelict bottle factory at the other, and a wealth of exotic flora and fauna in between. Via Colombare, the village’s main street, offers an exemplary hodgepodge of all that is new and old in the bel paese, a point of collision between invading suburbia and diehard peasant tradition. It is a world of creeping vines, stuccoed walls, shotguns, security cameras, hypochondria, and expensive sports cars. More than a mere travelogue, Italian Neighbors is a vivid portrait of the real Italy and a compelling story of how even the most foreign people and places gradually assume the familiarity of home. “One of the most delightful travelogues imaginable . . . so vivid, so packed with delectable details.” —Los Angeles Times Book Review

Book Reading Faulkner

Download or read book Reading Faulkner written by Stephen M. Ross and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 1996 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume guides readers through one of William Faulkner's most complex novels. By common consent The Sound and the Fury is a seminal document of twentieth-century literature. Almost from the beginning it has been a litmus test for critical approaches -- from New Criticism to biography and manuscript analysis. In the past two decades nearly all of the newest critical theories have come calling -- deconstruction and new historicism, as well as culture, gender, and race studies.Yet the novel resists or evades even the most ardent theorists' efforts to contain it, and much of its total accomplishment remains unplumbed. Many of its smaller parts are still mysteries, and the novel remains a formidable challenge not just for beginners but for more sophisticated readers as well. This volume, like others in the Reading Faulkner series, provides line-by-line interpretation, concentrating on individual words and sentences, visual dimensions, time shifts, intricacies of narration, and other obscurities. It explores Faulkner's words as they appear on the page, deciphering an responding to them in their linear progression and in their cumulating resonances inside and outside the text. Important allusions and references are identified, as are dates and historical personages. For many passages alternative readings are offered. The pagination is keyed to the definitive text of the Vintage edition.
