Download or read book Playing Jazz in Socialist Vietnam written by Stan BH Tan-Tangbau and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the EuroSEAS Humanities Book Prize 2022 Quyền Văn Minh (b. 1954) is not only a jazz saxophonist and lecturer at the prestigious Vietnam National Academy of Music, but he is also one of the most preeminent jazz musicians in Vietnam. Considered a pioneer in the country, Minh is often publicly recognized as the “godfather of Vietnamese jazz.” Playing Jazz in Socialist Vietnam tells the story of the music as it intertwined with Minh’s own narrative. Stan BH Tan-Tangbau details Minh’s life story, telling how Minh pioneered jazz as an original genre even while navigating the trials and tribulations of a fervent socialist revolution, of the ideological battle that was the Cold War, of Vietnam’s war against the United States, and of the political changes during the Đổi Mới period between the mid-1980s and the 1990s. Minh worked tirelessly and delivered two breakthrough solo recitals in 1988 and 1989, marking the first time jazz was performed in the public sphere in the socialist state. To gain jazz acceptance as a mainstream musical art form, Minh founded Minh Jazz Club. With the release of his debut album of original compositions in 2000, Minh shaped the nascent genre of Vietnamese jazz. Minh’s endeavors kickstarted the momentum, from his performing jazz in public, teaching jazz both formally and informally, and contributing to the shaping of an original Vietnamese voice to stand out among the many styles in the jazz world. Most importantly, Minh generated a public space for musicians to play and for the Vietnamese to listen. His work eventually helped to gain jazz the credibility necessary at the national conservatoire to offer instruction in a professional music education program.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Enders, pilot for the French Army during the Great War, returns to Connecticut after wandering post-war France with a condition similar to shell-shocked men from the trenches. At home he must contend with a difficult father, a sister locked in a mysterious post-influenza coma, and a volatile country still in the grips of wartime paranoia and civil liberty restrictions. He finds work building houses in Old Lyme, a summertime town of bootleggers, rum runners, flappers, clammers, crooked deputies, and the famous Old Lyme Art Colony whose impressionist painters don’t want their bucolic landscapes marred by cookie-cutter cottages. Enders falls in love with one of those artists, but encircled by suffocating customs, illiberal laws, and petty criminals, they’re looking for an escape.
Download or read book Biddleborn written by Sheila Stowers and published by Van Rye Publishing, LLC. This book was released on 2022-05-16 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seventeen-year-old Meridian Page has a rich imagination. To escape her quiet and boring town of Biddleborn, she makes up stories in her head—stories about a magic-filled world called Detritus and its inhabitants, including a princess named Lanora and a man called the Cat Lord. Not realizing how thin the walls of reality can be in a town where children have nothing better to do than tell stories, Meridian is shocked when the Cat Lord shows up in Biddleborn and warns her that imaginary characters like him are slipping through from Detritus to the real world. With a doorway from the imaginary world of Detritus open, Meridian’s imaginary characters—talking lawnmowers, a friendly skeleton, mutant animals and other creatures, living appliances, a wise dragon, zombies, dangerous creatures called shadow wights, and more—are increasingly slipping through to Biddleborn. By the time other Biddleborn residents’ imaginary characters begin showing up as well, the town is awash in chaos as evil characters battle good ones and the town’s residents. Can Meridian, her friends Artie and Cheese Fry, their parents, and Biddleborn’s other residents save the town from Meridian’s imagination? Read and find out.
