Book excerpt: Giles Fairhaven, Viscount Kincade, does not believe his life can get much worse after his purse is stolen at an inn before he has paid his bill and then he is set upon by three ruffians in the inn yard before he can leave. But it does grow worse when a little slip of a lady clad only in a flannel nightgown and wielding a large black man's umbrella comes to his rescue and puts his assailants to rout and then--after he has left--pays his reckoning at the inn plus the money he lost the evening before in a card game with a fellow guest plus what he owed the barmaid with whom he spent the night. The ensuing gossip is almost too much humiliation for Giles to bear. Yet when he finds and confronts Daisy Morrison in London, far from being cowed by his displeasure, she declares with sunny good nature that if he insists upon repaying the slight favour she was able to do for him, then he can recommend a lady sponsor to her so that she may find a husband for her younger sister among the gentlemen of the ton. Inexplicably, Giles finds himself agreeing. His troubles are only just beginning.

Book excerpt: Poems of absolute nakedness that chase the power of love, Daniel McGinn is one of the most admired poets in the underground American poetry scene. These works are rooted in the overwhelming minutiae of everyday life: birth and death, marriage and children, work and leisure, sickness and health, hopelessness and redemption and even the comfort of sorrow. A hometown hero in the Southern California poetry scene for over twenty years, Daniel McGinn is known for deceptively simple, meticulously crafted poems. From the mind of this shy, quiet, unassuming man comes beautiful verse, begging to be invited in from out of the rain.

Book excerpt: A delightful illustrated history of the umbrella—protector against rain and sun, weapon, and fashion accessory Culturally ubiquitous and multi-functional, the umbrella comes in many colors, shapes, and sizes, and its significance in different forms and throughout time is explored here. Its use in the ancient cultures of Egypt is discussed, where it was often made of palm leaves and colored feathers, denoted rank, and even had a religious significance. The place of umbrellas in Roman times is also explained, where it was commonly used by women of fashion—and supposedly by effeminate men to defend themselves. This entertaining history also covers the Edwardian times, the Duke of Wellington, London stockbrokers, and the KGB.

Book excerpt: "If sparrows are but a metaphor, every writer faces the challenge of reality, which is to say, how one catches this sparrow." So writes Bei Dao in his preface to Loud Sparrows, a spirited collection of ninety-one short-shorts, an exciting new form of extreme short-storytelling that has swept the creative consciousness of mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. The artistic and aesthetic freedoms of short-shorts enable writers to capture the tone, texture, and chaos of their rapidly changing societies in infinitely inventive ways. Written by Chinese authors over the past three decades, the stories in this anthology are culled from newspapers, magazines, literary journals, and personal collections, and their subjects range from humanist ideals and traditional virtues to the material benefits of a commercialized society.

Book excerpt: This edited book brings together new perspectives on fashion, the body, and politics. The intention of this collection is to explore the cultural intersection between bodies, fashion, and transgression, often in the most unlikely of locations. Bodies are political players in culture and the authors gathered here ask a range of pressing questions. What role do fashioned bodies play in resistance, in meeting governmental boundaries or institutional power? Arguably, fashion is an aspect of modern warfare and style can defend and attack in cultural space. So, how do fashioned bodies occupy the grey area between social control and the resistance to power? This book is interdisciplinary and international, with contributors situated within a broad range of disciplines including Art History and Critical Practice, Cultural Studies, Fashion Critical Studies, Film and Literary Studies, Performance Studies, Politics and International Studies, Sociology, Gender, Queer, LGBTI, and Critical Race Studies.

Book The Fall and Restoration

Download or read book The Fall and Restoration written by Neville and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2018-11-28 with total page 1219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neville was born in Barbados, West Indies in 1905 into a poor English family—nine boys and one girl—where he was raised and educated in a traditional Christian manner. His father who knew about the power of imagining, along with the help of his industrious sons, made the Goddard’s into the largest business presence in the island, and at his death left all ten children independently wealthy. At age seventeen Neville left Barbados for New York City where he worked in retail for several years until he became a dancer in Broadway shows. This led to a stint in London where he was introduced to metaphysical thought, and upon returning to New York he began to teach the law of imagining in 1938 to ever-growing audiences in the East, Los Angeles and San Francisco. When he moved his family to Los Angeles in the early 1950s he was attracting crowds of 2,000 for his Sunday talks. Everyone wanted something—homes, new jobs, mates, money—and he successfully taught them how to fulfill those desires through the use of their all-powerful human imaginations. The techniques, testimonies from his audiences, the creative formula, visions, dreams and Bible interpretations are discussed simply and in detail in these lectures. They encourage any seeker to apply his or her imagination for success, and ultimately lead to the appreciation that there is no intermediary between God (man’s I AM) and man. Starting in 1959 he had a series of six visions over a three and a half year period—resurrection/birth from above; David; splitting of the temple/ascension; and the dove’s descent. Then he understood his mission: To first experience these visions, understand their meanings, and then teach the meaning of these signs that are given to man after multiple lifetimes and all states of consciousness have been played by each individual. These signs confirm the awakening of man’s soul. Man’s origin and destiny are divine—from unity into diversity back to unity, with no loss of individuality. All is forgiven and the exile, the prodigal returns to Lordship, greatly expanded by the journey through limitation, illusion and a sleep likened unto death.
