Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everything Rowan ever dreamed of was taken away the day her father died fighting the skulled-face monsters haunting southern Ithika. When Rowan turned sixteen, she enrolled in the Ithikan Military Academy to become the soldier her father once was. Thinking she could change the world, she runs into her childhood friend Lee, the current captain of the Black Sun Army. Lee joined the army too young, and he's seen death too early. He is no longer the kind and compassionate boy Rowan grew up with when she visited the army base a decade ago. Both are different people, no longer the children they once were. Still, they must push aside their differences to find the end to this war that has taken their share of loved ones. Rowan must learn how to control her recklessness, and Lee must keep his head on his shoulders and his feelings at bay to keep the woman he loves safe. And Taurana-Nhane, a young boy from a tribal island culture, must face his destiny head-on in a most confusing way. For as is custom, he and his friends must go to the Kingdom of Lydia, which colonized Taus island home, to be taught about war and fighting. As Taurana embarks on his journey to adulthood, as he goes off to Lydias cruel and extensive warrior program, he will meet people who represent ideas conflicting with his own peoples reverence for fate and destiny. For the Lydians believe that man is the maker of his own destiny. And when Taurana befriends Draes, prince of Lydia, Taurana begins to adopt the Lydian attitude of a life free from the domain of destinythat is, until he goes to Lydia, where he meets a girl who will in fact bind him to that destiny, which he was just beginning to doubt. Caught now between the political frustrations of a foreign kingdom, doubted now by his own native friends who are weary of him, uncertain now of the way he should go, he must decide what to doto submit to the will of the spirits or to make his own fate. But destiny is too binding, and its two closest allies, time and love, are equally as powerful.

Download or read book Against the Grain written by James Haydock and published by Author House. This book was released on 2011-08-31 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book dramatizes the plight of abolitionist Quakers living in eastern North Carolina during the Civil War. As the war rages from 1861 to 1865, both Union and Confederate forces tramp through the region to destroy whatever they come upon and confiscate, as the war drags on, anything of value. A Quaker family entrenched in rural tradition and a faith emphasizing peace quietly resists the brutality of war but is made to suffer. As Southerners, Union soldiers see them as the enemy. As abolitionists going against the grain of Southern culture, Confederate soldiers despise and harass them. When they refuse to pay the exemption tax, their men are required to go into the army. Refusing to bear arms, their mettle is severely tested at Gettysburg and Petersburg. The book is about courage and endurance in the maw of adversity. It is closely based on historical fact, Confederate records, and Quaker tradition.
