Their children, usually black, rarely interact with each other. #3 I was shocked by how much I changed as a teacher. I was constantly making rules that I then constantly modified. I would raise your hand, but if you cursed, you got a warning. If you put down your classmates, you got a zero. #4 I began to distrust my own system. I distrusted punishment. I was an English teacher, but I seemed to be unable to connect with my students. Book Summary of Woke Racism

Download or read book Summary of Woke Racism written by Alexander Cooper and published by BookSummaryGr. This book was released on 2022-06-07 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Woke Racism - How a New Religion Has Betrayed Black America - A Comprehensive Summary Americans of goodwill on both the left and the right are secretly wondering the same thing: how has the conversation about race in America gotten so out of hand? People of color tell us to read their books and listen to their music, but wearing certain clothes is "appropriation." We are told that being white automatically grants you privilege and that being black automatically makes you a victim. We want to speak up but are afraid of being labeled as uneducated or racist. According to John McWhorter, the issue is that a well-intentioned but perverse version of antiracism has become a religion, yes, the one that is illogical, unattainable, and unintentionally neo-racist. McWhorter reveals the intricacies of this new religion in Woke Racism, from the original evil of "white privilege" as well as the weaponization of the cancel-culture way of life to forbid heretics to the evangelical zeal of the "woke mob." He demonstrates how this religion that purports to "dismantle racist structures" negatively affects his fellow Black Americans by dehumanizing Black people, setting Black students up for failure, and enacting policies that disproportionately harm Black communities. The new religion may be called "antiracism," but it contains racial essentialism that is indistinguishable from racist arguments from the past. Fortunately for Black America and all of us, it is not too late to oppose woke racism. McWhorter provides scripts and encouragement to those attempting to deprogram friends and family members. But, most significantly, he provides a path to justice that will benefit rather than harm Black America. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up in the American South, Esau McCaulley knew firsthand the ongoing struggle between despair and hope that marks the lives of some in the African American context. A key element in the fight for hope, he discovered, has long been the practice of Bible reading and interpretation that comes out of traditional Black churches. This ecclesial tradition is often disregarded or viewed with suspicion by much of the wider church and academy, but it has something vital to say. Reading While Black is a personal and scholarly testament to the power and hope of Black biblical interpretation. At a time in which some within the African American community are questioning the place of the Christian faith in the struggle for justice, New Testament scholar McCaulley argues that reading Scripture from the perspective of Black church tradition is invaluable for connecting with a rich faith history and addressing the urgent issues of our times. He advocates for a model of interpretation that involves an ongoing conversation between the collective Black experience and the Bible, in which the particular questions coming out of Black communities are given pride of place and the Bible is given space to respond by affirming, challenging, and, at times, reshaping Black concerns. McCaulley demonstrates this model with studies on how Scripture speaks to topics often overlooked by white interpreters, such as ethnicity, political protest, policing, and slavery. Ultimately McCaulley calls the church to a dynamic theological engagement with Scripture, in which Christians of diverse backgrounds dialogue with their own social location as well as the cultures of others. Reading While Black moves the conversation forward.

Book The Black Swan by Nassim Nicholas Taleb Summary

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you want more free book summaries like this? Download our app for free at https://www.QuickRead.com/App and get access to hundreds of free book and audiobook summaries. The Impact of the Highly Improbable. Just because you haven’t seen something doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist, right? Well, Nassim Nicholas Taleb uses this exact logic to explain the Black Swans that happen in our society. A Black Swan is an improbable or highly unlikely event that has three principal characteristics. The first two are that it is unpredictable and it carries a massive impact. The third is the ability to construct an explanation after the fact to make it appear less random, and more predictable. Think of events like 9/11 or the invention of Google. These Black Swans, while unpredictable and impactful, could easily be explained in the moments following the event. Black Swans like these underlie almost everything about the world. But why can’t we acknowledge them until after they occur? Well, according to Taleb, humans are simply hardwired to focus on the details rather than see the big picture. We concentrate only on what we know and understand; therefore, we are unable to conceptualize the impossible. As you read, you’ll learn that we can learn a thing or two from turkeys, you'll see how a casino's greatest threat isn't high-rolling gamblers, and how focusing on what we don't know is critical for making informed decisions.

Book Black Reconstruction in America The Oxford W E B Du Bois

Download or read book Black Reconstruction in America The Oxford W E B Du Bois written by W. E. B. Du Bois and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-02-01 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: W. E. B. Du Bois was a public intellectual, sociologist, and activist on behalf of the African American community. He profoundly shaped black political culture in the United States through his founding role in the NAACP, as well as internationally through the Pan-African movement. Du Bois's sociological and historical research on African-American communities and culture broke ground in many areas, including the history of the post-Civil War Reconstruction period. Du Bois was also a prolific author of novels, autobiographical accounts, innumerable editorials and journalistic pieces, and several works of history. Black Reconstruction in America tells and interprets the story of the twenty years of Reconstruction from the point of view of newly liberated African Americans. Though lambasted by critics at the time of its publication in 1935, Black Reconstruction has only grown in historical and literary importance. In the 1960s it joined the canon of the most influential revisionist historical works. Its greatest achievement is weaving a credible, lyrical historical narrative of the hostile and politically fraught years of 1860-1880 with a powerful critical analysis of the harmful effects of democracy, including Jim Crow laws and other injustices. With a series introduction by editor Henry Louis Gates, Jr., and an introduction by David Levering Lewis, this edition is essential for anyone interested in African American history.

Book Summary of My Grandmother s Hands

Download or read book Summary of My Grandmother s Hands written by Alexander Cooper and published by BookSummaryGr. This book was released on 2021-12-26 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary of My Grandmother’s Hands - Racialized Trauma and the Pathway to Mending Our Hearts and Bodies - A Comprehensive Summary Resmaa Menakem’s My Grandmother’s Hands is an excellent book dedicated to guiding readers down the path of healing intergenerational trauma brought on by white supremacy, which manifests itself as white-body supremacy. Trauma is inherent in this white-body supremacy, and affects folks of all races and backgrounds; however, the categories that Menakem primarily focuses on in his path to healing are Black bodies, White bodies, and the bodies of the American police. Menakem writes that trauma responses are that of the lizard brain – the lizard brain does not act reasonably, it acts on primal instincts – fight, flee, or freeze. This response works off of deep-seated biases that one would normally never think to act on.One of the things that is so remarkable about Menakem’s approach to the healing of intergenerational trauma is his insistence on the fact that the key to healing actually lies within our bodies, and not solely our minds. Menakem goes on to insist that, because trauma is not always individual, healing should not be either – but instead can be shared with communities and families. The title, My Grandmother’s Hands, is a tribute to Resmaa Menakem’s childhood memory of feeling his grandmother’s hands, which had been thick with callouses and scars from her days as a slave, picking cotton. Sample Book Insights: #1 Food writer Alison Roman was Twitter-mobbed for having the nerve to criticize two women of color, model and food writer Chrissy Teigen and lifestyle coach Marie Kondo. Roman was eventually suspended from her job. #2 People are getting away with writing racist emails and tweets because the all lives matter crowd is too busy resisting the black lives matter slogan to actually listen to what these people are saying. #3 In 2020, David Shor, a data analyst at a progressive consulting firm, tweeted a study by a black Ivy League political science professor, Omar Wasow, showing that violent black protests during the hot summers of the late 1960s were more likely to make local voters vote Republican. #4 Third Wave Antiracism, which is mainstreamed now, believes that because racism is ingrained in the foundation of American society, any complicity with it is also racism.

Book Summary of Esau McCaulley s Reading While Black

Download or read book Summary of Esau McCaulley s Reading While Black written by Everest Media, and published by Everest Media LLC. This book was released on 2022-07-02T22:59:00Z with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 I was a child of my environment. I was a southern Black boy who loved hip hop, and I knew the Lord and the culture. I loved hip hop because it tended toward nihilism and utilitarian ethics, while my mother’s music, rooted in biblical texts and ideas, offered a vision of something bigger and wider. #2 The nineties were a time of hip hop controversy between the East and West coasts. The struggle at the center of this conflict was the nature of rap music itself. What was the correct demeanor, tone, and focus. #3 I believe that the Black church tradition has a word for our time, and it is called Black ecclesial theology. I want to argue that this unapologetically Black and orthodox reading of the Bible can speak to Black Christians today. #4 The first day of college was white for me. I had never been around white people before, and it was a bit of a culture shock. But I decided to pursue the best of both worlds and study the Bible and history.
