Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Erica N. Walker presents a compelling story of Black mathematical excellence in the United States. Much of the research and discussion about Blacks and mathematics focuses on underachievement; by documenting in detail the experiences of Black mathematicians, this book broadens significantly the knowledge base about mathematically successful African Americans. Beyond Banneker demonstrates how mathematics success is fostered among Blacks by mathematicians, mathematics educators, teachers, parents, and others, a story that has been largely overlooked by the profession and research community. Based on archival research and in-depth interviews with thirty mathematicians, this important and timely book vividly captures important narratives about mathematics teaching and learning in multiple contexts, as well as the unique historical and contemporary settings related to race, opportunity, and excellence that Black mathematicians experience. Walker draws upon these narratives to suggest ways to capitalize on the power and potential of underserved communities to respond to the national imperative for developing math success for new generations of young people.

Download or read book Black Queer Freedom written by GerShun Avilez and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2020-11-09 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether engaged in same-sex desire or gender nonconformity, black queer individuals live with being perceived as a threat while simultaneously being subjected to the threat of physical, psychological, and socioeconomical injury. Attending to and challenging threats has become a defining element in queer black artists’ work throughout the black diaspora. GerShun Avilez analyzes the work of diasporic artists who, denied government protections, have used art to create spaces for justice. He first focuses on how the state seeks to inhibit the movement of black queer bodies through public spaces, whether on the street or across borders. From there, he pivots to institutional spaces—specifically prisons and hospitals—and the ways such places seek to expose queer bodies in order to control them. Throughout, he reveals how desire and art open routes to black queer freedom when policy, the law, racism, and homophobia threaten physical safety, civil rights, and social mobility.

  • Author : Scott Reynolds Nelson
  • Publisher : Basic Books
  • Release : 2022-02-22

  • Pages : 319 pages

Download or read book Oceans of Grain written by Scott Reynolds Nelson and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2022-02-22 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An "incredibly timely" global history journeys from the Ukrainian steppe to the American prairie to show how grain built and toppled the world's largest empires (Financial Times). To understand the rise and fall of empires, we must follow the paths traveled by grain—along rivers, between ports, and across seas. In Oceans of Grain, historian Scott Reynolds Nelson reveals how the struggle to dominate these routes transformed the balance of world power. Early in the nineteenth century, imperial Russia fed much of Europe through the booming port of Odessa, on the Black Sea in Ukraine. But following the US Civil War, tons of American wheat began to flood across the Atlantic, and food prices plummeted. This cheap foreign grain spurred the rise of Germany and Italy, the decline of the Habsburgs and the Ottomans, and the European scramble for empire. It was a crucial factor in the outbreak of the First World War and the Russian Revolution. A powerful new interpretation, Oceans of Grain shows that amid the great powers’ rivalries, there was no greater power than control of grain.

If language is the problem, it is also the solution. The Code of Opposites (TCO) introduces an idea whose time has come: a newly revealed metalanguage to feel the resistance, choose peace, and emPower the NOW. Language is where your Power is. To transform, you must look at the story you tell. Activating a metalanguage – a language beyond all languages – allows you to track patterns, understand the purpose of your self-limiting creations, and be able to turn them off. Cracking this code reveals depths of meaning that animate the soul of all wisdom teachings. The codes are so awesome they naturally raise your vibrational field to the sense of enough by which to resonate with oneness. Radical? Crazy? You betcha! Especially as this ancient language that came back from the future renamed itself “S/Hebrew,” to sanctify the union of the feminine and the masculine. Imagine yourself… * Processing trauma by realizing that mysticism may just be the only proven track to healing. * Having a unifying equation to explore the shadow, and stretch beyond fear into the sacred. * Doing what it takes to raise your self-esteem, and trust yourself in your chosen calling. * Moving out of “ScareCity” by being real enough to know what you want, and ask for it in such a way that you might receive it.
