Book Black Nightmares to Scarlet Dreams

Download or read book Black Nightmares to Scarlet Dreams written by Cara Aldous and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2008-02 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rose Scarlet is a troubled woman; someone is trying to scare her but she doesn't know why. An eerie carving appears on the tree outside her house and a stranger moves into the neighbourhood. The carving matches that on a sword she discovered hidden away in her family home. It belonged to her ancestor and namesake Rosie Scarlet, a pirate captain. The sword once belonged to the man Rosie loved; Blackheart, one of the most evil and notorious pirates of the eighteenth century. When finally captured Blackheart hung for his crimes but Rosie was spared the gallows, pregnant with his child. Centuries later Rose finds her new neighbour Jack Bracken is Blackheart's descendent. The coincidence is remarkable as is Rose and Jack's striking resemblance to the pirates. They fall in love but it is all too easy. The sword is sought by a collector and Jack has been chosen to find it but he has also been drawn to England by a dark enchantment that tortures his mind and threatens to destroy the love he craves.

Book The Dream and the Nightmare

Download or read book The Dream and the Nightmare written by Myron Magnet and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2010-06 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Myron Magnet's The Dream and the Nightmare argues that the radical transformation of American culture that took place in the 1960s brought today's underclass - overwhelmingly urban, dismayingly minority - into existence. Lifestyle experimentation among the white middle class produced often catastrophic changes in attitudes toward marriage and parenting, the work ethic and dependency in those at the bottom of the social ladder, and closed down their exits to the middle class. Texas Governor George W. Bush's presidential campaign has highlighted the continuing importance of The Dream and the Nightmare. Bush read the book before his first campaign for governor in 1994, and, when he finally met Magnet in 1998, he acknowledged his debt to this work. Karl Rove, Bush's principal political adviser, cites it as a road map to the governor's philosophy of ''compassionate conservatism.''

Book American Dream American Nightmare

Download or read book American Dream American Nightmare written by Kathryn Hume and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2022-08-15 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this celebration of contemporary American fiction, Kathryn Hume explores how estrangement from America has shaped the fiction of a literary generation, which she calls the Generation of the Lost Dream. In breaking down the divisions among standard categories of race, religion, ethnicity, and gender, Hume identifies shared core concerns, values, and techniques among seemingly disparate and unconnected writers including T. Coraghessan Boyle, Ralph Ellison, Russell Banks, Gloria Naylor, Tim O'Brien, Maxine Hong Kingston, Walker Percy, N. Scott Momaday, John Updike, Toni Morrison, William Kennedy, Julia Alvarez, Thomas Pynchon, Leslie Marmon Silko, and Don DeLillo. Hume explores fictional treatments of the slippage in the immigrant experience between America's promise and its reality. She exposes the political link between contemporary stories of lost innocence and liberalism's inadequacies. She also invites us to look at the literary challenge to scientific materialism in various searches for a spiritual dimension in life. The expansive future promised by the American Dream has been replaced, Hume finds, by a sense of tarnished morality and a melancholy loss of faith in America's exceptionalism. American Dream, American Nightmare examines the differing critiques of America embedded in nearly a hundred novels and points to the source for recovery that appeals to many of the authors.

Book Nightmare Alley

Download or read book Nightmare Alley written by Mark Osteen and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2013-01-30 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classic film noir offers more than pesky private eyes and beautiful bad girls—it explores the quest for the not-so-attainable American dream. Winner of the CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title of the Choice ACRL Desperate young lovers on the lam (They Live by Night), a cynical con man making a fortune as a mentalist (Nightmare Alley), a penniless pregnant girl mistaken for a wealthy heiress (No Man of Her Own), a wounded veteran who has forgotten his own name (Somewhere in the Night)—this gallery of film noir characters challenges the stereotypes of the wise-cracking detective and the alluring femme fatale. Despite their differences, they all have something in common: a belief in self-reinvention. Nightmare Alley is a thorough examination of how film noir disputes this notion at the heart of the American Dream. Central to many of these films, Mark Osteen argues, is the story of an individual trying, by dint of hard work or, more often, illicit enterprises, to overcome his or her origins and achieve material success. In the wake of World War II, the noir genre tested the dream of upward mobility and the ideas of individualism, liberty, equality, and free enterprise that accompany it. Employing an impressive array of theoretical perspectives (including psychoanalysis, art history, feminism, and music theory) and combining close reading with original primary source research, Nightmare Alley proves both the diversity of classic noir and its potency. This provocative and wide-ranging study revises and refreshes our understanding of noir's characters, themes, and cultural significance.

Book Dreams and Nightmares

Download or read book Dreams and Nightmares written by Coretha Davenport and published by Fulton Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-09-27 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coretha writes personally and openly about some of the deep secrets, abuse, and pain in life she encountered growing up as a child. There wasn't much positive guidance shown from Coretha's family at all. She grew up basically making decisions for herself and fending for herself. She became pregnant at an early age by a man who was twice her age. She heard nothing but negative comments from her family members, saying that she was going to be a teen dropout from high school, who lives on welfare assistance. She was persistent and determined to not need her family for anything when it came to raising her kids. She also went through sexual abuse and physical abuse from members of her family. She blamed herself in many ways, that there could have been something she could have done to stop the abuse from happening. Instead of being protected by her family members, she heard gossiping, and her so-called family tried to keep her silent. Even though she grew up in church as a child, she began to feel like God had betrayed her. She felt lost in the world and not protected. She became promiscuous as an adolescent. She enjoyed partying, sex, and dating hustler men. Despite her lifestyle, there wasn't anything she wouldn't do for her kids. At times, she held down two jobs at a time, just to make sure that her kids were straight. For years, Coretha thought that she wouldn't find that special someone to love her for her, and she did. Black was her everything. He treated her like a queen and gave her security and unconditional love. But that had soon come to an end when Black was killed. The pain she felt was unbearable. She was lost and became deeply depressed. "God, why did you have to take him away from me so soon? I will never be the same."
