Download or read book Mineral Scales and Deposits written by Zahid Amjad and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2015-05-21 with total page 785 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mineral Scales and Deposits: Scientific and Technological Approaches presents, in an integrated way, the problem of scale deposits (precipitation/crystallization of sparingly-soluble salts) in aqueous systems, both industrial and biological. It covers several fundamental aspects, also offering an applications' perspective, with the ultimate goal of helping the reader better understand the underlying mechanisms of scale formation, while also assisting the user/reader to solve scale-related challenges. It is ideal for scientists/experts working in academia, offering a number of crystal growth topics with an emphasis on mechanistic details, prediction modules, and inhibition/dispersion chemistry, amongst others. In addition, technologists, consultants, plant managers, engineers, and designers working in industry will find a field-friendly overview of scale-related challenges and technological options for their mitigation. - Provides a unique, detailed focus on scale deposits, includes the basic science and mechanisms of scale formation - Present a field-friendly overview of scale-related challenges and technological options for their mitigation - Correlates chemical structure to performance - Provides guidelines for easy assessment of a particular case, also including solutions - Includes an extensive list of industrial case studies for reference

Download or read book Applications of Advanced Technology to Ash Related Problems in Boilers written by L. Baxter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 655 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the behavior of inorganic material in combustion systems. The past decade has seen unprecedented improvements in understanding the rates and mecha nisms of inorganic transformations and in developing analytical tools to predict them. These tools range from improved fuel analysis procedures to predictive computer codes. While this progress has been met with great enthusiasm within the research community, the practices of the industrial community remain largely unchanged. The papers in this book were selected from those presented at an Engineering Foundation Conference of the same title. All have been peer reviewed. The intent of the conference was to illustrate the application of advanced technology to ash-related problems in boilers and, by so doing, engage the research and industrial communities in more productive dialog. Those attending the conference generally felt that we were successful on these counts. We also engaged the industrial community to a greater extent than ever before in the conference discussion and presentation. We hope these proceedings will facilitate a continued and improved interaction between industrial and research communities. Behavior of inorganic material has long been recognized as one of the major considerations affecting the design and operation of boilers that burn ash-producing fuels. The practical problems associated with the behavior are sometimes catastrophic and spec tacular, ranging from major slag falls that damage the bottom of furnaces to complete plugging of convection passes.
Download or read book Quantifying the Effect of Extractives from Mountain Pine Beetle attacked Lodgepole Pine for Pulp and Papermaking written by Paul Alexandre Bicho and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pulping of mountain pine beetle-killed wood can impact tall oil recovery, and severe foaming events exist. These effects may be related to changes in the levels and profiles of extractives in beetle-killed wood. This report summarizes existing knowledge regarding the influence of mountain pine beetle attack on extractives. It expands on this knowledge by using PLS-DA modeling to follow changes in extractives profiles with unattacked-green, red and grey stage woods. Result show that red stage pine has lower levels of glycerides and pimaric acid, but higher levels of sterols, than unattacked green wood. Grey stage woods have extractives profiles that are comparable to unattacked wood, likely due to the biodegradation of glycerides or to abiotic effects. While extractives are implicated in the foaming tendency of TMP pressates and black liquors from beetle-infested wood, other factors related to wood chemistry are just as important when addressing the foaming issue.

Download or read book The Apartheid City and Beyond written by David M. Smith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apartheid as legislated racial separation substantially changed the South African urban scene. Race group areas' remodelled the cities, while the creation of homelands', mini-states and the pass laws' controlling population migration constrained urbanization itself. In the mid-1980s the old system - having proved economically inefficient and politically divisive - was replaced by a new policy of orderly urbanization'. This sought to accelerate industrialization and cultural change by relaxing the constraints on urbanization imposed by state planning. The result was further political instability and a quarter of the black (or African) population housed in shanty towns. Negotiations between the Nationalist government and the African National Congress are working towards the end of the old apartheid system. Yet the negation of apartheid is only the beginning of the creation of a new society. The vested interests and entrenched ideologies behind the existing pattern of property ownership survive the abolition of apartheid laws. Beyond race, class and ethnicity will continue to divide urban life. If the cities of South Africa are to serve all the people, the accelerating process of urbanization must be brought under control and harnessed to a new purpose. The contributors to this volume draw on a broad range of experience and disciplines to present a variety of perspectives on urban South Africa.
