Book excerpt: About the Book In The Black Heart and Black Heart’s End, we’ve seen Janie struggle with life’s handouts and her struggles with life’s hurdles with matters of relationships and a particular event, Mandy’s death—as divulged to Janie by Alex, when in a romantic relationship with him. There’s been placement of interest in Janie's life with Mandy’s death, because Alex had a previous relationship with Mandy while he was married. Janie’s desire for answers has increased because of the build-up in friendship with Lolly, Mandy’s daughter. Their earlier searches for answers have allowed for a narrowing down to a particular point of history for Mandy: Mexico. Black Hearts Revealed begins with Janie recovering from her fall in her garden, and it has yet to be determined as to whether it was a deliberate or an accidental event. Janie’s pursuit to uncover the mystery surrounding Mandy’s passing continues, but not without additional challenges posed by others and particularly those presented by Alex, Janie’s primary suspect. Throughout it all, Janie manages to maintain her sense of humor and utilizes it mostly for gaining solace with the men in her life. At the end of the day, there is still the unknown whereabouts of Janie’s black heart necklace which causes her to wonder if its location will ever be revealed. Later, she is gifted a replacement from an unknown source, but will the new item pacify her desire for the old? Now, we’ll have revealed the perpetrator of Mandy’s death....Or will we? About the Author Jamie Reynolds resides in Southern California and is currently deciding if a fourth book to the series will be necessary for purposes of divulging an unexpected conclusion to this story.

Book excerpt: “Riveting. . . a testament to a misconceived war, and to the ease with which ordinary men, under certain conditions, can transform into monsters.”—New York Times Book Review This is the story of a small group of soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division’s fabled 502nd Infantry Regiment—a unit known as “the Black Heart Brigade.” Deployed in late 2005 to Iraq’s so-called Triangle of Death, a veritable meat grinder just south of Baghdad, the Black Hearts found themselves in arguably the country’s most dangerous location at its most dangerous time. Hit by near-daily mortars, gunfire, and roadside bomb attacks, suffering from a particularly heavy death toll, and enduring a chronic breakdown in leadership, members of one Black Heart platoon—1st Platoon, Bravo Company, 1st Battalion—descended, over their year-long tour of duty, into a tailspin of poor discipline, substance abuse, and brutality. Four 1st Platoon soldiers would perpetrate one of the most heinous war crimes U.S. forces have committed during the Iraq War—the rape of a fourteen-year-old Iraqi girl and the cold-blooded execution of her and her family. Three other 1st Platoon soldiers would be overrun at a remote outpost—one killed immediately and two taken from the scene, their mutilated corpses found days later booby-trapped with explosives. Black Hearts is an unflinching account of the epic, tragic deployment of 1st Platoon. Drawing on hundreds of hours of in-depth interviews with Black Heart soldiers and first-hand reporting from the Triangle of Death, Black Hearts is a timeless story about men in combat and the fragility of character in the savage crucible of warfare. But it is also a timely warning of new dangers emerging in the way American soldiers are led on the battlefields of the twenty-first century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Let me take you on a journey through my memories, a journey filled with despair, yet brimming with hope. I'm one of the children of a cacodemonic (demon-possessed) biological dad. My memoirs are both gripping and inspirational. They chronicle my life from when I asked Jesus into my heart, at the tender age of sixteen (after living on the streets for two years), to the birth of all four of my children and my dad's funeral. My prequel will take the reader deeper into my childhood""from my birth to my sixteenth year of life. I believe these books are important because they shed a much-needed light on the sensitive subjects of neglect and abuse from a firsthand eyewitness. I hope and pray that they'll become a valuable resource for others like me and for the people who love them and are trying to help. For those of you who've also suffered the pain of neglect and abuse, I'd like to say, "I'm sorry." Nobody on earth will ever fully understand your pain. That's God's job! Jesus became a man so that He could walk in our shoes, and He suffered horribly on the cross, willingly to save us from ourselves and this world. He can save you, but only if you let Him!

He doesn’t know what happened to her—only that her books have been banned—and he resents that she cared more about her work than about him. Then one day, Bird receives a mysterious letter containing only a cryptic drawing, and soon he is pulled into a quest to find her. His journey will take him back to the many folktales she poured into his head as a child, through the ranks of an underground network of heroic librarians, and finally to New York City, where he will finally learn the truth about what happened to his mother, and what the future holds for them both. Our Missing Hearts is an old story made new, of the ways supposedly civilized communities can ignore the most searing injustice. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when slavery was spreading and the country was steeped in racism, two white men and two black men overcame social barriers and mistrust to form a unique alliance that sought nothing less than the end of all evil. Drawing on the largest extant bi-racial correspondence in the Civil War era, John Stauffer braids together these men's struggles to reconcile ideals of justice with the reality of slavery and oppression. Who could imagine that Gerrit Smith, one of the richest men in the country, would give away his wealth to the poor and ally himself with Frederick Douglass, an ex-slave? And why would James McCune Smith, the most educated black man in the country, link arms with John Brown, a bankrupt entrepreneur, along with the others? Distinguished by their interracial bonds, they shared a millennialist vision of a new world where everyone was free and equal. As the nation headed toward armed conflict, these men waged their own war by establishing model interracial communities, forming a new political party, and embracing violence. Their revolutionary ethos bridged the divide between the sacred and the profane, black and white, masculine and feminine, and civilization and savagery that had long girded western culture. In so doing, it embraced a malleable and "black-hearted" self that was capable of violent revolt against a slaveholding nation, in order to usher in a kingdom of God on earth. In tracing the rise and fall of their prophetic vision and alliance, Stauffer reveals how radical reform helped propel the nation toward war even as it strove to vanquish slavery and preserve the peace.

Book Black Heart

Download or read book Black Heart written by Phillip M. Richards and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2006 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black Heart is a provocative and polemical critique of African American literary studies at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Through a series of sharp and insightful essays on a wide range of critical thinkers, Phillip M. Richards traces what he sees as an erosion of moral reflection in African American literary culture - a process that has left contemporary black academic criticism socially, politically, and culturally hollow. Exploring the work of Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Michael Dyson, Karla Holloway and others, Black Heart sets forth the rhetorical strategies of present-day African American critical writing, and probes the ethical dimensions of its institutional life in the academy, the media, and the public sphere. Richards undertakes to recover the procedures by which cultural and moral value may be recovered for black literary culture and to establish the possibilities for a new humanism in African American writing and literary culture.

Book excerpt: What comes into your mind when you hear the phrase "communion with God"? Sitting cross-legged, eyes closed, arms outstretched, humming? Losing yourself in emotional ecstasy? Being ushered into another dimension? Centering rituals? Emptying your mind and hearing audible voices from God? Through a series of meditations on several biblical passages, Scott Aniol demonstrates that communion with God is not mystical or mysterious--rather, communion with God is rooted in the gospel of Jesus Christ, clearly communicated throughout the Scriptures, and absolutely vital for a fruitful Christian life that brings God ultimate glory.
