Book Black Barty

Download or read book Black Barty written by Aubrey Burl and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2006-01-19 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black Bart went to sea at a young age and took to pirate life well. After his ship was taken by pirates, and he was made to join their ranks, Roberts proved himself and was elected captain in 1719. Two years after Roberts was made captain he had accumulated over 51 million pounds worth of treasure and had taken close to 400 ships throughout the Americas, Africa and Europe. He was fearless in battle but good to his prisoners and fair to his crew. He drank a lot of tea instead of alcohol, was well-mannered and clean shaven, and discouraged drinking and gambling among his crew. He is believed to be the first pirate to fly the skull and crossbones. Despite his brief career, Roberts created a reputation that can never be surpassed. Along with his success and bloodthirstiness, he was said to have been "an unusual character for this age, described as tall, good-looking, teetotal, and always well dressed. He possessed a ruthless skill in the piratical arts of intimidation and seamanship, and was highly regarded by his crew."

In a single, readable, and affordable volume, Lane and Bialuschewski present a wonderfully diverse body of primary texts on sea raiders. Drawn from a variety of sources, including the authors' own archival research and translations, these carefully curated texts cover over two hundred years (1548–1726) of global, early-modern piracy. Lane and Bialuschewski provide glosses of each document and a succinct introduction to the historical context of the period and avoid the romanticized and Anglo-centric depictions of maritime predation that often plague work on the topic." —Jesse Cromwell, The University of Mississippi

Book excerpt: The Most Evil Pirates in History takes a scintillating look at fifteen of the most evil swashbucklers of all time, including John Avery - perhaps Britain's most infamous pirate of the late seventeenth century, and the model for Daniel Defoe's wicked hero in Life, Adventures, and Pyracies, of the Famous Captain Singleton (1720). Also featured is Edward Teach or 'Blackbeard', whose death - he sustained multiple sword and gunshot wounds in a fearsome hand-to-hand combat - was as sensationalist and violent as his life. Read about Edward Low, ship-rigger turned pirate, who is alleged to have forced prisoners to eat pieces of their own flesh before killing them. Among those included are William Kidd, Cheng I Soa, Captain Hiram Breakes, Anne Bonny, John Rackam (aka 'Calico Jack') and Grace O'Malley.
