Book excerpt: * A Best Book of 2017 —Writer's Bone "[A] mysterious work of metafiction... dizzying, arresting and defiantly bold." —Laura Pearson, Chicago Tribune Amrapali Anna Singh is an historian and analyst capable of discerning the most cryptic and trivial details from audio recordings. One day, a mysterious man appears at her office in Dutch Harbor, Alaska, having traveled a great distance to bring her three Type IV audio cassettes that bear the stamp of a library in Buenos Aires that may or may not exist. On the cassettes is the deposition of an adventure journalist and his obsessive pursuit of an amorphous, legendary, and puzzling "City of Dreams." Spanning decades, his quest leads him from a snake-hunter in the Louisiana bayou to the walled city of Kowloon on the eve of its destruction, from the Singing Dunes of Mongolia to a chess tournament in Istanbul. The deposition also begs the question: Who is making the recording, and why? Despite being explicitly instructed not to, curiosity gets the better of Singh and she mails a transcription of the cassettes with her analysis to an acquaintance before vanishing. The man who bore the cassettes, too, has disappeared. The journalist was unnamed. Here—for the first time—is the complete archival manuscript of the mysterious recordings accompanied by Singh's analysis.

  • Pages : 439 pages

Download or read book Whole Earth Discipline written by Stewart Brand and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2010-09-28 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An icon of the environmental movement outlines a provocative approach for reclaiming our planet According to Stewart Brand, a lifelong environmentalist who sees everything in terms of solvable design problems, three profound transformations are under way on Earth right now. Climate change is real and is pushing us toward managing the planet as a whole. Urbanization?half the world?s population now lives in cities, and eighty percent will by midcentury?is altering humanity?s land impact and wealth. And biotechnology is becoming the world?s dominant engineering tool. In light of these changes, Brand suggests that environmentalists are going to have to reverse some longheld opinions and embrace tools that they have traditionally distrusted. Only a radical rethinking of traditional green pieties will allow us to forestall the cataclysmic deterioration of the earth?s resources. Whole Earth Discipline shatters a number of myths and presents counterintuitive observations on why cities are actually greener than countryside, how nuclear power is the future of energy, and why genetic engineering is the key to crop and land management. With a combination of scientific rigor and passionate advocacy, Brand shows us exactly where the sources of our dilemmas lie and offers a bold and inventive set of policies and solutions for creating a more sustainable society. In the end, says Brand, the environmental movement must become newly responsive to fast-moving science and take up the tools and discipline of engineering. We have to learn how to manage the planet?s global-scale natural infrastructure with as light a touch as possible and as much intervention as necessary.

Book Cross Examined Films

Download or read book Cross Examined Films written by Matthew King and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2017-12-06 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After spending nearly a quarter of a lifetime watching popular and independent films, Matthew King, RN, makes a point to criticize the Christian church for its lack of engagement with films. He believes that the lack of engagement and the strong denunciation of films only because of their sexual or violent content has lost an entire generation because of the inability to speak the millennial language of popular Hollywood films. With searing prose and biting confrontation, King attempts to engage films through the lens of theology, philosophy, and political analysis to assist the church in identifying positive as well as negative examples of the topics within to better engage an entire generation. Through this investigation, Christians and non-Christians alike will be both enlightened and surprised at what popular films have unconsciously taught them from a young age.

Book Fire and Power

    Book Details:
  • Author : William D. Atwill
  • Publisher : University of Georgia Press
  • Release : 2010-10-01
  • ISBN : 0820337730
  • Pages : 186 pages

Download or read book Fire and Power written by William D. Atwill and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Fire and Power William D. Atwill maps the cultural contours of space-age America through readings of some of the era's most popular and influential narratives: Saul Bellow's Mr. Sammler's Planet, John Updike's Rabbit Redux, Norman Mailer's Of a Fire on the Moon, Tom Wolfe's The Right Stuff, Thomas Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow, and Don DeLillo's Ratner's Star. Together, Atwill demonstrates, these key texts comprise a literary history of the space age, an exploration of the novel's possibilities in uncertain times, and a disturbing critique of postwar society. The massive technological enterprise known as the Manned Space Program was, in Atwill's words, “the historical marker of our age,” and in our race to the moon, he says, Bellow, Updike, Mailer, Wolfe, Pynchon, and DeLillo found a trope for the postmodern condition. To these writers, the space program was the most visible and outward sign of a radical shift in the culture that fostered it—a shift from modernism's search for interior, individual unity amidst chaos to the postmodern perception of the individual's fragmentation and uncertain standing in the world.

Book Tales of Futures Past

Download or read book Tales of Futures Past written by Paola Iovene and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-09 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most studies of Chinese literature conflate the category of the future with notions of progress and nation building, and with the utopian visions broadcast by the Maoist and post-Mao developmental state. The future is thus understood as a preconceived endpoint that is propagated, at times even imposed, by a center of power. By contrast, Tales of Futures Past introduces "anticipation"—the expectations that permeate life as it unfolds—as a lens through which to reexamine the textual, institutional, and experiential aspects of Chinese literary culture from the 1950s to 2011. In doing so, Paola Iovene connects the emergence of new literary genres with changing visions of the future in contemporary China. This book provides a nuanced and dynamic account of the relationship between state discourses, market pressures, and individual writers and texts. It stresses authors' and editors' efforts to redefine what constitutes literature under changing political and economic circumstances. Engaging with questions of translation, temporality, formation of genres, and stylistic change, Iovene mines Chinese science fiction and popular science, puts forward a new interpretation of familiar Chinese avant-garde fiction, and offers close readings of texts that have not yet received any attention in English-language scholarship. Far-ranging in its chronological scope and impressive in its interdisciplinary approach, this book rethinks the legacies of socialism in postsocialist Chinese literary modernity.

Book excerpt: The dramas of mid-life are dramas of abandonment and freedom, of highly charged sexual engagements in real time or in fantasy, and of sudden encounters with mortality and loss. The details are as varied as people's lives are diverse but similar themes reappear with unerring regularity over and over in mid-life. It is a time when everything - from the most fundamental questions of identity and meaning to the daily experience of our own bodies and sexuality - is thrown into upheaval, making mid-life transition for many people the most disturbing period since the onset of adolescence.Recognizing that many of us feel, sometimes very much to our surprise, that we have lost our way at mid-life, Polden explores compassionately and sensitively the origins and experiences of mid-life crisis. Regeneration is a fundamentally optimistic book that argues that, while deep-seated changes are often painful, there are great gains to be made at mid-life. By helping readers toward improved self-awareness and a better understanding of the demands and choices of mid-life, Regeneration shows how we can begin to lead lives more truly informed by the values that will serve us best in the second halves of our lives.

Book Flawless Inside the Largest Diamond Heist in History

Download or read book Flawless Inside the Largest Diamond Heist in History written by Scott Andrew Selby and published by Sterling Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Tells the story with the gripping pace of a true-crime 'Ocean's Eleven.'" The New York Post • "Like a diamond, this true-life caper is clear, colorful, and brilliant." Publishers Weekly ★Starred Review★ The Antwerp Diamond Center was one of the most secure buildings in the world. With hundreds of millions of dollars' worth of diamonds stored in its subterranean vault, it had to be. Located in the heart of Belgium's ultra-secure Antwerp Diamond District, it benefited from two police stations, armed patrols, extensive video surveillance, and vehicle barriers securing an area where 80 percent of the world's diamonds traded hands. But on February 15, 2003, a band of skilled Italian thieves — fronted by the charming Leonardo Notarbartolo, who spent over two years clandestinely casing the building — subverted every one of the Diamond Center's defenses and made off with a record amount of loot. Experts estimate they got away with nearly half a billion dollars in diamonds, cash and other valuables. They'd pulled off the biggest heist in history--everybody loves diamonds and they now had more than any thief before them. The robbers did it with stealth and smarts; no one was hurt or even threatened during what was quickly labeled the largest diamond heist in history. The bandits — members of a group of professional thieves known as "The School of Turin" — used cunning in lieu of violence, successfully evading security cameras, thwarting an array of electronic sensors, and penetrating a vault protected by a double-locked foot-thick steel door. Even when the police zeroed in on who committed the crime, how it was done remained a mystery, like something out of a heist movie or TV show. Flawless is a fast-paced global scavenger hunt uncovering the truth behind the daring Valentine's Day weekend heist. Tracking clues, sources, and documents throughout Europe — from seedy cafés in Turin, Italy to sleek diamond offices in Antwerp, Belgium — authors Scott Selby and Greg Campbell retrace Notarbartolo's careful discovery of the building's security flaws. They recreate the heist and its aftermath — detailing how the thieves brilliantly neutralized each element of the security protecting the Diamond Center's vault while inviting the readers into the secretive world of diamonds and diamond dealing. The result is a thrilling ride through the better-than-fiction heist of the century. "Fans of caper books and movies will be in seventh heaven." Booklist ★Starred Review★
