Book excerpt: Clearing his throat, Pete said, "I have some really bad news, guys; the explosion blew a big hole in the bottom of the cabin. I can hear sea water rushing in; it's already flooding through the hold in the floor." On a peaceful, sunny Sunday in 1948, six couples from Ocala, Florida, step onto a wooden boat named Hazy Days docked off the Gulf of Mexico. It's nearly thirty-eight feet of old Florida charm, with gaily painted racing stripes and enough room for the women to chat and the men to stretch out and fish. The boat cruises under the expert care of its captain, the old salt L. B. Wilson and his fishing guide, trusted friend, and close ally Buck Gilley. The two expect little more on this fine Florida Sunday than a slight sunburn and an ice bin full of fresh Florida grouper. But tragedy strikes the Hazy Days some thirty miles off the coast. It catches fire, and all fourteen hearty souls are forced to dive into the salty brine. Among them, they share nine life vests. But it's not enough-nine innocent lives are lost. Author Anzie Norris lost her aunt and two uncles in the accident and seeks to tell their heartbreaking story in Gone Fishing: A Novel of Old Florida and Her Tragic Seas.

Book eGods

    Book Details:
  • Author : William Sims Bainbridge
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2013-04-01
  • ISBN : 0199323712
  • Pages : 336 pages

Download or read book eGods written by William Sims Bainbridge and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-04-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the relationship between religion and multi-player online roleplaying games? Are such games simply a secular distraction from traditional religious practices, or do they in fact offer a different route to the sacred? In eGods, a leading scholar in the study of virtual gameworlds takes an in-depth look at the fantasy religions of 41 games and arrives at some surprising conclusions. William Sims Bainbridge investigates all aspects of the gameworlds' religious dimensions: the focus on sacred spaces; the prevalence of magic; the fostering of a tribal morality by both religion and rules programmed into the game; the rise of cults and belief systems within the gameworlds (and how this relates to cults in the real world); the predominance of polytheism; and, of course, how gameworld religions depict death. As avatars are multiple and immortal, death is merely a minor setback in most games. Nevertheless, much of the action in some gameworlds centers on the issue of mortality and the problematic nature of resurrection. Examining EverQuest II, Lord of the Rings Online, Rift, World of Warcraft, Star Wars: The Old Republic, and many others, Bainbridge contends that gameworlds offer a new perspective on the human quest, one that combines the arts, simulates many aspects of real life, and provides meaningful narratives about achieving goals by overcoming obstacles. Indeed, Bainbridge suggests that such games take us back to those ancient nights around the fire, when shadows flickered and it was easy to imagine the monsters conjured by the storyteller lurking in the forest. Arguing that gameworlds reintroduce a curvilinear model of early religion, where today as in ancient times faith is inseparable from fantasy, eGods shows how the newest secular technology returns us to the very origins of religion so that we might "arrive where we started and know the place for the first time."

Book The Road to Rescue

Download or read book The Road to Rescue written by Mietek Pemper and published by Other Press, LLC. This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Don’t thank me for your survival, thank your valiant Stern and Pemper, who stared death in the face constantly.”—Oskar Schindler in a speech to his released Jewish workers in May 1945. Steven Spielberg’s Oscar-winning film Schindler’s List popularized the true story of a German businessman who manipulated his Nazi connections and spent his personal fortune to save some 1,200 Jewish prisoners from certain death during the Holocaust. But few know that those lists were made possible by a secret strategy designed by a young Polish Jew at the Płaszow concentration camp. Mietek Pemper’s compelling and moving memoir tells the true story of how Schindler’s list really came to pass. Pemper was born in 1920 into a lively and cultivated Jewish family for whom everything changed in 1939 when the Germans invaded Poland. Evicted from their home, they were forced into the Krakow ghetto and, later, into the nearby camp of Płaszow where Pemper’s knowledge of the German language was put to use by the sadistic camp commandant Amon Goth. Forced to work as Goth’s personal stenographer from March 1943 to September 1944—an exceptional job for a Jewish prisoner—Pemper soon realized that he could use his position as the commandant’s private secretary to familiarize himself with the inner workings of the Nazi bureaucracy and exploit the system to his fellow detainees’ advantage. Once he gained access to classified documents, Pemper was able to pass on secret information for Schindler to compile his famous lists. After the war, Pemper was the key witness of the prosecution in the 1946 trial against Goth and several other SS officers. The Road to Rescue stands as a historically authentic testimony of one man’s unparalleled courage, wit, defiance, and bittersweet victory over the Nazi regime.

Book Family Secrets 3 Prophetic Destinies

Download or read book Family Secrets 3 Prophetic Destinies written by Nancy Petrey and published by Energion Publications. This book was released on 2022-10-17 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What God begins with your story, God will continue to completion. In this final book of her Family Secrets trilogy, Nancy Petrey ties together the threads of providence as the characters deal with mystery, danger, and a variety of obstacles to fulfilling their destinies. This book again combines fast action, romance, theology, and divine providence in a unique way. You will be learning a variety of things about scripture, history, prophecy and world politics as you enjoy the lively antics (and thoughtful plans) of the characters you have come to know from the first two volumes of this series. Again, history and geography are seriously researched. You’ll find yourself learning a little bit of Hebrew along with the characters. Author and publisher pray that you will hear the call to follow God’s leading and to depend on God’s providence. The people and events are fictional, but the God presented in this story is real. This may be the most entertaining course in theology you could possibly take.
