Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bitter Rot of Apples: Botanical Investigations Department of Agriculture. Some direct, successful studies were made during the last quarter of the Nineteenth Century, and certain other important discoveries found afterward helpful had been made, but the knowledge which is at this date relied upon as a guide in the prevention of these losses has mainly resulted from investiga tions undertaken since the beginning of the year 1900. Thanks to these studies and experiments, it may now be said that what for merly seemed incomprehensible is easily understandable. The cause of the difficulty has been ascertained and a fungus identified as that cause. The time has gone by for any one to cavil in regard to the application of the word cause so used. It is true that the parasite must have conditions suited to itself, but conditions are not active agents. It is the fungus as the active agent working under permis sible conditions of susceptible fruits and of heat and moisture which must be charged, if there is to be such a charge, with the cause of the effects witnessed. Combative measures to be direct must be upon this basis, and even the control of conditions must be upon the assumption that this means warfare upon the living, injury-working parasite. Book The Biology and Management of Bitter Rot of Apple in The Mid Atlantic United States

Download or read book The Biology and Management of Bitter Rot of Apple in The Mid Atlantic United States written by Phillip Martin and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bitter rot is one of the most severe summer and post-harvest rots of apple, especially in warm and humid apple growing regions. In the eastern United States bitter rot was historically considered mostly a disease of southern apple growing regions and was a relatively minor problem in the Mid-Atlantic region. In recent decades there has been an increase in reports from apple growers in the Mid-Atlantic region of losses to bitter rot. This research was conducted to understand why there has been an increase in bitter rot and what practices growers should be using to manage bitter rot. Over 500 apples with bitter rot were sampled from 38 orchards in the Mid-Atlantic region and the causal fungal species identified. The most common species in declining order of abundance were C. fioriniae of the C. acutatum species complex, C. chrysophilum, C. noveboracense, C. siamense, C. fructicola, C. henanense, and C. gloeosporioides sensu stricto of the C. gloeosporioides species complex, and C. nymphaeae of the C. acutatum species complex. The Colletotrichum community in individual orchards tended to be dominated by a single species. While the geographical distributions of these species were highly overlapped, C. fioriniae was slightly more common in cooler areas while species in the C. gloeosporioides species complex were more common in warmer areas. A screening of 220 of these isolates for resistance to 11 fungicide active ingredients in FRAC (Fungicide Resistance Action Committee) groups 1, 7, 9, 11, 12, and 29 found that 5% were resistant to FRAC group 1 with confirmed beta-tubulin E198A mutations, and
