Download or read book On the Historical Development of the Liturgy written by Anton Baumstark and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1921, Anton Baumstark delivered two lectures on the development of the Roman Rite to a gathering at the Abbey of Maria Laach. Abbot Ildefons Herwegen offered to publish those lectures, but Baumstark decided to write a book on the topic instead, which was published two years later as On the Historical Development of the Liturgy. It would be another sixteen years before he produced Comparative Liturgy, for which he is better known. Together the two books lay out Baumstark's liturgical methodology. Comparative Liturgy presents his method; On the Historical Development of the Liturgy offers his model. For nearly a century, On the Historical Development of the Liturgy has been valued by specialists in the field of liturgical studies, both for its description of comparative liturgy and for the portrayal of patterns Baumstark discerns in liturgical development. Also significant are the hypotheses Baumstark proposes and the evidence he brings to bear on problems in liturgical history. In this annotated edition, Fritz West provides the first English translation of this work by Anton Baumstark.

Download or read book Ever Directed Towards the Lord written by Uwe Michael Lang and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The celebration of the liturgy of the Holy Eucharist is one of the central issues in the Roman Catholic Church today. To mark the "Year of the Eucharist", the Society of St. Catherine of Siena held a conference on the Eucharistic liturgy at Oxford in 2005. This book contains the energetic and fruitful reflection of the scholars present at the conference. The contributions are academically demanding yet accessible to a wider audience. The collection does not seek a solution to the current problems, rather it promotes an open discussion about the theological, philosophical and historical issues surrounding the celebration of the liturgy and its future as well as paying attention to the increasing interest in the pre-conciliar rites.

Download or read book The Liturgy in Medieval England written by Richard W. Pfaff and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-09-24 with total page 623 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive historical treatment of the Latin liturgy in medieval England. Richard Pfaff constructs a history of the worship carried out in churches - cathedral, monastic, or parish - primarily through the surviving manuscripts of service books, and sets this within the context of the wider political, ecclesiastical, and cultural history of the period. The main focus is on the mass and daily office, treated both chronologically and by type, the liturgies of each religious order and each secular 'use' being studied individually. Furthermore, hagiographical and historiographical themes - respectively, which saints are prominent in a given witness and how the labors of scholars over the last century and a half have both furthered and, in some cases, impeded our understandings - are explored throughout. The book thus provides both a narrative account and a reference tool of permanent value.
Download or read book English Catholic Historians and the English Reformation 1585 1954 written by John Vidmar and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2019-09-01 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For almost 400 years, Roman Catholics have been writing about the English Reformation, but their contributions have been largely ignored by the scholarly world and the reading public. Thus the myths of corrupt monasteries, a 'Bloody' Mary, and a 'Good' Queen Bess have established themselves in the popular mind. John Vidmar re-examines this literature systematically from the time of the Reformation itself, to the early 1950s, when Philip Hughes produced his monumental Reformation in England.

Download or read book Liturgy in the Twenty First Century written by Alcuin Reid and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-07-14 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Because the Sacred Liturgy is truly the font from which all the Church's power flows...we must do everything we can to put the Sacred Liturgy back at the very heart of the relationship between God and man... I ask you to continue to work towards achieving the liturgical aims of the Second Vatican Council...and to work to continue the liturgical renewal promoted by Pope Benedict XVI, especially through the post-synodal apostolic exhortation Sacramentum Caritatis...and the motu proprio Summorum Pontificum... I ask you to be wise, like the householder...who knows when to bring out of his treasure things both new and old (see: Mtt 13:52), so that the Sacred Liturgy as it is celebrated and lived today may lose nothing of the estimable riches of the Church's liturgical tradition, whilst always being open to legitimate development.' These words of Robert Cardinal Sarah, Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship, underline the liturgy's fundamental role in every aspect of the life and mission of the Church. Liturgy in the Twenty-First Century makes available the different perspectives on this from leading figures such as Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke, Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone, Abbot Philip Anderson, Father Thomas Kocik, Dom Alcuin Reid, and Dr Lauren Pristas. Considering questions of liturgical catechetics, music, preaching, how young people relate to the liturgy, matters of formation and reform, etc., Liturgy in the Twenty-First Century is an essential resource for all clergy and religious and laity involved in liturgical ministry and formation. Bringing forth 'new treasures as well as old,' its contributors identify and address contemporary challenges and issues facing the task of realising the vision of Cardinal Sarah, Cardinal Ratzinger/Benedict XVI and the Second Vatican Council.
Download or read book The Letters of Baron Friedrich Von H gel and Maude D Petre written by Friedrich Freiherr von Hügel and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the first decade of the twentieth century the Roman Catholic Church was shaken to its core by an intellectual reform movement, 'modernism', seeking radical changes in the traditional approaches to biblical studies, philosophy and theology. The repercussions of the church authorities' condemnations and repression of the so-callled modernist heresy persisted for more than half a century. Then, liberated by Pope John XXIII, himself suspected of being a modernist, the Second Vatican Council created the possibility for many modernist ideas to resurface and initiate a renewal of the church in the modern world. The present work contains the integral correspondence of the leader of this modernist movement, Baron Friedrich von Hugel to Maude D. Petre along with her two extant letters to him. The correspondence offers a unique glimpse into the history of the movement and an example of how its leading protagonist promoted the novel ideas of many of the seminal thinkers of the time among his friends and colleagues. Sadly, the letters also depict the often unchristian nature of the authorities' response and the subsequent suffering inflicted on some of the church's most critical but faithful and enlightened members.
