Book Births Deaths and Marriages on California s Mendocino Coast 1990 1999

Download or read book Births Deaths and Marriages on California s Mendocino Coast 1990 1999 written by Jade C. Angelica and published by . This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, the tenth in a series, chronicles the births, deaths and marriages from 1990 through 1999 in one of California's more remote and beautiful counties. The decade of the Nineties was marked by both positive and negative changes. Nationally, budget problems reduced services to a growing population and created a polarization of politics. Yet, a tremendous growth in technology fostered a "bull" stock market and growth of wealth. In California, Proposition 13 severely impacted all public services, but growing surpluses later in the decade lifted local budget pressures. Problems in the fishing and logging industries on California's North Coast combined with environmental concerns and an electric power crisis were offset by a growing tourist business. Like the previous volumes, the text is divided into three alphabetized sections. All sections include the date of the newspaper in which the notice appears. Birth announcements include the infant's name, weight and date of birth, father's name and residence, and hospital. Death notices provide name of the deceased and sundry information such as: age, residence, occupation, names of family members, place of birth, and place of burial. Marriages are listed alphabetically by groom's surname, and include names of bride, groom, parents, minister, and places of residence. Anniversaries are also included in this section. Brides are listed in the index under their maiden names.

Book From California s Gold Fields to the Mendocino Coast

Download or read book From California s Gold Fields to the Mendocino Coast written by Samuel M. Otterstrom and published by University of Nevada Press. This book was released on 2017-05-01 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: California’s history is rich and diverse, with numerous fascinating stories hidden in its past. Before the discovery of gold in the Sierras, San Francisco (Yerba Buena) and its surroundings comprised a sparsely populated frontier on the edge of the old Spanish realm. After 1848, the area rapidly transformed into a settled urban system as a tremendous influx of prospectors and settlers came to seek their fortune in California. A wave of gold miners, merchants, farmers, politicians, carpenters, and many others from various backgrounds and corners of the world migrated to the area at that time. Interrelated social, geographic, and economic processes led to a very quick metamorphosis from frontier settlement to a firmly established system with ingrained economic patterns. The development of San Francisco’s outlying region from a wilderness into a prosperous village and farming mecca shows how quickly in-migration coupled with economic diversification can establish a stable settlement structure upon the landscape. Otterstrom describes an intricately woven tapestry of interrelated people who were contributing creators of a wide variety of prosperous northern California environs. He uncovers the processes that converted this sleepy post-Mexican outpost into a focal point of nearly hyperactive youthful growth. The narrative follows this crucial story of settlement development until the dawn of the twentieth century, through the interconnected framework of individual and family ingenuity, migration trajectories, and diverse geographical scales. Multiplying individualistic experiences from across far-flung appendages of the Northern California system into larger and larger scales, Otterstrom has achieved a matchless historical and sociological study that will form the basis for any future studies of the area.

Book excerpt: Carl Purdy, who despite his loss of sight in one eye due to a childhood accident saw and understood the flora of California with an unmatched acuity. As a child, Purdy was brought west in a covered wagon train, eventually settling on a ranch in the Ukiah Valley in California. He was fluent in Spanish and several Native American dialects, as well a being somewhat of an expert on Pomo basketry. In 1891 Carl Purdy and Luther Burbank met and became good friends. They shared a great admiration for each other's work. Their deep and genuine friendship would last until Burbank's death in 1926. Burbank, whose home was in Santa Rosa about fifty miles south of Ukiah, often exchanged bulbs and plants with Purdy. In 1915 Purdy was the Superintendent of Horticulture at the Panama-Pacific Exposition, designing many of the gardens and floral displays. For some years he also organized, installed and managed exhibits in county fairs throughout the state. His legacy is a better appreciation of the unique plant life in California.
