Book Birth of a Legend

Download or read book Birth of a Legend written by Capt Arthur H. Wagner Uscg (Ret) and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Competition for Army acquisition funding in the betrween wars depression years was fierce. The opposing camps of Fighter Supremacy versus Strategic Bombing played out at the Air Corps Tactical School (ACTS), at GHQ, before Congress and in the media. Military exercises pitted the Navy and the Air Corps in operations with real cloak and dagger background gambits, each trying to gain the upper hand. When leaders such as Benjamin Foulois, Billy Mitchell, and Frank Andrews eventually were able to foster a bomber competition to replace the Martin B-10, Boeing's four-engined Model 299 was a clear winner; but then it crashed at Dayton, and the Army opted for the Douglas B-18. Somehow, Frank Andrews had enough faith in his convictions and managed to have 13 Y1B-17s produced and sent to the 2nd Bombardment Group at Langley Field, VA. There Robert Olds and his three squadrons enthralled the country with long range goodwill flights, transcontinental speed runs with an obscure 1st Lt Curtis leMay navigating the way, and a thrilling movie "Test Pilot" starring Clark Gable, Myrna Loy, and Spencer Tracy. Fortunately for the trials of WWII, these daring young men of the Army Air Corps put their careers on the line, and made the B-17 one of the iconic weapons of that conflict. This is the untold story of the aircraft development and the men who made it happen.

Book excerpt: "This is a story of music and passion, love and loss, defeat and victory. But his birth was not legendary. Abandoned on the cold steps of a Houndside orphanage, this small unhoundish pup grew up knowing nothing of his mother and father and everything about loneliness and sorrow. His was a hard-scrabble life on the working-class side of town, where motorbike gangs mingled with milkmen and everything was faded, including dreams. Yet it was here that Lonely first heard the blues, gritty barb-wire blues, leaking from clubs and honkytonk bars. And it was this music that became his lifeline and his destiny. Yet it came at a price. Bullied and misunderstood, Lonely was hounded from town and became a refugee in his own country. Rejected, hunted, he knew both prison bars and freedom's kiss. Some called him a troubadour, others a troublemaker"--Inside cover.

Book excerpt: Muhammad Ali is an ambassador to the world, consistently being acclaimed everywhere as Sportsman of the Century. What few people realise, all these years later, is that the legend first took shape in those early years of 1961-1964 in Miami, where he trained with the celebrated Angelo Dundee. It was here that the young Cassius Clay honed his boxing as well as his self-promotional skills, transforming himself into the boxer who spun hilarious doggerel about his opponents and himself, top become both champion and legend. This book is a beautiful and faithful record of that transformation. With over 80 stunning photographs, taken during three extended sessions in the early 1960s, this book captures the young Cassius Clay in tender, almost intimate settings - that would never be duplicated once the spotlights focused on the young boxer - to reveal a personality of extraordinary confidence and charisma.
