Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birds of Indiana: With Illustrations of Many of the Species It has been my purpose not to include within this list any species which has not been taken in the State and not to note any species as having bred unless I am satisfied upon good authority that it has done so. I have added a supplemental list of species, which, from their having been taken near our limits, may, with more or less probability, be expected to be found within the State. I have not followed the plan of the publication of Dr. Brayton, of which this is the successor and from which many notes have been taken, but have preferred to adopt the form herein chosen, thinking it would be acceptable, because different from anything which has been published concerning the birds of the State. The difficulty has been to condense the mass of notes at hand into the limited space accorded by the Society. It is very much desired, and I trust that we shall have, in the immediate future, a report of proper size, concerning the Birds of Indiana and their economic relations. Book Birds of the New York City Region Classic Reprint

Download or read book Birds of the New York City Region Classic Reprint written by Ludlow Griscom and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds of the New York City Region Seventeen years have passed since the appearance of Dr. Chapman's pamphlet on "The Birds of the Vicinity of New York City." This publication briefly summarized the information about our local birds available at that time, and was a veritable mine of inspiration and assistance to the modern generation of field ornithologists and amateur bird students, who were then just beginning work. It is difficult to conceive the change that has taken place in these seventeen years. For one person interested in birds then there are now hundreds, who cover almost every section of the area at every season of the year. When Dr. Chapman wrote, not only were many parts of his territory without a resident student, but many sections had never even been visited by anyone interested in birds, or had remained unvisited for many years. Twenty-five years ago an active field man went out collecting a few dozen times a year, or made two or three trips lasting a week or so apiece. Nowadays an active student will often be afield a hundred times in one year. The result is an enormous mass of data and notes of all kinds, which, when digested and arranged, greatly extend the knowledge of our birds, and modify many old conceptions of their status and distribution. The Linnaean Society of New York, throughout this period, has been the main center and nucleus for this growth of ornithological interest. At its meeting of October 14, 1919, Dr. Chapman moved that a committee be appointed to prepare as complete and detailed a Local Avifauna as present knowledge permitted. This committee, appointed somewhat later, consisted of Mr. J. T. Nichols as chairman, Dr. E. R. P. Janvrin, and the writer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birds of Springfield and Vicinity With all the reliable text books on New England birds, a local list may seem to many uncalled for, but we sometimes find bird life different in short distances. For instance, less than fifty miles to the south and west of Springfield, there is a de cided change in Summer residents, in the latter direction undoubtedly accounted for by reason of variation in altitude, but in the former the reason is hot'so apparent, at least why the difference should be so marked in so short a distance and with practically the same Hora, temperature, and altitude. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wild Birds of New York This little book is not expected to give everyone a complete history of the birds of this state. To do so would require an immense volume. But it is designed to bring to the attention of the reader the most common, the most interesting and the most valuable birds and to create an interest which it is hoped will be the means of starting many on a more extended study of our most interesting fauna. In the last few pages is a quite complete list of New York birds and concise data in regard to their occurrence. As might be expected considering the size and location of the state, a very great many species occur or have been taken here. The sandy beaches and mud flats of Long Island furnish an ideal retreat or resting place for all sorts of water fowl and shore birds. The Carolinian Area of the Austral Zone extends to Long Island and the Lower Hudson Valley; hence a great many southern species occur, species that otherwise would be very unusual in this latitude, such as Kentucky, Hooded and Worm-eating Warblers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birds of the Chicago Area The fine city parks of Chicago are the most favorable localities in which the birds may be studied with afield glass. The wooded island in Jackson Park is an excellent place for the study of the water loving passeres, such as the Prothonotary Warbler, Water Thrushes and Swamp Sparrows. Lincoln Park (see plate II) one and one-half miles long, bordering on Lake Michigan, with its lagoons and lakes, numerous wooded knolls and hills, is a wonderfully attractive locality for the study of birds. On Septem ber 18, 1894, in one small patch of bushes near the greenhouse, I found twelve Specimens of the Connecticut Warbler. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annotated List of Birds of Wellesley and Vicinity: Comprising the Land-Birds and Most of the Inland Water-Fowl of Eastern Massachusetts The following list is designed especially for the use of students in Wellesley College, and others interested in the bird-life of Wellesley and surrounding towns, its chief purpose being to give an approximately correct idea of the bird-life of the district, and serve as a convenient pocket guide to observations. Its field of usefulness, however, especially with reference to the land-birds, is not confined to the area mentioned, but comprises the greater part of Eastern Massachusetts. The list is based upon personal observations, the readily accessible published records of occurrence of the rarer species, and notes furnished by a number of observers, collectors, and taxidermists having a practical acquaintance with the birds of the district. The works treating of New England birds have also been used, when necessary. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Birds of Eastern North America Classic Reprint

Download or read book Birds of Eastern North America Classic Reprint written by Chester A. Reed and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds of Eastern North America This volume is in reality but an extension of, an enlargement upon and a combining of the "show me" properties of "Bird Guide - Land Birds" and "Bird Guide - Water Birds." The kind reception and enormous sale of these smaller books have fully justified my belief that a good, accurate illustration is worth pages of text for conveying an idea of the appearance, of a bird or for identifying one seen in the field. My schooling in this line was gained in the time when an occasional inaccurate woodcut served only to relieve the monotony of the solid pages of text. In those days the birds were "collected" and, with the specimen in hand, it required only time to discover what it was, from the pages of the old reliable "Coues' Key." Birds were more plentiful then and bird students comparatively few. Obviously such methods are impossible now when the birds are fewer and students numbered by the hundreds of thousands. A good pair of bird glasses and a good book will enable the bird student now to see and identify hundreds of species, and that without harming the creatures in the least. In fact, several enthusiasts have written me that they became so familiar with the. birds by means of pictures that upon visiting new localities and seeing new birds they were able to correctly name nearly all at first sight without referring to a book. Bird study is not a fad. It is a recreation and a most useful one. Its importance is shown by the fact that it is one of the requirements of teachers in nearly all states.
