This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Injurious Insects and Useful Birds, Successful Control of Farm Pests This book has been written in the hope of supplying the needs of high school where Agriculture is taught, and of Agricultural Colleges which demand a good text-book that is not too technical, and where the work embraces a large field in which there is a call for practical information and suggestions. It is intended also to supply farmers, orchardists, vegetable growers, owners of gardens, and housekeepers with a reference book for guidance in a campaign against injurious insects and four-footed pests of the farm, and to assist them in obtaining information about some of our more common birds in their relation to agriculture. The widespread and growing interest in this latter group of animals is not to be disregarded. The suggestions contained herein are largely the results of twenty-one years of work in Economic Entomology on the part of the author. Yet in so large a field one must of necessity have recourse to much experience not his own, and the author has not hesitated to obtain desired information from many reliable publications; such as bulletins and circulars from the United States Department of Agriculture, bulletins from the Geneva and the Cornell stations, and from all sections of the country. Many illustrations are from Minnesota State publications. I have also been favored by the kindness of others who have loaned their cuts. Courtesies of this kind, which are hereby gratefully acknowledged, have been extended by the Bureau of Entomology, United States Department of Agriculture; P. J. Parrott, of the New York (Geneva) station; Dr. G. W. Herrick, of the Cornell station; the California station; Professor G. H. Dean, of Kansas; C.P. Gillette, of Colorado; R. A. Cooley, of Montana; W. C. O'Kane, of New Hampshire; H. A. Morgan, of Tennessee; W. E. Britton, of Connecticut; and the Ohio station. For figures 324 and 326 the author is indebted to the Country Gentleman. Some illustrations of spraying apparatus were obtained from the Barnes Company and the Goulds Manufacturing Company. Book The Practical Value of Birds Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Practical Value of Birds Classic Reprint written by Junius Henderson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-14 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Practical Value of Birds Because of the fact that some species of insects and other pests which are normally kept within reasonable bounds, may, during especially favorable seasons or cycles of seasons increase so rapidly as to become very harmful, those birds which take a mixed diet are particularly valuable. Thus a bird species which ordinarily is largely vegetarian lives through seasons of scarcity of insects, and then is ready to turn its attention to an insect diet whenever the insects become overabundant; whereas, if the birds were all exclusively insectivorous, comparatively few would survive seasons unfavorable to ia sects and thus be on hand to aid in the warfare against these pests when seasons favorable to insect life occur. A species which is harmless, or even beneficial, in its natural habitat, may become injurious when transported to a new environment, where the natural checks upon its increase are wanting, or the lack of its natural food, or the presence of a food which is more enjoyable, may cause a marked change in its food habits. It is said that the Skylark, green linnet and black thrush are considered beneficial in Europe, where they are native, but in New Zea land, into which country they have been introduced, they have developed traits which render them far from desirable additions to the fauna of that It will be interesting to watch the effect of the introduction of the Little Gray Owl into New Zealand for the purpose of fighting the English sparrow Such importations are now, as a result of disastrous experience, prohibited by law in some countries, including the United States. The introduction of a species may disturb the balance as much as the extermination of one. European rats, accidentally introduced into Jamaica, became a great nuisance. The Indian mongoose was imported to destroy the rats. It turned its attention to game birds, poultry, young pigs and lambs, and became a great pest, also destroying many birds, snakes and lizards, which feed largely upon insects. This was followed by an increase of insect pests. Disaster also followed the introduction Of the mongoose into Hawaii, and its importation into the United States was barely prevented. Rabbits. Book Some Common Birds Useful to the Farmer

Download or read book Some Common Birds Useful to the Farmer written by Foster Ellenborough Lascelles Beal and published by . This book was released on 1918 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "From a purely practical point of view the most important of the relations of native birds to man are the economic. The esthetic value of birds is great -- greater, indeed, than that of any other group of animals; and that this is a real and especially a treasured value is not to be denied. But it is in their relation to insect and other enemies of crops that birds are most directly associated with the welfare of mankind, and their value in this particular should be made as widely known as possible. This bulletin is one of a series designed to assist in doing this. Not all birds are beneficial and all facts tending to show in which class each species belongs will be set forth. the useful kinds far outnumber the injurious, however, and so great is their value as insect destroyers in the United States that to them may be given the credit of being on e of the greatest controlling factors in limiting the development of insect pests and in preventing many disastrous outbreaks. In the following pages are discussed the habitat, food habits, a nd relation to agriculture of more than 50 species of birds common to farming sections."--Page 2
