Book Stories of Bird Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book Stories of Bird Life Classic Reprint written by T. Gilbert Pearson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Bird Life MY purpose in writing these stories and sketches of birds has been that I might make others acquainted with the ways of some of the wild birds which have been of so much interest to me. Should they serve to give the reader a little more intimate ao quaintance with our feathered neighbors of the field and woodland, my main object will have been accomplished. These stories are not fanciful, but are true to bird life. The Arredondo Sparrow Hawk, ruffle-breast and Socrates were partien lar birds well known to others as to me. In the case of the Bob white family, and Bib-neck, the Plover, I have combined into the lives of a few birds incidents I have known to occur to many. The accounts of Visits to birds' nests, bird colonies and the like are given as they occurred. In the Appendixes some suggestions are offered to the student and the teacher. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bits of Bird Life: Selections From the Youth's Companion Near my study there used to stand several Old apple-trees that bore fair crops of apples, but better crops Of birds. Every year these Old trees were the scenes Of bird incidents and bird histories that were a source Of much interest and amusement. Young trees may be the best for apples, but Old trees are sure to bear the most birds. If they are very decrepit, and full of dead and hollow branches, they will bear birds in Winter as well as summer. The downy woodpecker wants no better place than the brittle, dozy trunk Of an apple-tree in which to excavate his winter home. My Old apple-trees are all down but one, and this one is probably an octogenarian, and I am afraid cannot stand it another winter. Its body is a mere shell not much over one inch thick, the heart and main interior structure having turned to black mold long ago. An Old tree, unlike an Old person, as long as it lives at all, always has a young streak, or rather ring, in it. It wears a girdle Of perpetual youth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bird-Life To compress the "Story of Bird-Life" within the limits of the present little work has been no easy task. The object aimed at has been to present the main features of bird-life in a general way. Hence it is hoped this volume may prove of interest to bird-lovers the world over, not because it contains information about the birds of any particular neighbourhood or country; but rather, because it serves as a guide to what should be looked for, and recorded, of the life-history of birds wherever they may be met with. Even dwellers in the sordid city have some material upon which they may exercise their powers of observation. Since there are no less than 13,000 known species of birds, it would have been courting failure, and wearisome in the extreme, to deal with individuals in detail! The present work then is a skeleton picture, which each can fill up as he may for himself. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annals of Bird Life: A Year-Book of British Ornithology I have so arranged the present volume that the student may readily acquaint himself with what is going on among the birds during every month of the year. I make no pretensions to completeness; the subject is too vast and varied to be exhausted in a single volume. In many cases the dates given can of necessity only be approximate ones - an allowance of a few days either way must often be made for differ ences of latitude, state of the weather, and other local in uences. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds: A Monthly Serial Designed to Promote Knowledge of Bird-Life; January, 1897 We quote from the December number of the Ladies' Home Journal: An excellent su gestion was recently made by the Department of Agriculture at Washington that the public schools of the country shall have a new holiday, to be known as Bird Day. Three cities have already adopted the suggestion, and it is likely that others will quickly follow. Of course, Bird Day will differ from its successful predecessor, Arbor Day. We can plant trees but not birds. It is suggested that Bird Day take the form of bird exhibitions, of bird exer cises, of bird studies - any form of entertainment, in fact, which will bring children closer to their little brethren of the air, and in more intelligent sympathy with their life and ways. There is a wonderful story in bird life, and but few of our children know it. Few of our elders do, for that matter. A whole day of a year can well and profitably be given over to the birds. Than such study, nothing can be more interesting. The cultivation of an intimate acquaintanceship with our feathered friends is a source of genuine pleasure We are under greater obligations to the birds than we dream of. Without them the world would be more barren than we imagine. Consequently, we have some duties which we owe them. What these duties are only a few of us know or have ever taken the trouble to find out. Our children should not be allowed to grow to maturity without this knowledge. The more they know of the birds the better men and women they will be. We can hardly encourage such studies too much. Of all animated nature, birds are the most beautiful in coloring, most graceful in form and action, swiftest in motion and most perfect emblems of freedom. They are withal, very intelligent and have many remarkable traits, so that their habits and characteristics make a delightful study for all lovers of nature. In view of the facts, we feel that we are doing a useful work for the young, and one that will be appreciated by progressive parents, in placing within the easy possession of children in the homes these beautiful photographs of birds. Download or read book Bird Life Glimpses Classic Reprint written by Edmund Selous and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bird Life Glimpses IN the autumn of 1899 I came to live at Icklingham in Suffolk, and remained there, with occasional in tervals of absence, for the next three years. During the greater part of that period I kept a day-to - day journal of field Observation and reflection, and the following pages represent, for the most part, a portion of this. They are the work of one who professes nothing except to have used his eyes and ears to the best of his ability, and to give only, both in regard to fact and theory, the result of this method - com bined, of course, in the latter case, with such illustra tions and fortifications as his reading may have allowed him to make use of, and Without taking into account some passing reference or allusion. That my notes relate almost entirely to birds, is not because I am less interested in other animals, but because, with the exception of rabbits, there are, practically, no wild quadrupeds in England. I am quite aware that a list can be made out, but let any one sit for a morning or afternoon in a wood, field.
