Book The Biology of Human Starvation

Download or read book The Biology of Human Starvation written by Ancel Keys and published by . This book was released on 1950 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Biology of Human Starvation was first published in 1950. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. With great areas of the world battling the persistent and basic problem of hunger, this work constitutes a major contribution to needed scientific knowledge. The publication is a definitive treatise on the morphology, biochemistry, physcology, psychology, and medical aspects of calorie undernutrition, cachexia, starvation, and rehabilitation in man. Presented critically and systematically are the fact and theory from the world literature, including the evidence from World War II and the finding of the Minnesota Starvation Experiment (1944*1946). Pertinent experiments and field and clinical observations to 1949 are covered. The extensive original research involved was conducted at the University of Minnesota Laboratory of Physiological Hygiene, which Dr. Keys heads. The authors, all of the laboratory staff, were assisted in preparation of the work by Ernst Simonson, Samuel Wells and Angie Sturgeon Skinner.

Book Biology of Starvation in Humans and Other Organisms

Download or read book Biology of Starvation in Humans and Other Organisms written by Todd C. Merkin and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the biology of starvation in humans and other organisms. Topics discussed herein include the physiological landscape of the stationary phase and the molecular events that allow the Mycobacterium smegmatis species to survive prolonged periods of starvation; the biochemical aspects of starvation in yeasts; the epidemiology of hunger in the world and the hunger-obesity paradox; starvation of bacteria for amino acids as an example of prokaryotic response to nutritional deprivation; intra-uterine growth retardation due to maternal under-nutrition; and the physiological changes during starvation in fish.

Book Comparative Physiology of Fasting Starvation and Food Limitation

Download or read book Comparative Physiology of Fasting Starvation and Food Limitation written by Marshall D. McCue and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-05-17 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All animals face the possibility of food limitation and ultimately starvation-induced mortality. This book summarizes state of the art of starvation biology from the ecological causes of food limitation to the physiological and evolutionary consequences of prolonged fasting. It is written for an audience with an understanding of general principles in animal physiology, yet offers a level of analysis and interpretation that will engage seasoned scientists. Each chapter is written by active researchers in the field of comparative physiology and draws on the primary literature of starvation both in nature and the laboratory. The chapters are organized among broad taxonomic categories, such as protists, arthropods, fishes, reptiles, birds, and flying, aquatic, and terrestrial mammals including humans; particularly well-studied animal models, e.g. endotherms are further organized by experimental approaches, such as analyses of blood metabolites, stable isotopes, thermobiology, and modeling of body composition.

Book The Biology of Human Survival

Download or read book The Biology of Human Survival written by Claude A. Piantadosi and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2003-09-11 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The range of environments in which people can survive is extensive, yet most of the natural world cannot support human life. The Biology of Human Survival identifies the key determinants of life or death in extreme environments from a physiologist's perspective, integrating modern concepts of stress, tolerance, and adaptation into explanations of life under Nature's most austere conditions. The book examines how individuals survive when faced with extremes of immersion, heat, cold or altitude, emphasizing the body's recognition of stress and the brain's role in optimizing physiological function in order to provide time to escape or to adapt. In illustrating how human biology adapts to extremes, the book also explains how we learn to cope by blending behavior and biology, first by trial and error, then by rigorous scientific observation, and finally by technological innovation. The book describes life-support technology and how it enables humans to enter once unendurable realm, from the depths of the ocean to the upper reaches of the atmosphere and beyond. Finally, it explores the role that advanced technology might play in special environments of the future, such as long journeys into space.
