Book excerpt: Concepts of Biology is designed for the single-semester introduction to biology course for non-science majors, which for many students is their only college-level science course. As such, this course represents an important opportunity for students to develop the necessary knowledge, tools, and skills to make informed decisions as they continue with their lives. Rather than being mired down with facts and vocabulary, the typical non-science major student needs information presented in a way that is easy to read and understand. Even more importantly, the content should be meaningful. Students do much better when they understand why biology is relevant to their everyday lives. For these reasons, Concepts of Biology is grounded on an evolutionary basis and includes exciting features that highlight careers in the biological sciences and everyday applications of the concepts at hand.We also strive to show the interconnectedness of topics within this extremely broad discipline. In order to meet the needs of today's instructors and students, we maintain the overall organization and coverage found in most syllabi for this course. A strength of Concepts of Biology is that instructors can customize the book, adapting it to the approach that works best in their classroom. Concepts of Biology also includes an innovative art program that incorporates critical thinking and clicker questions to help students understand--and apply--key concepts.

Book Membranes and Transport

Download or read book Membranes and Transport written by Anthony N. Martonosi and published by Springer. This book was released on 1982-08-31 with total page 718 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a collection of short reviews on membranes and transport. It portrays the field as a mosaic of bright little pieces, which are interesting in themselves but gain full signif icance when viewed as a whole. Traditional boundaries are set aside and biochemists, biophysicists, physiologists, and cell biologists enter into a natural discourse. The principal motivation of this work was to ease the problems of communication that arose from the explosive growth and interdisciplinary character of membrane research. In these volumes we hope to provide a readily available comprehensive source of critical information covering many of the exciting, recent developments on the structure, biosyn thesis, and function of biological membranes in microorganisms, animal cells, and plants. The 182 reviews contributed by leading authorities should enable experts to check up on recent developments in neighboring areas of research, allow teachers to organize material for membrane and transport courses, and give advanced students the opportunity to gain a broad view of the topic. Special attention was given to developments that are expected to open new areas of investigation. The result is a kaleidoscope of facts, viewpoints, theories, and techniques, which radiates the excitement of this important field. Publication of these status reports every few years should enable us to follow progress in an interesting and easygoing format. I am grateful to the authors, to Plenum Publishing Corporation, and to several of my colleagues for their thoughtful suggestions and enthusiastic cooperation, which made this work possible.

Book Scientific Teaching

  • Pages : 208 pages

Download or read book Scientific Teaching written by Jo Handelsman and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2007 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seasoned classroom veterans, pre-tenured faculty, and neophyte teaching assistants alike will find this book invaluable. HHMI Professor Jo Handelsman and her colleagues at the Wisconsin Program for Scientific Teaching (WPST) have distilled key findings from education, learning, and cognitive psychology and translated them into six chapters of digestible research points and practical classroom examples. The recommendations have been tried and tested in the National Academies Summer Institute on Undergraduate Education in Biology and through the WPST. Scientific Teaching is not a prescription for better teaching. Rather, it encourages the reader to approach teaching in a way that captures the spirit and rigor of scientific research and to contribute to transforming how students learn science.

Book Genetics Content in Introductory Biology Courses for Non science Majors

Download or read book Genetics Content in Introductory Biology Courses for Non science Majors written by Adam M. Hott and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Human Genetics Education Sub-committee under the Information and Education committee of the American Society of Human Genetics has developed a recommendation of 6 main concepts and 43 sub-concepts it felt should be taught in introductory biology courses for non-science majors. An Internet survey instrument was then designed for course instructors to determine the degree to which these concepts and sub-concepts were being taught. The total hours spent on each concept were determined, as were the relative importance and emphasis an instructor attached to each sub-concept (1-5 scale with 5 highest). A total of 357 responses from both 2-year and 4-year institutions was obtained. Of the 93.3 hours the average course offered to students, 15.6% on average was dedicated to genetics including mitosis and meiosis. Of the six main concepts, the highest average time spent was on Transmission of the Genetic Material (3.0 hrs), with 1.9 hours committed to Genetics and Society (fifth lowest). In all sub-concepts except one, a statistically significant higher 3importance4 was reported compared to the 3emphasis4 individuals were able to give that sub-concept in the course. This disparity between importance and emphasis represents a significant challenge for improving HGE in introductory biology courses for non-science majors given that it is the only formal exposure to genetics most students will have at the college level.

Book Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation

Download or read book Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-07-29 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order for the United States to maintain the global leadership and competitiveness in science and technology that are critical to achieving national goals, we must invest in research, encourage innovation, and grow a strong and talented science and technology workforce. Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation explores the role of diversity in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) workforce and its value in keeping America innovative and competitive. According to the book, the U.S. labor market is projected to grow faster in science and engineering than in any other sector in the coming years, making minority participation in STEM education at all levels a national priority. Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation analyzes the rate of change and the challenges the nation currently faces in developing a strong and diverse workforce. Although minorities are the fastest growing segment of the population, they are underrepresented in the fields of science and engineering. Historically, there has been a strong connection between increasing educational attainment in the United States and the growth in and global leadership of the economy. Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation suggests that the federal government, industry, and post-secondary institutions work collaboratively with K-12 schools and school systems to increase minority access to and demand for post-secondary STEM education and technical training. The book also identifies best practices and offers a comprehensive road map for increasing involvement of underrepresented minorities and improving the quality of their education. It offers recommendations that focus on academic and social support, institutional roles, teacher preparation, affordability and program development.

Book Science for Non specialists

  • Author : National Research Council (U.S.). Committee on the Federal Role in College Science Education of Non-specialists
  • Publisher : National Academies
  • Release : 1982
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 164 pages

Download or read book Science for Non specialists written by National Research Council (U.S.). Committee on the Federal Role in College Science Education of Non-specialists and published by National Academies. This book was released on 1982 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is derived from a study of the Federal Role in College Science Education of Non-Specialists and concerns a vital area of education in U.S. colleges which has not received the emphasis it deserves. Attention has been paid to making certain that majors in science or engineering have breadth and depth in the humanities and social sciences but an equal effort has not been given to ensuring that college students planning careers in law, business, journalism, etc. have course work in science. The issues involved in preparing opinion leaders to be knowledgeable in science and technology need to be addressed by both the public and private sectors. The authors of this report, in addressing these issues, believe that it is in the national interest to help non-science majors develop an understanding of science and technology. They also include in their discussion some suggestions for future action. (Author/PEB)
